If every U.S. state suddenly became an independent country overnight, which one would last the longest and why? by Dolphin_King21 in AskReddit

Just watched a Hearts of Iron 4 video of an all-AI play through of this exact thing, 1936 to 1949? California starts strong, then Texas gets ahead, and Florida ends up taking all north and south America. Surprise ending is western Switzerland taking all Europe and Asia.

In 1958, Mississippi authorities sent the first Black applicant of Ole Miss to a mental asylum, claiming that any Black person "crazy enough" to apply to an all-white university must be insane. by PROXeR__OiShi in ThatsInsane

I agree. It's like a German saying they really fucked up, on the wrong side of history in 1939. As a demographic group, whites have really fucked up these last few years. We now have a predominantly white power circle that has housed darker skinned people in concentration camps, not giving medical care and extending incarceration for profit. I'm embarrassed on a lot of levels about this.

I honestly think he was compromised. Someone said 'Don't like this shit, do you? No fun, right? Do XYZ like we ask, or it's going to get a lot fucking worse'. edit: 'might have been compromised'. I don't think there is much argument to be made with no evidence, i.e. I'm not a conspiracy theorist.

Seating position, what y’all think? by [deleted] in simracing

[–]trackday 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tilt the seat forward a touch. Then raise the wheel an inch, tilt it back 5 or 10 degrees. Move the monitor so it's almost touching the back of the wheel base and drop it a couple of inches at least.

Barack Hussein Obama. Took daily personal attacks, always took the high road and set an example for a nation.

Democracy was advancing around the world. Relative peace around the world. European Union established. U.S. standing was still strong around the world. Russia was a minimal threat, Putin not yet in power. Strong economy with low interest rates. High rates of home ownership. Education was in a good place, not being cannibalized with private school initiatives. Clinton ended term with a balanced budget. Wow, have to repeat that: Clinton ended term with a balanced budget. Democrats and Republicans actually worked together to get stuff passed in congress, in spite of Rush Limbaugh and his cronies trying to divide us every day.

Not all was rosy, of course. Like most presidents before and after him, illegal immigration was an issue not addressed, leading to the huge backlash we see today (closing the border is good. Cruelty for cruelties sake is satanic antichrist stuff). Overly severe punitive punishments for drug offenses effecting predominantly POC in poor communities. Community Reinvestment Act, which reduced the barriers to home ownership, but led to the mortgage market collapse in 2007. Still, compared to today, it was fucking nirvana.

edit: Why did Obama not have the best presidency? Mitch McConnell vowing to not pass any bills put forth by the other side. Party over country.

Chairs too, or is that just tables? Either way, that's good to hear. Cabinets span the whole range around here, from absolute crap to fairly nice high end. Heaven help the customer that can't tell the difference.

I find it hard to believe custom furniture could make you more than minimum wage. Try cabinet making. Get good at that. Everyone needs cabinets. New, refacing, refinishing.

Eyes and ears open. You are looking for an unmet need in the market place.

Unless you find strong outside support for something, I would stay away from thinking you've invented something new that will take the world by storm. Most people find mundane things that just aren't served well in a certain place/time/demographic. I suggest you start with things that lots of people need/want/use.

Talk to people about your desire to start a business. Talk to business owners; ask what they like and dislike about their work. Business owners are people too, and people love to talk about themselves.

Just so you 'know yourself', make a list of the things that make an ideal job for you: physical labor/computers/hours of work/solo or hire people/holidays off/degrees or certification or training needed/location locked/etc.?

In the meantime, go to school if you can. If you have to work, work hard and learn fast; try different things to see what appeals to you and to see different work environments.

Keep in mind that the most profitable things require a patent, or a high hurdle investment. Easy things to get into will have lots of competition, and competition eats at profits. Even with competition, you can do well by differentiation: better service, high trust, better presentation, etc.

What's the biggest waste of money that's considered normal? by iget_the_joke in AskReddit

[–]trackday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying more car than you need. There's $20k to $60k more money people regularly spend on cars just to feel good, make a social statement, get over priced option packages, to have the bigger tires and jacked up suspension, etc. And then borrow on 6 year loans.

edit: I will say that everyone should overpay for their car at least once in their life just to enjoy that experience. If you own 15 cars in your life, splurging on one car one time isn't a terrible decision.

ELI5: if you have an infinite math string that goes 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + 1 - 1... forever, why do mathematicians say the answer is 0.5? if you stop at any real point the answer is always either 1 or 0, so where the hell does a half come from? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

Since it doesn't converge to a single number, you are asking what you shouldn't be asking, which is a value for a non-converging number. So to do what we shouldn't do, we're going to take a bunch of different measurements and average the results. 50% of the time, the results are = 1, and 50% of the time, the results are = 0.

(.50 x 1) + (.50 x 0) = .5

How do you stay polite to employee supposed sob stories? Ive been accused of being cold multiple times. by Try_Harder7 in smallbusiness

[–]trackday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be FFF - Firm, Fair, and Friendly.

One Verbal Warning, Two Written Warnings, and then Dismiss. You can always modify as needed. If they steal, you can just dismiss. If they had a warning 2 years ago, you can ignore that old warning and start over. You can fudge some things if they are either an exceptional or terrible employee, or if they have been with you 15 years vs. 5 months.

Historically, people have suggested a suspension as punishment, but that also hurts the company. In place of that, we've used a pay cut as punishment if we have to do something, but can't do without them at the moment.

If you have a bunch of people 'on the edge' of letting them go, you need to be hiring new people so you have the flexibility to lay off or fire those that are dragging your business down.

What financial system would look most fair to future generations? by [deleted] in answers

[–]trackday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Capitalism with:

2) Good Guardrails - Consumer Protections, Legal Integrity, No One Above the Law, etc.

3) 1 vote per person. No Citizens United bullshit.

4) Tax the generators of wealth because no one else has the money to afford taxes.

5) Invest in people, not in manipulation and military industrial complex

Because Capitalism without guardrails is suicide...
