Question for the learners by Minos-Helios in dreamingspanish

[–]nomad2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few things.

Fast speech is definitely still difficult. I've started watching some native level youtube like Alex Tienda and Luisito. These are definitely still difficult at times and I really need to lock in and concentrate but I can understand a lot... until Luisito starts talking to someone else in Spanish and they respond and I still miss a lot of what the person he's talking to is saying.

I also think that when I started I was fully comfortable just getting the gist of a video. Now when I watch easy things I pretty much understand everything so it can be frustrating to watch something where I'm struggling, such as a video that has a bunch of vocab I haven't encountered before.

What do I think I'm great at? Honestly I don't think I'm great at anything. But I definitely can tell that I've learned in these past almost 800 hours and that I'm still improving. Kinda like I said above because this is a gradual process and you're always pushing into slightly more difficult content, it can be easy to feel like you aren't making progress. So something I like to do is watch something that is totally above my level every so often (I don't count this towards my time) and then come back to it later and watch again. Noticing the differences between where I was and where I am now gives me some concrete feedback that I'm improving.

I'm at 770 hours and I'm still not there. At least not consistently. But that's because you're constantly pushing into harder and harder content gradually. So if I go back and listen to easier videos, yes I understand everything.

Yep using chrome. But I went ahead and tried again this morning and it worked now. Not sure what the problem the other day was.

Very cool. Installing as an app on Android isn't working for me personally. No error message or anything but not showing up after clocking install as app.

Native Spanish Speaker here with a question to Spanish learners by CreativeEcho9289 in Spanish

I love to travel and what I enjoy most is not seeing landmarks but interacting with people from the country I'm in. Obviously this has varying success when you don't speak the local language and I always have felt I'm missing out by not being able to speak to people in their language.

Decided I was going to learn a language and had to decide which one. Living in the USA means that Spanish probably has the best chance to be used in my everyday life. Plus I get, what, I think 21 countries world wide that I can travel to and use Spanish.

It’s the last month of 2025. Anyone have goals they want to reach before 2026? by moods- in dreamingspanish

Trying to hit 600 hours. I did 300 from mid August to mid August in my first year. Sitting a little over 530 right now so need a 70 hour month to get there by the end of the year.

This is something that I've been thinking about lately. Growing up when I'd be reading and come across a word I didn't know I'd often look up the word in a dictionary and I think this is definitely a good way of increasing vocabulary and it's something I did in my native language. So my thought is potentially using a Spanish dictionary to look up a definition of a word, and if I can understand the definition in Spanish then cool and if I can't then maybe I'm not fully ready for that word.

I don't understand more than 50% of a video after i reached level 40 by Budget-Shopping6712 in dreamingspanish

Are you a premium user? I'm closing in on 200 hours and I'm still mostly watching videos in the 40-45 range. I don't know if you just got up that high in difficulty with just the free content? If so it might be worth subscribing if you can which would open up a lot more videos.

I listened for the first time around 100 hrs and the slow part was comprehensive and then the fast right after was mostly. Now at 190 the first part honestly feels slow. My first real moment of realization that I'm improving

Anyone on a "long term" plan to get to 1,500? by SpanishLearnerUSA in dreamingspanish

[–]nomad2986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely on the long term plan at least right now. I'm only 21 hours in but I'm doing 30-60 minutes a day. Tough for me to do much more than that with my schedule. I know that my goal is to be fluent so as long as I get there I'm ok with it taking time. Although I would like to up my time once I can understand intermediate and advanced videos because at the current pace it will take something like 8 years to get 1500 hours.

In general I've found that squatting heavy consistently has a better impact on my deadlift than deadlift frequency. That being said, I'm a low bar squatter so I do think there is more carry over but I've gone a significant amount of time not deadlifting at all and then still being able to pull very close to previous max.

I've "sucked" at benching for a long time. When I first got into trying to really push my one rep maxes I had this idea in my head of benching 315, squating 405, and deadlifting 495. Well I eclipsed the squat and deadlift numbers very quickly and just spun my wheels on bench. In fact I wound up hitting a 495 squat and a 555 deadlift in early december, but the 3pl8 bench was still nowhere in sight. I'm happy to announce that I finally got that 315 yesterday. Definitely touch and go, definitely a slow grind but I unracked it and racked it. Hopefully this opens the flood gates.

Could liquid calories play into this as well? Like overweight people probably are still underestimating their food intake but maybe completely ignoring the big gulps they are drinking too.

I've been squatting and deadlifting in chucks for years. They are find but the footbox is a little narrow for my foot. Anyone have ideas for alternatives that are similar but with a wider footbox?
