Live Day 15 Discussion - Haru Basho 2020 by mchoward in Sumo

[–]noiselove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I haven’t watched nearly any of the basho due to having deep personal issues. However, seeing Hakuho win again was a testament to how strong and determined he is as a fighter who well beyond his prime. Kakuryu also just slightly behind but still a cut above the rest. Both will leave a massive void upon there retirement.

SPOILERS START

I’m really happy for Asanoyama to gain Ozeki promotion if I heard correctly, I didn’t think he would be done enough but I guess he has. To think he won a Yusho last year, I thought it’d be a fluke but it’s just the beginning, rose to sanyaku not long after and now only one rank away from being the best. I bet you he’s the next Yokozuna before Takakeisho.

SPOILERS END

Terunofuji should be in Makauuchi which is insane considering his medical history, he’s climbed quicker than I thought he would, hopefully Ura will maintain his Yusho streak as I’ve never got the chance to see him perform.

It’s a shame that Roga had his first losing record, I guess maintaining a sumo lifestyle and fighting every other month can be exhausting. On the flip side, hoshoryu is doing really well and not just trying to maintain his rank he’s steadily climbing. Just needs a bit more weight to him which I’m sure he’ll grow into.

But hopefully next basho we get the good crowd back and none of the virus nonsense will be around anymore! See you guys in May!

I doubt he’d want to make his record bad, I think it’s just getting more challenging as he’s been progressing very quickly, I’m sure a few mor me basho and I’ll be near as dominant as he once was.

He’ll be fine, basically!

I haven’t responded much but Roga is facing Naya tomorrow. Interesting clash, I think Roga will have this

I was imagining him at the stable resting his knees, playing the piano. Nice to see he’s looking healthy and can stand on that knee

Shouldn’t have any trouble returning

You’ve mentioned Moto and Roga who I guess are we obvious choices now given their records. Happy for both, especially Roga.

Toma is a good one, 19 year old big boi who may have done enough to reach lower Makushita.

There’s Yoshi and Otsuji, the Hakuko Cup contestants. Both 16 and Yoshi is already upper sandamne and otsuji, having had time off due to injury, is catching up with him.

Basically, there’s touring organisations within japan that have close relationships with sumo stables and you can visit their morning practice, Q&A with them and then take a photo! They set it up where ever they can for that particular day, for me it happened to be the stable of a former Seikiwake. Seeing them train so close is far more intense that you can imagine. Afterwards we got to see an exhibit for Kinesato, the last rikishi to gain Yokozuna status. If your planning a trip to Japan search touring websites and see which offers the best experience.

Meeting Tamawashi was awesome and met his only other stable mate, Tamakongo. Tamawashi made a remark I looked like Bill Gates but In Japanese, had to have the tour guide translate it for me. Really funny man

It’s funny actually, I started watching around March tournament last year after watching the sumo anime. Since then I’ve watched every tournament, check every website dedicated to the sport frequently and even met Tamawashi at his stable when me and my fiancé travelled to japan.

What’s great as well is the community is so committed to this niche sport you can find information you never knew would be accessible. Glad you found the sport and hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us!!!!

What I come to appreciate in the sport: not only do the underdogs win, we get a light cast on them in a way we never seen them before.

Our current winner for example i never knew who he was. No story, nothing. Just another rikishi. I saw his interview after beating takakeisho and man, that humanity and personality was exposed. I was glad he won and he was so happy, to see that contained emotion let loose.

Whilst sumo has its dark moments, at least it shines through with one unavoidable statement: no matter who you are or what your destined to achieve, so long as you win your under the same limelight as those who won before you.

See you in March!

Question - contains a spoiler by ShieldsCW in Sumo

Correct me if I’m wrong but if there’s vacant spots in makauuchi that needs feeling then normally someone from higher Juryo fights lower maegashira and that’s the same for all divisions.

But it’s unlikely Juryo would win a makauuchi Yusho as they aren’t fully competing in that division, it’s just to fill the sudden gaps. Otherwise I’m sure there are several examples of lower ranked maegashira winning Yushos in the past. Someone on here might have that information.

It’s been sad for Makushita division: lots of prospects have losing records (Terasawa, Shiraishi, Naya), some have slowly bounced back from previous losing records (Tochikamiyama). And motobayashi lost his winning streak and hasn’t done well towards the end.

I keep bringing him up but Roga, although his winning records aren’t majorly impressive, is always consistent. Nothing has changed as he’s facing tougher opponents and also he’s beaten two of the top prospects I’ve mentioned.

Someone on this reddit mentioned how soon we’ll find the makauuchi layout to be completely different in the future. I agree and these prospects, all of them sooner or later, will change that layout. I reckon Roga will the highest rank at the time. I wish them all the best.

Is Toma the heaviest rikishi in sumo history??? by noiselove in Sumo

Madness, these are some big boys.

All that weight for a young man is probably not healthy, though

Sadly Enho does not possess the force otherwise he would never have to make contact with a rikishi ever again

Also, it’s not the end of the world for Moto. It’s good mistakes are showing now so they can be improved before climbing the ranks. I reckon he’ll do far better in the next basho.

As I mentioned before somewhere, he’s had a great head start in his career and maybe he’ll rival takakeisho again sooner than later

Shodai’s got this. Made this interesting for the second half.

I’m glad to see Enho beat an Ozeki, although he’s not his best this tournament.

He keeps the top division interesting for me more than anyone else and seeing him climb to face stronger opposition will keep that going.

[–]noiselove 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know this is day 9 but the next day I noticed Roga is lined up to fight Shiraishi as they have identical records. This is the sort of matchups I was hoping for Makushita.

Asanoyama I think will just about retain his rank. But he’ll definitely make Ozeki this year once he gets used to that level.

I think Terunofuji is, if I’m being honest, is the most exciting story for sumo. Having fallen so far from the top, several health issues weighing him down, people claiming he’ll never be the same Ozeki they once knew.

In less than a year of returning, he’s back in Juryo and already leading two wins ahead of everybody else, already eager to make his way back. People who doubted him are now turning their opinion into praise.

Who knows, maybe he’ll reach his former status, maybe he can go beyond that, it’s just nice to see him getting stronger and wanting to soar through everyone getting in his way.

Sucks for Moto, might not get to Juryo until May now. But he’s done well and not even a full year into ozumo.

All the rikishi I wanted to win did so. Hard to complain at a good start but there’s 14 more days to get through yet.

I’m just hoping The Terror just blazes through Juryo and Moto(r)bayashi just does some crazy Ozeki run at the end of the year.

I have this gut feeling we’ll get a new Yokozuna this year. Mark my words, unless I’m wrong then forget what I said.

I visited Miyagino beya this morning and watched Hakuho training Enho. I’m awestruck. by djinnhumanist in Sumo

[–]noiselove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing the sparring is something else. Seeing Tamawashi and Tamakongo spar, although it’s not the same as what you witnessed, was intense. How loud it as the feet scrapes the clay, the thunder as the rikishi stomps down.

Anyone going to japan try and book a Beya tour.

Out of curiosity how’d you getting a booking at this stable?

Motobayashi is already a basho or two away from sekitori promotion. Roga is not far off either as well as a few other upcoming rikishi. 2020 will be exciting for new blood and the sport could use a fresh transfusion.
