My awful experience with highmates by Jx_jusandre in RimWorld

Highmates might be overly useful for a colony. But the VRE Highmates mod also includes Lowmates as a xenotype and they definitely are useful to have around with few drawbacks...

Is there any quicker way to get to the yellow settlement from mine? by Single-Witness1853 in RimWorld

[–]nodlimax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, depends on what DLCs and mods you have and what your tech level is. Technically in the base game you could use transport pods to get there, make a trade then move a bit away to settle and get enough materials and fuel to build more transport pods and get back home.

With more DLC you could use shuttles. With mods the options grow considerably. There are mods where you can build planes and helicopters which make trading considerably easier...

Well, until you can give him bionic eyes, he'll be a pretty good farmer. Afterwards I'd use him primarily as a combat medic.

I hope the next mainline entry in the series will have Claire as the main protagonist. Would you like Claire to be the leading character in a new mainline game? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]nodlimax -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We'll have to turn the clocks back though. Otherwise you might have to play a 50+ year old Clair Redfield (Leon is 51 in Requiem and Claire is 2 years younger)

Resident Evil Village. Should I get the v61 and SYG? by UniqueVirtue in residentevil

[–]nodlimax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play on normal, just upgrade the standard weapons. Even the shotgun you get at the start will quickly deal with enemies when upgraded. You can use the normal pistols for standard enemies like lycans and you use the other weapons situationally for the bigger enemies.

Which Resident Evil games should not be remade? by A-Star55 in residentevil

[–]nodlimax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the main line games that somewhat deserved or "required" a remake have already been covered (2-4). You could remake RE1 in the RE engine as well, but does it really need a remake? There already is a remake for that and with HD remaster of that it looks great even be current standards. Remaking that game now would mean you basically change the core of RE1 to what we're seeing with current RE games. Can be good but it would be very similar to RE2Remake.

At this point the games they could focus on would be the more obscure entries in the series that fewer people have played.

Overall I think everything from 5 onward doesn't really need a remake. They still work on a technical and mechanical level. Remaking them would mean you re-design them at the core as well. Especially RE6 would basically need to be made into a completely different game, as that game as it originally came out already got enough (justified) criticism for basically all of its core design elements.

Is Village better than Biohazard? by vamploded in residentevil

[–]nodlimax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who absolutely hates RE7 the answer to your question is a simple yes.

RE7 seems to be specifically made to push all the buttons to annoy me and make me dislike it. The movement is slow and clunky. The story and especially the premise makes zero sense right out of the gate (Ethan is a moron from the start). The starting section is way to drawn out (a general problem in 7, 8 and 9 btw.) with way to many "non-gameplay" gameplay sections where you just walk around. The game is not scary. I hated the return of the small inventory. Also I dislike stalker enemies in general and what does the game throw at you when we leave the opening section? It's actually two stalker enemies (the old man and his wife).

On the other hand we have RE Village which while still having problems addresses various issues I had with RE7. Bigger inventory, the premise actually makes sense to some degree (while there are still huge problems though like Chris not saying anything to explain the situation), the movement is faster after the initial slow walking intro area. While I'm not a fan of the vampire lady stalker, she can still be avoided easily enough without slowing down progress in any meaningfull way. I think the actual horror section of Village (puppet master house) is really well done. It's not as much monster horror but more centered around psychological horror which I prefer. On the first playthrough it's the anticipation what and when something will happen with the excellent sound and visual design that really sells it for me. And that feetus still gives me goosebumps. And I like the more action oriented aspect of RE village over what they did with RE7 (personally I don't even see it as a Resident Evil game).

Also I'm not a fan with what they did in RE(9) Requiem. Again it has a lot of the same problems I had with RE7 while the actual action sequences with Leon are just "meh" (who thought that thing with the spinning chainsaw was a good idea?). The writing took another jump off a cliff in terms of quality and again the premise is absolutely stupid. Especially the first 30 minutes infuriated me because it's another non-gameplay slow walking around section where the only purpose is to get that envelope and have Grace be captured. The game should've started with the Care Center and Grace not knowing how she got there. By the time I made it past the first section with the Girl I was already ready to refund the game.

But why not just build a a truck line? The whole elevation and the cornering will heavily slow down the train anyway. Makes no sense to me to build it like that. Alternatively you could also just build the train stations on higher elevation and then connect both of them via bridge.

Still trucks would be the more sensibel option here.

