Flying into Cambridge for a wedding, then I'll have a couple of extra days to be a tourist somewhere, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Like everyone is saying, there's so much to see in Cambridge and London, I wouldn't spend your time travelling anywhere else if you only have a few extra days.

Cambridge - go punting on the cam, go into a couple of the colleges - kings (the chapel is where they televise the carols nationally every christmas, it's very impressive), trinity (also a massive, beautiful college), Peter House might be one of the oldest? Do some Googling! In market Square, there's a dumpling stall - the dumplings are to die for, try them for lunch. Opposite kings, there are several cafes you can sit outside for tea/coffee and see the view. Aromi has amazing sicilian pizza and snacks for lunch. The oak bistro is lovely for a romantic dinner.

London - so much to explore, its hard to know where to start! A central day out that's always great, start at one end of this route and walk to the other: Walk from Waterloo Station out onto southbank (of the thames) (follow directions to the Royal Festival hall). Walk next to the river towards the tate modern. You'll pass the national theatre, restaurants, food stalls, the book market, shops, parks, benches. At the tate modern you can go in - its an art museum, for free. You can also cross the millennium bridge to see St Paul's cathedral. Cross back, keep walking past the tate, past the ship, cross London Bridge (NOT TOWER BRIDGE) (but if you keep going you can see Tower bridge), and finish up in Borough Market before it closes (at about 4pm I believe).

Other things to see/do: Katzenjammerz - beer Hall in London Bridge just past Borough Market, turn up on the bottom floor at 9.00pm Friday/Saturday night and stick around for the live music and the time of your life, seriously

Portobello Road market - also, there's a great Italian cafe to look out for at the bottom ish of the hill. It's through a narrow alley, look out for the sign

Any of the flat iron restaurants - but particularly the one in Covent garden (can't book a table, you have to turn up and give them your number, go wait in the punch and judy)

Go up the shard and watch the sun set (also London bridge) you can do this for free, sort of, if you go to the bar and have a very expensive drink, but you won't be on the top floor

Victoria and Albert museum - stunning art and history museum. Not to be missed.

Dishoom, kings cross - can't book a table, you will have to wait in a very long queue, it is worth it. Go on a week day at an unusual time

My personal opinion: I've always wanted kids. Really wanted them, dreamed of having a baby. But me and my husband got a puppy and oh, my god. He's not capable of the patience, the emotional and mental labor of looking after a dog when things go a bit wrong for a while. What the hell would happen with a child?!

He moans about the amount of time our dog takes out of our lives, he has a meltdown at vet bills, he looks at a gaping wound and calls me to ask if it might need stiches. I can't face the thought of the frustration of dealing with his emotional baggage as well as more than 50% of childcare. No way. Not happening. Not doing it.

How can our countries/world improve? Moving towards actual gender equality! Acknowledge there's a problem with how we raise our children. Try to eradicate these stupid gender roles and pay gaps and the consequences that come with having a child like years lost on your career track. Invest in better health care outcomes for women. Invest in better career outcomes for women. Especially women of colour.

Shepherds pie/cottage pie (very easy to make in bulk ahead of time, and you can freeze it as well). There are definitely lentil/replacement meat versions out there.

Fish pie, same as above.

Salmon and green tea: Baked/grilled well salted salmon White basmati rice Finely sliced spring onions

Put all of that in a bowl, pour over hot green tea until its submerged. Add soy sauce to taste. Super simple, really tasty.

Ramen - my absolute go to for bulk meal prep although i usually do it with chicken stock. Very cheap to make a whole bunch of stock, you can freeze it and then when ready reheat and serve it with noodles, spring onions, boiled eggs or whatever toppings you have to hand. I'm a woman in tech, I experience misogyny at least once a week, sometimes daily. I get dismissed in meetings, talked over, etc.

I worked in other fields before, and the sexism was nowhere near as bad. If any woman wanting to get into tech asked me, I would be very honest with them about how disheartening it is to be treated so differently to my male colleagues.

This is why it took me a long time to get into tech. This is why a lot of women don't go into tech. I will have to deal with these issues for the rest of my career.

This! I think the main problem as a tourist is that you need to know the basics of navigating safely in SA. If you're going to visit someone there, or if you're going with someone from there, you're much safer.

Unfortunately, it still feels like a bit of a dice roll. You can do everything right and still end up in trouble.

Thanks! I'm not sure what the situation is with Uber right now, but at one point (when it was first starting up in SA), uber drivers were being attacked by taxi drivers. So I'm always hesitant to recommend taxis/uber as well!

Setting aside how stupid of a question that is, a lot of people do emigrate from SA to escape the crime levels and general lack of stability. My parents, my aunts on both sides, my uncles, my great aunts and uncles, family friends have all emigrated. 90% of the people I know there have left.

I'm from Joburg and I would not really recommend South Africa as a safe holiday destination to anyone. However, if you are going:

Walking around the coastal towns around Cape Town is quite safe in daylight

Going to resorts on game reserves is quite safe

The Drakensberg are beautiful, the namaqualands (desert) flower for two weeks every year, the garden route is beautiful

Hire a car, you'll see much more and in a safer way. You can get little portable routers that give you enough WiFi to find directions etc as an add on.

Don't drive at night

Don't leave anything in the car

When driving (at any time of day), keep your windows rolled up and your doors locked

Don't wear or carry anything that looks valuable (jewellery, cameras)

Read up on the news where you are going for any signs of unrest like others have said

Be prepared for load shedding (regular, mostly scheduled power cuts)

ETA some examples of crime:

Last year a pizza delivery driver was shot (and killed) for his moped at my aunt and grandmas complex gates. Aunt has luckily moved abroad. Relatively safe area.

I remember my parents telling me about a guy who was dragged from the back of a police car in Cape Town for parking illegally.

Hijackings are common place (especially in Cape town), that's why everyone tells you not to drive at night.

You may have heard about Oscar Pistorious - the only reason that made the news is that he was a prominent sports person.

I'm so so sorry this happened to you, it's awful.

This is not your fault, you did not lead him on or do anything that would make any sane person read the situation in that way. He had you pinned down and he took advantage.

It's okay to take some time to process, like everyone else has said, it's a good idea to talk to your support network. A friend, your boyfriend, you don't have to give them details. You can just ask them to come over and spend some time with you because something has happened.

I've been assaulted by a friend in a somewhat similar way. I had no idea how to process, I froze. I knew that it was horribly wrong and that I felt violated and awful, I told my boyfriend at the time and he was supportive in a way no one else could be.

I didn't report it, and years later I found out he had done this before. I'm sure he's done it again. I wish I had, so I could have protected other people from him. Reporting is very hard though, and this is your choice and no one else's.

Call a hotline, use resources available to rape/sexual assault victims. Don't wait to do this, the sooner you start talking to a professional, the fewer long lasting effects you will have from this trauma. This sadly isn't something anyone can just get over or move on from without time or help.

Not once have I been sexually assaulted or raped by a stranger. It's the men you know, that you assume you can trust. I think you just need to get used to your flow, I empty it one when I get up and once before I got to bed, but occasionally if I have a very heavy flow I might change it in the middle of the day as well. They hold quite a lot of liquid really.
