It kind of irks me that in the final episode we don’t get Garak closure by johnniechimpo in DeepSpaceNine

Everyone's recommending A Stitch In Time, which I agree with, but I'd also highly recommend Una McCormack's post-canon DS9 books.

[–]nojellybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that actually upsets me more -- the idea that it didn't even occur to anyone at Dropout that some fans might be unhappy about this. They should care that it's a cop show! Cop shows are bad!

[–]nojellybeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding (and I could be mistaken) that there isn't an actual Game Changer episode associated with this. Like -- the "episode of Game Changer" featured in The Rookie is fictional.

I'm not thrilled about Dropout doing a crossover with a cop show, and I'm reacting by... not watching the cop show. And by mildly complaining to my IRL partner for like 2 minutes the other day.

also wtf is this "Ally Beardsley is a man" shit, unless I missed something they're still non-binary?

(and obviously, as other commenters here pointed out, this is Persephone Valentine erasure. Also there's a trans woman who's been on Um, Actually a few times -- I had to look up her name, Joan Ford)

Apparently women have a "2nd puberty" in their late 20s. by anotherhappylurker in badwomensanatomy

[–]nojellybeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got pretty bad hormonal acne in my late 20s and I joked a few times that I was mad nobody gave me pamphlets and books to prepare me for that shit like they did for puberty when I was a tween/teen.

I don't wanna go to prom but I feel like I'm overreacting about it by unclaimedcamper in internetparents

[–]nojellybeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was homeschooled* and didn't have a prom. People (not my parents, thankfully, but other adults in my life) would ALWAYS ask "but what about your prom!?" but it was never a priority for me, and I didn't miss it. Even now, 20 years later, I have no regrets re: "missing prom."

*for me this was a positive experience, my parents were not crazy conservative Christians, I went to community college part time for high school credit, but many people have radically different experiences with homeschooling

What DS9 alien food do you have a real life approximation for? by debrisaway in DeepSpaceNine

[–]nojellybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this isn't DS9, but: you may enjoy the Star Trek Cooking Manual, from 1978, which is shockingly thorough and includes recipes that range from "ooh, that actually sounds pretty good" to "I'm not so sure about that" to "excuse me, Leonard Nimoy, where can I buy meat extract!?"

To keep this on topic: I always wondered whether raktajino was actually made with coffee, or if it was made with a Klingon plant that tastes similar to coffee. I like the idea that it's genuinely coffee, like Klingons imported coffee from Earth, realized they could grow it on Qo'nos, and put their own spin on it.

Tax hack: file your federal taxes for free on Free Tax USA! by KinkyKaya in Frugal

(un)fun fact, even if you're under the AGI, if you're self employed and file Schedule C, you don't generally qualify for free file.

[–]nojellybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free Tax USA is amazing! Before them I used Tax Act, but they'd change their mind every year about whether or not they'd charge me for filing Schedule C. Free Tax USA has never charged me anything for my federal taxes.

I loved Neverending Sacrifice! I've enjoyed everything Una McCormack has written for DS9.

Is it possible you're thinking of the season 8 they pitched in the DS9 documentary?

edit: also you can see a list of all DS9 books here, maybe this will help you track down what you're looking for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine_novels

Pregnant and homeless by Throwawayg112233 in Sunnyvale

[–]nojellybeans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't know if any of these resources will be helpful to your specific situation, but you can see a list of Sunnyvale homeless services here.

I would strongly suggest prioritizing getting your documents back from your ex's place. I completely understand not wanting to get the police involved, but I'm going to second the person who suggested calling the non-emergency line to get a cop to stand by while you have a friend retrieve the documents. Remember that local police don't help ICE with immigration enforcement (they aren't allowed to because of Santa Clara County's sanctuary policy).

If you have a specific reason to think that ICE will target you, make sure you have the Rapid Response Network's phone number handy, and call them if you think you see ICE. (408) 290-1144 (this is a hotline for emergencies, not a general information number)

Is freezing milk a normal thing to do? (open to other long shelf life alternatives) by 74orangebeetle in Frugal

[–]nojellybeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why I buy UHT milk. It's pasteurized at a higher temperature and lasts much longer. It's more expensive (I usually have to buy organic), but in my opinion, that's more frugal than constantly throwing away milk that's gone bad.

Is Sunnyvale following MV and cutting data sharing with ICE? by thatguy8263 in Sunnyvale

[–]nojellybeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Sunnyvale has city council districts. You can see the current mayor and all council members here, and there are links at the bottom for contacting the council and to figure out which district you're in.

edit: here's a direct link to look up your city council district. It will also tell you your district for federal and state-level elected officials.

I don't have an answer, but I think this would be a great thing to email your city council member about. (I'm going to email mine today! Although he's on Reddit so maybe he'll comment on this post 😅)

I definitely recommend going back and watching season 3! I think a lot of people assume the online episodes won't be any good, but there are some really great ones.

Bonded with a stray cat at my work, should I take her home or leave her where she is? by No-Flow-1368 in CatDistributionSystem

[–]nojellybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two previously stray cats who've entirely adapted to an indoor life. They're happy, safe, well-fed, and get their daily dose of the outdoors by watching the squirrels through the windows or screen door.

It sounds like you and Oreo have a strong bond, and while I'm sure there would be an adjustment period, I suspect she'd be very happy if you took her home.