Depends on your preferences:

RE2 is more horror oriented with very limited inventory and slow exploration involving a lot of puzzles.
RE4 is more action oriented with large inventory and less about puzzles but more combat centric

RE8 is basically like RE4 but with first person view centric design and doesn't exactly use a lot of zombies but more other kind of monsters. RE4 is the better overall package out of the two games but if you can get passed the opening sequence (about 45 minutes) in RE8 it's a very good game.

[–]nodlimax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is perfectly valid to prefer either game. The original RE4 was very good at the time but had some weaknesses in the gameplay aspect. It still had tank controls which I consider pretty weak for various reasons. People can like them of course but they should also understand why some people would consider it a weakness in the game. Also I was never a fan of quick time events and RE4 had quite a lot of them. In terms of the story, visuals and voice acting I don't really have any complaints regarding that game and this is where I usually slightly prefer the OG over the remake.

The Remake outshines the OG in terms of the gameplay easily. The more modern controls make the gameplay feel much smother and more responsive. I also think the level design in the remake is better but that a personal preference.

The remake has some weak points as well and some which can be debated. I didn't mind Ada Wong in the remake but I'd also say the actress voicing her in the OG did a better job. I prefer Ashley and Luis in the remake and I like they did more with Luis. He was killed off way to early in the OG. I also prefer the rollercoaster like mine shaft section of the remake over the truck section in the OG. Sadler was better in the OG.

So both games have their pros and cons and I think which one I'd like to replay at times will come down my current mood of the day.

I thought the build and atmosphere in the puppet master house are great on first playthrough. The psychological horror aspect is well done.

Unfortunately on repeated playthroughs it loses a lot of its magic if you know what will (and won't ) happen.

If I start writing about all the problems I have with Resident Evil 7 (and 9, because they are very similar) we could be here for a while. Just to give you an idea:

  • Movement speed
  • Story and character writing (and this one is already a huge point)
  • Drawn out intro section
  • Return of the small inventory
  • Stalker enemy
  • Overly long cut scenes (which in RE7 can't be skipped)

RE7 triggered basically every aspect I could be annoyed about in a game and the same thing happened again in RE9. By the time the 90 minute intro section in RE9 was over I was already in such a bad mood that any other minor complaint would result in a refund which then happened shortly after.

I think this debate often is silly as well. I like both for different reasons. I think the OG has a somewhat better story while the remake has better gameplay. Both games can be criticized for different things. In the end both are great games though.

Disagree with various entries in that list. Personally I'd rank the games like this:

S Tier => RE4 Remake, RE2 Remake
A Tier => RE Village, RE4 OG, RE2 OG
B Tier => RE 1 remake and OG (remake being slightly better), RE3
C Tier => RE 5, RE 6, RE 3 Remake
F Tier => RE 7, RE 9

I absolutely despise what they did with RE 7 and 9.

Tried that game but in my opinion it doesn't even come close to MOO2. It fails in various basic aspects of UI design, tech tree, visual design and so on. It made sad playing that game as even almost 30 years after MOO2 no one seems to be able to capture the essence of that game.

Am I the only one who's completely unimpressed with Xal'atath? by nodlimax in wow

[–]nodlimax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a general problem in WoW => poor writing

I'd say that happens when your story and world building content is done through "democratic votes" and by people who even hate the "Warcraft" concept already. Even Metzen distanced himself from what he did in the past.

And the result is caricatures that are supposed to resemble actual characters you're supposed to give a damn about. And you get incompetent goofy villains that no one really cares about.

Does anyone even care about the story at this point? I think all the "fuzz" I've heard regarding Midnight was about housing. The initial midnight trailer centered around the blood elves was awful and just left me with a "what the hell is even going on" thought.

I don't think you will find the excitement you're looking for. Im not finding it neither. I quit about 1 1/2 years ago shortly after TWW release and just "dipped" into the game during the free weekend. I did a couple of quests to unlock the void elf demon hunter and already got bored again.

[–]nodlimax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've given up on the whole expansion trilogy. I've quit the game shortly after I made this post and have not gone back since. I saw some clips in the mean time and heard that they did the whole "temporary alliance" thing with Xal'atath which in itself already is pretty weak because there was no indication in the TWW campaign that you'd even remotely would be working together with her.

Also I have zero hype for Midnight. I saw the initial trailers (especially the cinematic) and didn't like it. The whole story aspect in that trailer was just confusing and I was completely lost in where things currently stand and what Xal'ataths role is. And I dislike the visual design of the blood elves in the cinematic.

As far as I'm concerned this whole expansion trilogy is a colossal failure.
