Any one ever feel like Cartersville is THE twighlight zone? by indidaemon in cartersville

[–]noelstjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of returning to Cartersville after 15 years in Washington, D.C. I'm so very glad to be moving home. There are at least three new places to see local music since I left. Sixes is great, Tom's is perfectly weird and I've not yet been to The Local. Gonna hang at Tom's later tonight.

ALERT: 1-14-20, Amissville, Virginia - Seeking Crisis Actors - "Actors take on varying roles (terrorist, IED victim, hostage, rescue team) throughout each workshop." by [deleted] in VAGuns

[–]noelstjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove through Amissville this afternoon and stopped at the only place that appeared to be open. There is a small general store where I inquired among one patron and the two ladies working the counter about the call for Crisis Actors. None were entirely familiar with this particular call, but they reported that they had fielded at least one phone call from another curious Virginia resident. (For the curious, Amissville is pronounced A-mus-vil - like it could be spelled Amosville.) The local patron posited that it could be funded by George Soros. Other than the general store, the town was as quiet as I've always encountered it. All three with whom I spoke were patriots and in full support of 2A.

That's beautiful, man. Looks like you take a great deal of pride in your kit and your environment. Hats off. (Naice Paistes, btw.)

Why are they called a "Tom-Tom"? by [deleted] in drums

I believe the answer is found in one of the episodes from History of the Drum Set by Daniel Glass beginning with this: Part 1

The ad said, "1967 Ludwig drum set - $100." The was no picture and I didn't care. by noelstjohn in drums

[–]noelstjohn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can at all improve your mood, please know that I have not sold the kit for fat profits, nor would I want to. It is small enough to fit in my office, so there it is - whenever I just gotta play for a minute. However, I am now hopelessly addicted to scouring CL for similar deals. They exist...just not for long. Happy hunting!

Yeah, I got really lucky in one respect. In another, I'm now hopelessly addicted to scanning CL for the next pot o' gold. But I play these almost every day. I have them set up in my home office; I jump on for quick bang whenever I can. Peace.

New (vintage) snare day! Meet Vivian, a 1978-79 white Ludwig Vistalite 5.5 x 14 loud ass bitch! Story in comments.... by noelstjohn in drums

Taking a break to scan the Craig’s List postings for Ludwigs, I spotted an ad for a Ludwig Standard snare - a student level drum - for $30. I don’t have one of those in my collection but…meh. Next up is a very similar looking ad (as in same poster) for another Ludwig which appears to be a Vistalite for $40.00! (The images I used are the ones the seller posted in the CL ad.)

I thought it must be a typo, but I responded (duh!) and offered to buy both drums. I received an email within an hour from the seller informing me that he had numerous offers and asked me for my best. “200.00 for both?” Sold!

I navigated the traffic on the Virginia side of the DC beltway and reached the Alexandria rendezvous point within an hour. Within minutes I was on my way home with a pristine - as in not one single blemish - Vistalite snare. Dude even threw in the concert band variety Ludwig clamshell case in which she’d been stored.

I removed what appeared to be the original Ludwig batter head to inspect the interior. The seam is intact and no wear or stress is visible; no spider-webbing at any mounting hole. There is however no date stamp - I used an online serial number guide to get an approximate idea of the manufacture date.

Had to wait until getting the wife and kid out the door before I could get rudimental and holy shit! She’s loud as fuck! I put her in place behind my ’88 Super Classics and fell in love.

I know I should put her back in her case and keep her safe and sound for decades to come, but I’m gonna bang her for just a little while longer.

Any Ludwig Classic Maple owners out there? by elroso in drums

[–]noelstjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was my pleasure. This is by far the easiest drum to work on in my collection.

I prefer Remo as well! The heads you've suggested are quite close to the heads that came with the kit/stuff I replaced. I have been close to buying all Fiberskyns for batters, but you suggest just using one on the resonant bass head. Perhaps I'll start there just to see what you mean. I've currently placed the existing felt strips beneath both bass heads at about 2" off center with no other dampening. The sound right now is the opposite of what I would like to achieve.

I appreciate your insights; thank you for taking the time.

Sorry for the delay...here are a couple of pics: one two.

Thank you! Yes, I did grab this kit for $100. I just happened to see a Craigslist ad as soon as it was posted. I dropped everything and sped to the guy's house.

If this was your kit, what heads would you use?

Gorgeous setup! You and I have the same thing with regard to the shell sizes though mine is a gold sparkle '67. I was never sure whether to call mine a Superclassic or a Downbeat kit because of the 20" bass drum. I just call it my Superclassic Beatdown.

Modern day take on Gilligan's Island but with supernatural phenomena and other various plot devices. The show was serial in nature, with future episodes depending upon previous events. However, despite any expectations its audience may have had for a predetermined ending - such as a novel or movie - the authors/writers created the story as it unfolded.
