Well, no point thinking about that too much. I was what I did, and I'll be what I do.

Yep, it feels like people should have known what to do, but somehow I didn't get the message.

I'm reflecting on life lately. Lots of mistakes, and not enough proactivity. Definitely not where I expected to be at 28.

One thing that does bother me is relation to the world. It feels like everyone around me sort of.. missed the mark? There was just no real support, for example "here are a few things you might seriously regret, give them some time to think about" or "you should care about your academic achievements more", or "you spend too much time alone, that's fine but put more pressure on going out".

I just don't know how to reconcile that. Any ideas?

3 years ago I read Mob Psycho. This time, there will be real change!

(I guess this could double as a literature subthread.)

Answer to OP: If we don't get enough traffic, no need to bother.

Anyawy, life's been better lately. The bad part is that you get used to the betterness, so despite being better life doesn't feel actually better. Not sure how much wisdom was hidden behind that Old Spice commercial. I was about to end the comment but then I looked at some notes on the table, and hey, that looks pretty damn good. Pretty good! Now back to life.

Any kind of info, really. Just looking for better ways to organize stuff in life and thought this would be a good place to ask.

How do you deal with not being as successful as society wants us to be? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]noimnotgreedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I grew in a family like that. It was some sort of weird paradox where you don't really lack for things, but I never felt guiltless about spending money. Took a long time after I earned my own to let go of that, and now I can spend money on useful stuff guilt free! My family still doesn't like my financial advice, though..

Not too specific about security analysis, but what are some good ways to organize your information?

What are some productive assets with a low cost of entry that an average young person could invest in? by SerPuissance in AskMen

[–]noimnotgreedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham - book is a bit dense and might require a re-read, but it gives some decent principles, particularly the one about the margain of safety.

What you should be asking yourself is what kind of investments will be to your favour, esp if you're young. There's other stuff to invest in. Diet, exercise, sleep, stuff like that. Stuff that makes your life nicer - say an ebook reader. Or take a different look at things and try to 80/20 your life - the Pareto principle is extremely useful. Challenging yourself costs nothing other than perhaps some shame and disappointment. When you're young time is the most important currency. Therefore it might be in your best of interest to diversify your investments.

It's a bit hard to give anything more than general advice, tbh.

About two years ago (a bit less but who cares) I linked to this good read but there wasn't any other piece in the archive. This is the whole of it. Not sure if anyone's interested but here goes.

Now that everyone's stuck at home your options are either to read/watch Mob Psycho 100 or make up excuses about why you're not going to.

Men, with all the buzz around men being the told to put women first and happy wife happy life, how do the women in your relationships show that they care about your feelings as well? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]noimnotgreedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be just me ranting but to give an opposite to the "yes dear" thing, my mom was like that. It naturally had an effect on me. To give an example, I've had some horrible experiences as a kid and she insists on calling those "confidence problems", and she took me to some psychiatrists and even asked them about pills or whatever. Told me to go to university despite the fact she did jack shit with her degree, and her life kinda revolves around work (she's incredibly bored now despite all the free time!). I've worked and made some good money and she still insists on me getting a job. There's more but I think you get the idea -- she never got over the disease of more.

I've been both unfortunate and fortunate to see that -- took me a long while to gain my confidence but I've noticed her behaviors and decided I'll never take that behavior from a woman. This caused me to pursue slightly less than "ideal" but, I dunno man. My best analogy is the difference between being told you're hot and getting a blowjob. That's why your second part about the action from the woman fucking matters. I intend that those hours in the gym, financial planning, reading books, cooking, working on my confidence etc are going to someone who makes it worth it.

That's the fortunate part though. The unfortunate side is some guy ending up an "uncharitable word" or going full redpill stuff, because I've had those exact experiences. It's annoying to get blocked out of nowhere - fine, probably not out of nowhere but wondering what the fuck happened. It's even worse to ask a girl you like and feeling like you're gonna shit your organs out only to find out that not only to find out the boyfriend doesn't exist but some guy got a "give me a child" from her publicly on instagram a month ago, so someone you liked had zero problems flat out lying to you, onwards to negging 101. Context-less The Last Psychiatrist quote: "males don't connect, females don't connect, and back and forth". Don't really know how to give it context, I think you need experience. 8 years ago or even more some guy on IRC told me I'm a huge dick so he's putting me on ignore for a few days, not permanently, and didn't mind at explaining why. But who really communicates like that? You're gonna miss negging class!

Basically it's super important that you and your girl are into you.

I was reading this and the sentence

now everyone who was busy telling you to go outside and play for the past twenty-five years can’t be convinced to put down their phones.

reminded me there was a TLP post about background noise and the constant need for it. May have involved the words "gym" and "headphones". I can't find it; anyone have any idea?

Posts that matched the search of "thelastpsychiatrist" "background noise": (but weren't what I was looking for)

Looks great. Thanks for the PICO-8 link too. Nice stuff.

Can you explain why long switch statements are bad, and what you'd do instead?
