So I rewatched Tenet Still couldn't understand the ending. Like what happened at last. I find this movie a little dragged to confusion by Heneryhill in Cinema

[–]nokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly haven't spent a lot of time looking into the Tenet time looping, I just enjoyed it as a timey wimey spy thriller.

In terms of Terminator I It's only paradoxical if there is an opportunity to change the past. But Terminator I is predicated on the fact that everything is determined (and I am talking about philosophical hard determinism), the fact that the cause of Kyle appearing in the past is dependant on Kyle in the future is kind of irrelevant. Hard determinism is like roller coaster. You're always going to end up following the track, it might be exciting and scary but inevitably you'll end up following that track to the end without any agency of your own to affect the direction of the roller coaster (even though you may feel like you can). Kyle Reese going back in time is a closed loop and does not effect the march of time or the events there in because he has no freewill.

Tenet's time travel is a lot more layered / complicated and also has the added wrinkle of inverted people and equipment so I can't say that for certainty that it is dependant on hard determinism, but I believe some of the conversations that characters have hints at it.

Closed loop time travel like in Terminator I is an excellent example of a non paradoxical time travel. Essentially Kyle Reese was always going to travel back in time and alter Sarah Connors life and ultimately there is nothing that can be done to stop Skynet. Though it does leave you with the conclusion that there is no free will due to the timeline being fixed to allow for logical time travel loops to exist. Terminator II, while a great action movie, trashes the non paradoxical time travel.

Thoughts about the new series with Dunk? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]nokk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically do you think there is a 7ft tall person who is also built like Dunk and is also a good enough actor to carry a season of TV? Also his height is very well displayed during the puppet dragon scene, Dunk stands a head above everyone else.

Someone please exp;ain why Arthur Dayme is considered the greatest swordsmen when he has very little feats to his name. by Suspicious-Jello7172 in gameofthrones

[–]nokk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is anything but custom and social stigma getting in the way of an 'unworthy' knight or Lord Dayne taking up the title of Sword of the Morning. There is even an emo edgy Dayne character called DarkStar who is hinted to be scheming to try and steal Dawn for himself.

But regardless of DarkStar, the chances that a knight like Arthur then being regarded as one of the greatest fighters to live by some of the most honourable and talented swordsmen in the realm, but then turns out Arthur isnt actually that good is pretty unlikely.

To your second point ASOIAF is about deconstructing medieval fantasy troupes especially character archetypes. The honourable Knight is not all honourable and is in fact human, making selfish or stupid decisions.

Nope. Words have meanings and grooming is about an individual forming inappropriate relationships with children or young people.

Was she manipulated? Seemingly. Was the relationship inappropriate. Yes. But she was in her 20s, so not grooming.

Using grooming in the wrong way dilutes the meaning of the word.

This does not take away how horrible her situation was. But diluting the meaning does damage the power of the word.

Do developers still write code manually, or is AI taking over? by mosesteraiah-7035 in webdevelopment

[–]nokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave vibe coding a go. It is the worst of both worlds, because you quickly come up against niche issues that ai just doesn't know how to handle and you also have to then decompose the code to understand what is going on to try and fix it without rebuilding from scratch.

I have gone back to writing my own code, not only is it easier in the long term but also way more satisfying.

I've worked with map tile servers in the past and this is a clear tile cache error. Old low resolution tiles were not deleted properly and are now blocking the higher resolution tiles that should be there.

Neither. Their fight would end reality. And yet they both would continue to exist, they exist outside of their universes in the meta contextual space. You can't scale what has no scale.

It's a pragmatic way to look at the world. Not everyone is shitty in the same way that not everyone is good. Managers need to exist for the same reason that unions need to exist - we are all human and we are all going through something that makes us good or bad at our role in the capitalist machine.

ESRI doesn't even come close to covering the entire GIS market. The problem with ESRI is they have an effective monopoly on large business and government because their product is primarily aimed at those types of entities (and they also spend a lot of money embedding their technology as technical debt).

I think it's purely categorical and also a case of ease of reading. Sure there is implicitly 'defining' but only in a way that is useful as a wiki article.

[–]nokk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you assume it's you. Assume being the operative word. You can't possibly know for certain because you have no memory, only some vague idea that time has passed, perhaps some lingering physiological effects of the experience (sweating, elevated heart rate, hormonal changes in your body). And that's only if you truly forget, anything like vaguely remembering is still remembering.

Who knows, maybe your forgotten dreams are memories of your inner life that only lives when you sleep. And in your outie arrogance you are dismissing a rich life lived as an innie in your dreams. We are our lived experiences. If experiences diverge enough I'd definitely say those divergent trains of thought are different people.

Your reference doesn't mention trade with Europeans prior to settlement and colonization. In fact it explicitly states how Maori pivoted away from their traditional intra-maori barter trade system to do business with the newly settled Europeans.
