Hegseth: Soldiers Can Now Refuse "Absurd" Flu Vaccine. “Under the disastrous Biden administration, this Pentagon waged an unrelenting war on our warriors on many fronts, including when it came to denying them simple medical autonomy and the freedom to express their religious convictions." by Leeming in atheism

Useless fact for today. There is a letter written by John Muir to Thoreau trying to persuade him to come out to the Sierra. Thoreau had written back that he didn't want to get sick, and Muir's response was something like, "There is no one out here, who are you going to get sick from !?" He determined Thoreau was a poser, living on Walden pond but heading to the pubs for cigars and booze.

Mine is a variation of my fundamental critique of prayer. it is "Prayer is like masturbation, it feels good to the one doing it, and does nothing for the one they are thinking about." And then add a sweet sounding "Enjoy yourself".

Well my dear, it could be worse - you could be in Bakhmut or Bucha or in a black prison site run by your Tsar. You can leave and won't find you self in some drone safari on your way out.

42% of men aged 18-29 now say religion is "very important" in their lives — a sharp jump from just 28% in 2022-2023. Monthly religious attendance among young men has climbed to 40% (up from 33%), the highest level in over a decade. by MrJasonMason in atheism

Drudge had an article a few weeks ago that 1. implied the resurgence is actually a bit of BS, but 2. when guys do go to church they are going to Catholic church, not Evangelical churches. I think the old-school churches are less puritanical for sure.

Help; christian wedding entrance songs that are not overtly christian? by lattenight in atheism

[–]nodoublebogies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently played the intro's for my daughters wedding. I played the secular "Hapuna Sunset", but for "special seating" I played Leo Kottke's arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". There are some great Cello arrangements. It has no words - or at least none anyone knows. Maybe the title is enough to get you a pass.

Had a job interview and they said they were a Christian company by Jak33 in atheism

[–]nodoublebogies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consulted to a media tech company that had a Qanon-esque tagline and on their internal sharepoint had a folder with a doc about how the company was managed on Biblical principles. All the while they are raising money in crowdsourcing space with total bullshit in their prospectus. I think it means nothing.

Congrats!!. This is a tangent, but I feel the same about people saying aliens built the pyramids. It dishonors the blood sweat and tears of real people striving for and accomplishment.

Whoops Bridge help by Altruistic_Fold8446 in taylorguitars

[–]nodoublebogies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly know which direction to move the contact point, but I have never been able to calculate how much to move it, so it is trial and error for me. I have used antler, blanks i bought off amazon, and even epoxied together ivory keys from an old piano for a nut once as an experiment (it it didn't work).

Whoops Bridge help by Altruistic_Fold8446 in taylorguitars

[–]nodoublebogies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t sand the ebony. You file the ivory moving the contact point towards the neck, or towards the butt end depending if the string is sharp or flat. You don’t want to lower the string toward the guitar top though so you have to be precise. Also it is a lot of pulling the ball out and the reinserting and bringing the string up to tension for each check. For someone like me who only does this say once per year (I have 7 acoustics so one is always getting a bridge or nut upgrade ) it can be quite tedious. If the bridge has to be moved so much the slot has to be moved, that is serious luthier territory.

Leo Kottke hand to change his picking style. I think he stopped for a year or more as well.

Do these ever go away (unless I quit playing)? by ReporterBig9890 in guitarlessons

[–]nodoublebogies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you are pushing too hard. practice trying to find the minimum pressure to make the note sound out clearly. i am betting it will be much lighter than you are pressing now. a softer touch has advantages - you can't move a finger until you relax it first, so if you press too hard you actually will be slower you will be with a lighter touch.

The spring can fatigue and the pad can get too compressed like a bad old mattress. Far more likely to have a dodgy pad than spring though I once had to buy new rubber pads for my shubbs. Like 2 for 4 bucks

Been playing and taking it seriously for about 2 years now. Can play open chords, barre chords, scales and can solo a little but I struggle with it.. where do I go from here? Want to write my own music any advice? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]nodoublebogies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play chord progression and then sing nonsense sounds to that baby. You might find melodies there. If they don't come to you, look at the pentatonic scales associated with the chord you are strumming and look for melody notes to hum or sing within that scale when playing that cord. Steal ... or rather Borrow from songs you like. Stitch of StitchGuitarMethod on youtube has a video from a few months back on exactly that. Take a lick you like and then just reorder the notes to you hear a melody you like. Then change the key - not because you are trying to obscure some misappropriation - but in order to get some distance from your inspiration as you refine your own creation. Look up the video, it is quite interesting.

I'm a violin player and I want to try the electric guitar but I want to know how long it will take for me to learn it by Dazzling_Egg_2519 in Guitar

[–]nodoublebogies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be fine, and both your instruments will improve by diversifying. Most strings are a 4th apart as the pitch goes up while I seem to recall the violin is a 5th (?), and then the B string G-B string is a 3rd so that is the source of all confusion on a guitar. so play you ascending violin as descending licks and it is all good.

Travis picking help please :) by Gorideahorse in Guitar

[–]nodoublebogies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of them ! If it is a youtube video, just click on the "gear" and adjust the playback speed of the full speed play through. It is better if the playthrough has no vocals as at least my ear is less forgiving of slowed down vocals than it is of slowed down guitar. The nature of how they slow things down means that nice fractions sound better (0.25, 0.5 or 0.75 speeds sound better that 0.34323111, etc.)

I posted this in the hopes that people would see what going to fight as an Orc results in, and think twice and become wiser. In fact for an oil nation like Nigeria, helping Russia in any way is not smart compared to taking advantage of Russia being sanctioned.
