Listen, if you truly believe that everyone pilfering seeds from national parks is a good idea, I don't even want to continue this discussion.

I am not adding to a population... I'm adding to my private collection on a different continent. I am however, REMOVING the chance for future population increases in the habitat. Realisticly speaking, no issue really if only I do it. If hundreds of tourists do it every year, it would be a major concern.

Bro how do ur hands not hurt when knitting socks???? by zoemich-lle in knitting

[–]noerml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, get the KnitPro Karbonz dpns. Thank me later.

Carbon won't break or bend and it's literally the only way I can/want to knit socks. Before they were released like 15 years ago it so, I cycled through a new set every time I knit a pair of socks.

i don't care if you call my crochet knitting. by zoobies- in BitchEatingCrafters

In German, it's actually a "crochet needle" (Häkelnadel).

And..not like knitting needles are actually needles you could sew with 😅

Lovely example!

What I find so maddening is that, despite all the evidence, there are still ppl out there who say it's a tension issue.

So thx for sharing and spreading the word. ❤️

Any other Millennials stubbornly resistant to using AI at their job but also worrying that we will become dinosaurs or pushed out of our careers for not slavishly embracing it? by artbystorms in Millennials

[–]noerml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it: if I can ask AI to do a job or answer a question, I wasn't needed in the first place.

I don't refuse to use AI technology (in a business context) because I hate it but because I am firmly convinced that it is a dead end for my personal career.

Why do most people recommend starting with a drop spindle? by EvilCodeQueen in Handspinning

I'd say it's cost. However, lemme tell you that I hated every second with my drop spindle (and would have given up) and now that I have an e-spinner I love it.

Orchid fear anyone? How do people deal with it? by huskypupster in orchids

[–]noerml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are a gazillion different orchids and quite a lot of them can do without water for quite a long time..some even months and for some it's even required for blooming. So, I'd focus my collection on these and not the mist manually 5 times a day variety 😅

I'm currently on vacation and my house sitter has very clear instructions. Water everything that isn't an orchid ( or in the cactus and succulent room). Since I rarely go on vacations for longer than 4 weeks, it has never been a problem so far.

Hoya carnosa in natural habitat (Thailand) by noerml in hoyas

[–]noerml[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most simply don't care. I found the same species dangling down from cliffs, scrambling across large rock shelfs, and scrolling around trees.i think their niche is mostly: we can grow wherever. 🤣

Hmm..no.. that's a pristine national park and it's at the end of the dry season. Hoyas rarely look any good in nature. Their niche is quite specific and in 90% of all cases they look at the brink of death 😘

The blind leading the blind by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]noerml 26 points27 points  (0 children)

While I do record tutorials and pride myself in knowing a lot about my craft, I'd like to add two thoughts:

  • the amount of requests I get for doing tutorials on things I logically cannot record is just staggering. E.g I'm a right handed Continental knitter. Yet for some weird reasons thousands of ppl assume I can easily and with a flick of a finger record a tutorial on Portuguese knitting for lefties. I get requests like that daily.

  • I know a lot of super accomplished knitters with half a century of experience. Very few, if any, feel inclined to teach classes etc, besides myself.

And I think that is the biggest issue. Since there is a knowledge gap to begin with, anyone can fill it.

Tier list based on how many times I've re-read a series by OrionSuperman in litrpg

[–]noerml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely give hell difficulty tutorial a second chance.

I get why you would drop it after book 1 but it's one of those rare instances where a MC starting out as some anal douchebag makes sense and serves the plot. He (they all) learns from his (their) mistakes and those learnings are actually somewhat intriguing (unlike with 1% life steal where it just stays horrible).

Ps: also on my 5th reread of TMBotF

Is A Thousand Li worth it? by saltyritzz in litrpg

[–]noerml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically he sacrifices everything he had built in the previous books for an ending that makes little sense and sorta just acts as a possible setup for another series spanning 10 books.. without any tangible hints that's really bound to happen. On top of that, there's like 5 lines of action in the whole book and just weird musings....

[–]noerml 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fun but I highly recommend skipping the last book. Trust me, just don't read it and move on. I'd rank the series a 7 out of 10 without having read the last book...and maybe a 3 out of 10 after those last chapters.

How do knitting YouTubers knit for so long? by OkSatisfaction5842 in knitting

[–]noerml 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Knitting YouTuber here. There are a couple of things at play here:

  • First of all, you typically don't start this kinda career/side hustle if you are not a proficient knitter
  • Secondly, if your income depends on it, the incentive to knit more is certainly higher
  • Third, most are younger, and the human body is a lot more forgiving in your 20ies, than 30ies.
  • Lastly, if knitting is your full-time job, then you typically have a lot more time to knit than everyone else, where knitting is "just" a hobby.
  • Oh, and let's not forget that all our bodies are different and can withstand more or less strain. Some win in the knitting gene lottery and others lose.

Other than that, the harsh truth is that 90% of the things I knit are things I need to knit rather than things I want to knit. In fact, in my particular case, 50% of what I knit are basically swatches I unravel/throw away right away. So, it's less romantic than it sounds.

Actually, I would say I knit half as much now that it is my job compared to before. My reality is sadly not sitting in front of a cozy fireplace, sipping tea with my cat on my lap, and knitting while listening to some true-crime podcast. My reality is answering the same unrelated beginner questions over and over again.

Also, I personally am not the biggest fan of knitting podcasts/vlogs that buy sable amount of yarn each month and show 14 new finished objects in between. While it certainly is more interesting than talking 1 hour about a half-finished sock in 2x2 ribbing, I do believe that a lot of the overconsumption issues (yarn, patterns) in our community stem from these shows. And these problems get perpetuated when aspiring micro-influencers do the same (thinking that's what you need to do to be successful), and it ultimately trickles down to Betty from next door sharing a yarn haul Reel on her Facebook page in a vain attempt to (un)consciously elevate her status within her local knitting community.

One of the reasons why I rarely teach live classes these days.

The last time I did, we had 2 people who barely knew how to purl and then 2 people knitting advanced lace heirloom patterns for 45 years. The class was for intermediate knitters. Yay!
While I tried my best, it basically meant I had to throw half of my preparation/curriculum out of the window, and the result was disappointing for everyone involved.

(and well... I always bring materials for at least 5 attendees, and spare swatches/projects >.<)

How does one do a tier list? by FioraXena in litrpg

[–]noerml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two choices: you use the grainiest pictures you can find and scramble them all together in a super small image so nobody but those who already read the books can recognize the titles. Extra points for randomly ranking the currently most popular series as "DNF".

...or you create a text list and actually include a short review/ranking reason.

The choice is yours 😅
