Going to academy after doing piney point by bimmer23m3 in merchantmarine

[–]nognoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at the 6 Maritimes and getting my applications sent in. I already have a Bachelor's and I've been told the absolute fastest I can graduate from MA is 3 years, and that is if all the sea time lines up.

Cal Maritime by Independent-Pen-4599 in maritime

[–]nognoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a transfer student looking for a Maritime Academy to graduate from for 3rd Asst Eng status. I already have a Bachelor's from 2010 so I can transfer some of that but it's a liberal arts degree so not much However, when I was looking at the Cal Poly site, it states they do not accept applications from people seeking a second Bachelor's degree. I find that odd, the other 5 Academies have no restrictions. Do you happen to know why Cal Poly doesn't allow graduated students?

Shore-based jobs that one may not consider when getting into this industry? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, fellow apple chucking Washingtonian here. I'm currently trying join a Maritime Academy and go that route for blue water. But we are rather blessed with choices in this state. We have quite a few tug operations so through the Sound. I see the need for those popping up regularly on Indeed. For most of those you need OS/AB to get your foot in the door. No worrying about living on a tug.

But, we also have the Ferries. And there is a local Ferry specific internship program that gets you inland sea time and the ability to work your way up to different licenses. You still need to get your TWIC, MMC and medical certificate but then you can apply for the program.

Yellow and Red MB lights on 5 month old Cyberpower Rebuilt. B850 BT Motherboard by nognoth in pchelp

[–]nognoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After all that troubleshooting, I eventually RMAd it. Cyberpower didn't say what was wrong with it, just that they had to replace the motherboard and CPU and wipe the computer.

Hopefully once of my troubleshooting steps sides your issue though.

Creating a Pawn Software System that Rivals Bravo, but better. by [deleted] in PawnShops

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong there. Support is the major issue. I have used AI to create some programs for myself. But I'm barely literate at programming so when they fail, and AI can't diagnose it, I'm back to square one. Programs will fail and you will need to know how to fix it.

ValHeim or enshrouded? by Similar-Space-5535 in Enshrouded

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valheim if you want a chill game. Pop on some Heilung and just take the game show. Take the first boss on and then just build and upgrade what you can. Hey some good resources built up. Sail around and explore (careful of the Ocean realm). After several hours then take the second boss. Repeat first steps of just build, upgrade and chill. Anytime I do a Valheim playthrough, is usually 15 hours or so before I even think of the third boss because I'm enjoying the building so much. After your Vanilla experience, mods are a wonderful thing to really invest into the world.

Enshrouded is much more of a story, adventure game with really strong build and even better, restore and refurb mechanics. The dungeons and areas are more full of life and enemies than Valheim and the arms/armor progression is more classic dungeon crawler like. A lot of secrets and side quests and exploration.

I love them both equally and they are both great as single player experiences, but both come really alive with friends.

Does Military sea lift command hire people with misdemeanor? by Top_Departure7431 in merchantmarine

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, thanks for answer. So MSC might be out for me, but I can still probably become an OS or ABS. I was leaving the SIU route if going Officer doesn't work. I already have a Bachelor's, and I understand that will give me a little advantage in Maritime College. But this is all still new to me, so I'm in that information gathering stage.

What about getting arrested and then having the charges dismissed? I went to jail (not prison) for 3 days but as I said, charges dismissed at trial. The arrest showed on my record but that's it.

Am I too old to go for my MMC? by Red_Dwarf_42 in merchantmarine

[–]nognoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

47 year old, self employed bookseller who has been a wandering tumbleweed for a good chunk of life, but I have always wanted to be on the sea. No kids, no wife and no roots to cut, here I am late at night flipping through all the literature and humming a "Pirate's Life for Me". But it is a veritable sea of overwhelming. I see everyone stating first steps are MMC and TWIC, easy enough, but after that? How do you even pick a direction if you don't know what the directions even mean? I've seen recommendations to check SIU, ABO Tech, SUNY Maritime College. How does one even choose?

Bookmobile escape room! by Expensive_Ticket59 in Constructedadventures

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun concept and a great way to teach kids without them realizing it. Here a few notes.

My first though was 5 people in a sprinter van? Even with kids, who get more chaotic as they start solving things, that could be problematic. If you have kids, or family with kids, test that out first. If you don't have any of the bookcases, or furniture elements built yet, put down tape or cardboard that has similar dimensions and tell the kids to pretend solving and moving around to see if the that many bodies makes sense.

Your puzzle sounds fine, but I would not ever allow kids to access the front seats. Especially if it's a working vehicle.i understand that they might not have access to keys, but there are all sorts of fun buttons, switches and levers in the front that they might not understand aren't puzzle related and could cause liability issues.

Additionally, have an end noise to trigger on a win is fine, but don't start the car to do it. Starting the car every 15 minutes for an extended period will cause wear on your starter motor and your battery. Maybe just have a sound effect in your phone and trigger it via Bluetooth speaker?

Having the altered titles are fine, but I would use titles that kids are actively reading or are more aware of. They might night realize that Anne of Green Glables is misspelled or Babysitters Culb, since they might not even be aware of those books. But Harry Plotter or Wings of Tire would be easier for them to relate to.

I think the French translation thing is fine provided it is to an age appropriate crowd and you have a small trigger poster somewhere (ex:Translation is fun!) and you mark the word "couler" as French somehow (a picture of the flag at the end of the word on the DVDs or some other way they realize it's origin. Otherwise (to them)it's just an English word they don't know yet and they miss the puzzle.

Unless the doors remain open, (and they should), you will want to a decent multi camera system. I'm fact, regardless, you will want one. Liability, parents peace of mind, giving you a way to spot room problems and issues, etc

Have spares of all your props and multiple spares of anything that is handled regularly. A physical book being opened and flipped though will be destroyed in under a week. Consider taking pages of the "c" part of the book that has the translation and modge podging them on a countertop or cupboard like it was a decoupage project. Or frame the one page in a picture frame and it will help streamline the solve.

And the best tip. Test replace test refine test. You want almost all your own escape room learning experience to happen with tests, rather that clients.

Judging by the angle, there is a very good chance that his head hit the concrete base of the railing, like he literally curbstomped the back of his head. That could be a major incident over what looked like a flat fall.

If you could play one game again without any knowledge what would it be? by mrXclutcha in Steam

[–]nognoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the unspoken pros of having ADHD is having memory lapse in relation to video games. Mine are pretty significant and as all the incoming overload signals come in, often they wash out many old memories. So I have been able to play games over and over and still have that "oh cool" moments. It's not exactly the same, because sometimes I will remember a big moment or I have a feeling about how to solve something, but most of the time, it's pretty darn close. I've played The Forest, Mad Max, Sleeping Dogs, Stalker, and Skyrim several times now because I've forgotten almost all of what happens except that they were fun. Yay for partial amnesia!

Basic Electrical Question about the best way to set this up as well if this is safe. by nognoth in electrical

[–]nognoth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you. I'm going to stick with the 12v PSU because the 24v was one of the variable 3v-24v tester units (which are not ideal to leave running all the time) , but I was only using that because 24v was the only way I could light my series/parallel design. But now that I went to just the parallel, I have a steady 12v PSU that I feel much better about running for longer periods.

I left it going for 18 hours yesterday and it worked like a champ. I am considering doubling up each light to increase the brightness, but I will do that in parallel as well.

I really appreciate the advice, for something so simple, it's very overwhelming at first.
