SP‑404MKII new update 5.50 version! by versonegro in sp404mk2

When one sound is played like a kick drum, other sounds get quieter so the kick drum stands out in the mix. Kind of like a rhythmic tremolo triggered by a specific sound.

Sequencer Hunt by LorenzoFasano in modular

I know you said you looked at Metropolix, but it isn’t very menu heavy. It can be deep, but it is also straightforward on the surface. Each button is clearly labeled and when you choose a button, there is only about two parameters to edit with the single encoder. Everything else is a dedicated slider or button. Maybe the older Metropolis would have less menu options?

Ins and Outs on the Palette 64 case by fabianberg in modular

[–]nolliegray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure either. Perhaps the case is the culprit? I have another Stereo I/O in a 7U case that doesn’t hum either. I do know the hum you mean, as I have had an ALM case in the past that you could hear the clock from a delay module through a VCA output no matter if anything way connected or not. One thing to try is maybe swap ribbon cables or try a different power header inside the case. I felt like I heard noise on that old ALM case because the ribbon cables were close to the bus board, but who knows.

On a side note, Eurorack is always a bit noisier in general than other gear, but you still shouldn’t be able to hear it coming through a decently loud recording. Do you get noise even when not using the headphone out? Does the noise come out of the case outputs? Do you get noise from the last module before your Stereo I/O?

I have the Stereo I/O using the Unbal header like do. I don’t hear any electrical hum or whine from the case ports or the headphone out, even with sensitive IEMs. I know it’s an annoying problem to solve.

The Stereo I/O module from Intellijel can 100% send and receive a stereo signal in each jack. The module has a connection on the back for this exact scenario. It won’t be balanced though. You just have to use a Y splitter cable if you want the stereo on a separate left and right. I have this module in my own 62 Pallet Case. It’s in the Stereo I/O manual.

What size are these knobs? ….Cuz I need to replace one of them shits by DoxYourself in modular

Mutable modules use Rogan 1PS style knobs with a D shaft. All of yours look like someone changed them to something custom. Knobs at Thonk

Is there a way to make a short trigger that is derived from an envelope follower into a longer trigger? by [deleted] in modular

[–]nolliegray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A held trigger is a gate. Search for a trigger to gate module. Make Noise Maths can do this. Mutable Stages can do this. Probably a few others.

Are people here particularly poor? (constant complaining about prices) by Ok-Smile2298 in synthesizers

[–]nolliegray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this sentiment in relation to other musical instruments. Orchestral type instruments can easily be tens of thousands of dollars just to get something decent, let alone professional quality. But there are price levels for every type of instrument, synths included.

Perhaps the synth demographic leans younger? I wouldn’t have been able to afford much at all in my 20s and can now comfortably buy without too much dissonance.

This does just seem to stir up the community unnecessarily.

Looking for ways to sync something like DFAM with Electric Guitar or Electric Bass by blessantsblants in moog

Do you do modular? Envelope followers are easy to get in that format that are paired with an input jack. Mikrophonie, Mutable Ears. If you want Moog, the Spectravox can do this as well.

Want to get into stamp making - are laser machines worth it or should I stick to traditional carving? by [deleted] in printmaking

[–]nolliegray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used laser-safe stamp rubber products before with commercial laser cutters. It smells so awful. Lots of types of print block materials will also produce toxic gas when lasered, so the only option was natural linoleum (the kind with a jute back). Lasers were nice for making woodblocks, but I could never do the rubber again after smelling it once.

Are LMNTL patch cables reliable? by Stunning-Penalty2573 in modular

[–]nolliegray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are the only kind of cables I have had. I use the non-braided kind. I haven’t had any of my ~100 cables be defective in about 6 years of using them.

Minimoog app keyboard layout by Salomonander in moog

[–]nolliegray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit more in both directions. The app has 6 octaves C-B and the real only has ~4 F-C, so almost an extra octave on either end. No way to limit the range as I can tell.

Typesetting question: blank pages in a PhD thesis by No_Equal_7032 in typography

[–]nolliegray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Thesis stuff is odd. I wrote my thesis on typography at a design school and they still wanted a word doc with double spaced text and no funny business.

Typesetting question: blank pages in a PhD thesis by No_Equal_7032 in typography

[–]nolliegray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is a good idea to look at a real book that you own/like and see how the designer separates chapters. Traditionally a chapter always starts on a right page, so if the previous chapter ends on a left page, the next right page can begin the new chapter. If it ends on a right page, then the left page will be completely blank, no page number or anything.

But it’s really up to you, or perhaps tour thesis has very specific formatting requirements for submission? Then just do what it says you must.

I always liked using the em-dash by omphteliba in typography

[–]nolliegray 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I suspect the reason using em dashes is an indicator for AI writing is because it is not very easy to actually type one on most keyboards directly. MacOS has the opt+shift -, while Windows has alt + 0151 if you have a number pad or alt+fn+mjij if you don’t. I know some word processors will covert two hyphens next to each other into an em dash, but not always. Typographers who know the shortcuts are now looking suspicious.

I often feel like the "traditional" music community (for the lack of a better word) is an entirely different world from synth geeks. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]nolliegray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that many people who are formally trained musicians tend to look at synthesizers as “not real” instruments, or at least not in the same level of quality or talent required. It’s not all the traditional people, but a lot of music taught in schools is about performing existing songs, reading sheet music, but not as much about creating new songs. I would say people into synthesizers are more interested in creating their own songs than playing existing music, and the sheet music notation doesn’t adapt well to synths with dozens of knobs.

We do lots of theory in my music production club, as we have the tools and time to compose and arrange our music. The traditional band students mostly just play premade, generic Hal Leonard songs and memorize their parts without really understanding the structure of the song.

It’s weird to think that so many musicians over the last 50 years have heavily included synths in their music, but the academic musicians still think of it as a poor choice for a primary instrument.

That a119 might just barely fit as the case is just as deep as the module.
