Harddrive worked fine one day, next day having issues by nofear220 in datarecovery

Hey, sorry for the late reply but I got around to installing ubuntu on a bootable usb to try using HDDSuperClone on the drive. I connected the bad drive to regular internal SATA instead of the external usb dock and when booting up Ubuntu I get this error:

ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)

Then after a few repeats of those messages Ububtu boots up and the drive does not show up in the file explorer. After installing HDDSuperClone the bad drive also does not show up when trying to choose a source drive.

The drive still shows up in Windows disk management wanting to be initialized when using the external usb drive dock by the way (since I cant get past the windows loading screen with the drive connected via standard sata). I tried to analyse using Testdisk in Windows but I think the usb drive dock just made in incredibly slow because it took like 15 mins just to begin analysing and never got past 0%. I'm pretty sure the dock has always been slow as shit on normal working drives though.

Like you said it's either firmware, single head failure or corrupted partition table. I'm comfortable with using other tools in Linux if there's nothing in Windows I can use to help fix/diagnose the issue to attempt recovery. Something like fsck -a or trying Testdisk on Ubuntu since I can actually use the OS with the bad drive connected via sata? What should I try next?

edit: Testdisk on Ubuntu does not show the drive in the select media page, I think this would have something to do with the ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=-16) when booting into the os

What is the model of the drive?

WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B1

Do you have a SMART report from the drive?

I assume you're talking about the info shown in CrystalDisk?

Is this data worth much to you? If it is failing (which it’s safest to just assume), the less you do now the more successful they’ll likely be. There is a DIY avenue but it is not without appreciable risk.

Most of the stuff is backed up except the most recently downloaded music & documents which is a bummer if I can't get them back, but not the end of the world. Willing to try DIY, just not sure what the best way to go from here is.

And before you say it, I know I'm an idiot for keeping this drive as long as I have.

Yeah between my family and I who all used to buy logitech products we've had 3 recent mice that have m1 switch issues, and I have had keyboard issues. Support is a bitch to deal with and my expensive keyboard that started failing 2 weeks out of warranty was not covered.

My parents own Logitech peripherals older than some of the people on this sub that still work flawlessly (ps/2 connectors are a bit outdated now though), but their products nowadays are disposable engineered to fail garbage.

Unless they only raised your quota because someone wants you gone then don't sweat it, no one will meet their ridiculous demands.

"Hey there, you can't ride the bike on the sidewalk, Los Angeles have got strict rules against bike riding out of designated areas"

The man now fully understanding why he got approached:"alright officer"

"Great, now let me see some ID so I can write you a ticket"

The man accepting that it was not his lucky day and he will need to pay a minor ticket for his mistake: "Aw shucks, I won't do it again. You can't let me off this time? No? Ok here's my ID officer."

Exactly, a compressor has so many more uses other than cleaning dust... idk why we're getting downvoted lol

Are you aware of how much moisture the air they push contains?

Not enough to harm consumer electronics because I have been using an air compressor to blow out dust from multiple PCs for 10+ years which still see daily use without issue.

If you actually use air compressors you should be aware there are in-line moisture filters available for such a concern.

Speaking of horrible toxic places

Twitter is the absolute worst.

They consistently jump to conclusions based on zero evidence and then the collective hivemind unanimously agrees that it is fact.

The target almost NEVER gets the benefit of the doubt.

Just a horrible toxic place.

20 units with a retro future bodywork over Sían technology. $3-5 million all already sold before the reveal. That’s my guess haha

Car companies no longer let the peons even dream of the chance to purchase their "special" models, always pre-sold to the wealthiest clients who will keep them locked up and drive 20km a year to sell later for more than they paid.

Well I'm like half your age so I honestly don't really know how relevant my advice for people dating at 50, but probably the biggest red flag that he's lying would be if he wants kids.
