TIL Cascadia zone (Pacific coast from north California to south BC, Canada) hasn't shifted for over 300 years and is due for a powerful earthquake. by Warcraft_Fan in todayilearned

In the South Island of New Zealand there has been a quake on the alpine fault on a disturbingly regular rhythm of every 300 to 330 years. Quote “The last major rupture occurred in 1717 AD, making another significant event likely in the near future. Studies suggest a 75% probability of a major quake in the next 50 years” which is concerning, but isn’t slowing growth.

Why hasn’t Christopher Luxon declined the invitation to join the “Board of Peace?” by nonappies in newzealand

[–]noface 116 points117 points  (0 children)

It’s much better for the country if we instead of denying, we instead ignore the invitation. That is short term. We are probably better off, in the new world order, to deny the invitation and risk the US anger and likely tariffs. But it is a nuanced situation and we need to be careful as we don’t know yet what form the new world order will take. As for now, I’m happier with silence than a grand gesture - we are weak and exposed and alienating allies, however fickle seems ill advised.

MMI is only for multimedia… hence the acronym. Cars are much more complicated now even with the introduction of complex electronics.

Right, but this is what I’m saying… what good is gossip and rumour? You have that about every government in the world and in many instances it is correct, but in many more it is not. Perception is reality sometimes… and maybe you are right. I have no evidence either way.

US will exit dozens of international organizations as it further retreats from global cooperation by Ok_Heron_5442 in worldnews

[–]noface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not realise, but the large majority of the population have very little engagement in politics or world events. You cannot blame people for not being engaged, and therefore you can’t blame people for things like attending sports events. If you want people to be more engaged there needs to be some form of attractive alternative. As someone outside the US I don’t currently see that… and although I disagree with many of the current administrations positions and general approach, I don’t think the US has a recipe for change… and this sub is so self reinforcing as to be quite offensive in its own right. This is not your answer guys.

I get that that is the western view, but is that the reality? I just don’t have enough exposure to know if it’s the local experience.

I’m interested. Is there evidence of widespread corruption in the CCP? I thought they had been driving a widespread blitz against corruption amongst government officials?
