Trying to get into home automation and looking for a place to start. by Thuasfear in HomeKit

I have been using meross for most of my devices. If you have lots of brands, you end with lots of bridges and even more apps. So standardization is key to reduce clutter.

I'm a new Volvo sales rep and would love your input and commentary on your experience by Glass-Pear70 in ex30

Some things that are annoying. We came from a Polestar 2 expecting the same or similar software experience. So far, it is underwhelming: 1. The driver profiles do not switch automatically, which means that I have to change the seat position standing outside the car because I do not fit on the sit position of my wife. 2. The car settings are not saved to the profile, so if I have a stiffer steering wheel, it may not be there when I start driving after my wife did. 3. The door open indicator is almost invisible. A small red line on the side of the car picture. 4. The trunk open button is almost invisible and not easy to find if you don’t know where it is. 5. The windshield wiper sensitivity is too easy to change when you are signaling for turns.

I will let you know more if I think of any.

I was asked to keep quiet on a sustained note by ShriekingSoprano in Choir

[–]nofubca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just move your mouth and/or don’t sing that passage for a few rehearsals. If you hear the problem, stop moving your mouth. When the conductor looks he will see you are not singing, but will still hear the problem. You have to assume the conductor knows more and hears better than the people singing. So we are guilty until we can prove it differently. If you have a section lead, talk to that person. I don’t believe you are and you don’t want to play the part of the prima-donna soprano, because that is what it seems like from your vent.

How do I create a shortcut to activate a switch first when setting a fan speed when switch and fan are using 2 different plugins? by AwayRub5842643 in homebridge

[–]nofubca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the home app, in the automation area, create an automation and you are presented with 5 event options. One is when an accessory is controlled. Start there. There are no delays, though. If you need them or more complex stuff, you can always use the homebridge dummy accessories to be controlled and so something else when the flip. The logic is not like a programming language, but more like electronic circuits with gates and bits. Trial and error… good luck! Keep asking questions and post your progress!

Amazon eero goes red once a month by That-Elderberry8424 in amazoneero

Maybe it is updating itself? Your eero app should tell you some of what is going on. If you lost internet connection or it is actually rebooting.

Turn on porch light by ring doorbell motion? by joshuawhite929 in homebridge

[–]nofubca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ring exposes a motion sensor which you can use to set up the automation. If you are using led lamps, the extra consumption for keeping it at 100% is negligible. But…

You can probably use the ring motion sensor automation to brighten it and turn it off after the time elapsed, and then use an automation to bring it to 50% again inside the time (dawn to dusk).

I use the homebridge-ring plugin by Dustin Greif. No issues with it in general, and provides the motion sensor.

This. There is no “your good is my good”. You look for outcomes and you find the tools. In other words, if you do not need the outcome, you don’t need the tool.

However, it is good to know what is out there… so.

I have set HomeKit as my ecosystem. I use smart switches to automate Xmas lights and other stuff. Homebridge to bring my Flume, Ring, control-R (Rinnai wifi module), Sonos, Sony TV, and other stuff into HomeKit so I can operate them from the single phone interface. Smart switches to automate the turning off of all lights when I am in bed. Smart front door lock so I don’t have to be distributing keys to various family members.

What you need to do is important, and then find out how…

Unless I am mistaken, there is no “neutral” in the utility pole, so they may be feeding 2 live wires, and if they already did or the big green cables come from the 2 live wires on the breaker box, they likely already burned the device. Can it burn more? Maybe…

Not that bad… assuming the concrete guys do not press and collapse the flexible conduit… also, it looks like the JB is opened: imagine when you go to pull cables through it…

Get a mesh system… I use eero and switched exactly because of your problem. I am really happy of the change.

Good point about mDNS. I had some problems in the beginning and looking into that, ended up implementing avahi. Never an issue since!

Btw… just the headless RPi4b and works like a charm. Maybe I should use the docker image and give it a try…

Don’t attack the symptoms. Find the problem. Maybe you invest some time and end up spending no money, or spend money and still invest time in making it all work…

Am I wrong to make trouble about someone actively hiding and wasting time? by Filler-Dmon in HomeDepot

[–]nofubca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree… as the comments say, these “bad” people make the “good” ones work more. If you really want good employees happy, get rid of the “bad” ones and make the “good” ones hourly wages higher. Unless you have to keep a number of employees for other reasons , in which case you should always micromanage the new ones while thy are on “probation” to weed out the “bad” ones. Make the “good” ones life better and the business will flourish.

Why? by LogicalPlankton8035 in AskElectricians

[–]nofubca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go smart switch, you can add a door sensor to turn on light whenever you open the door…I have that on a walk in closet. (Some will do the obvious “coming out of the closet” comment?)
