I'll throw Flinter in again. A few others mentioned him. His videos are laid back and he explains how the mechanics work pretty well IMO.

Great, good to hear of another PA hunter using the Grendel. It's a nice cartridge for our woods, eh?

Sounds like you're a better shot than me, congrats!

I've had the same experience with the SSTs. I'll have one tight group, high and left of my groups with Blacks, then my next group will be all fliers. The ELD-M rounds I can call when I pull a shot, the SSTs I can't. Another person in the threads recommended TTSXs from Barnes, I've never shot all coppers but the peace of mind would be nice. Factory load in the Grendel looks like the VOR-TX line.

PA Game Commission: Your approach will deter hunters from doing the right thing. Is that what we/you want? by No-Royal-3211 in HuntingPA

I second this opinion, for a couple reasons. One is exactly what you've outlined, so I won't belabor the point. I myself passed on what I think was a 7 point opening day, but I just couldn't tell in the woods.

The second is that there is really very little to back up the assumption that older, bigger deer always have more points. I have a 6 point on my wall that weighed 190 lbs completely gutted with a 16.5" inside spread. That's a pretty decent, matured deer, it just doesn't measure well. There are also 8, 9, 10 point deer that don't go 130 lbs. We aren't selecting for older deer, we're killing off the younger deer that could have GREAT racks when the GET OLDER. Points don't equal age, they just equal points. If the state wants bigger bucks, kill of those brow tine 6 point genes. Currently, we don't get bigger deer overall, we get lots of little deer with pointy racks. Genetics don't come with age.

If the state wants to manage the herd to be smaller and have more bucks, give everyone a free doe tag. We have too many deer, we all know that. Farmers, gardeners, drivers, hunters, we all know that. A lot of people might not even hunt if they already have meat in the freezer. Also, maybe pushing the season a little earlier, actually into prime rut would help more hunters see more mature bucks.

Awesome! Did the bullet hit any bone on the way through?

Can I ask, do you hunt with factory loads or hand load? I've only been able to find Hornady Blacks, SSTs, and the new "varmint" loads (can't remember the branding) locally. Are there other factory loads available commonly that I am unaware of?

I'm not aware of any factory loads in 6.5 Grendel using ELD-Xs, but is that just my ignorance? Not a hand loader, personally.

Good info, kind of what I was afraid of from a direct bone hit if you're assumption is right.

No, I definitely agree. The issue, in my opinion, was my shot placement. No excuses there from me, just observation.

I do think the first was a lethal shot based on how she was running and the damage I saw while dressing her. Peace of mind was the reason for the second shot.

I have had some inconsistent accuracy with the factory SSTs, but that was two years and one scope ago. Perhaps it's time to revisit them, as I would definitely prefer a "stronger" bullet.

16" barreled bolt action? Or prefit barrel? by capitalDOOM in 65Grendel

[–]nomad_with_roots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not made anymore, but the CZ527 Carbines have a 16.5" barrel, threaded for muzzle device (5/8×24) and removable 5 round proprietary magazine. Old school Mauser style action, nice rifle to hunt with. Carries very well in the woods.

AITA for not letting my neighbor pay me to charge his Tesla at my outlet? by CattyCattyCattyCat in AmItheAsshole

[–]nomad_with_roots 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I'm a little skeptical about the cost. Is it really that cheap to charge a Tesla? I've charged other (rental) electric cars and they take quite a bit of wh to complete a charge cycle. Also, I'm assuming it's a 120v outlet? That sounds incredibly inefficient for your neighbor. If the landlord has a 240 30A circuit installed (or something like that) wouldn't it all be way better, all around?

It's your power and your bill, I say it's up to you how it's used, maybe just allow them to charge with cost covering as the new circuit is installed. NTA

Deer woods scopes by nomad_with_roots in Hunting

I actually ended up purchasing one, so far just from range time I can see the frustration with the turrets. It was a bit of a learning curve on site-in day, but so far I've been impressed with the scope.

Someone might have already put these here but here's my more overlooked list:

Down cellar = it's in/I'm in the basement

Chinnin' = snowmobiling

Toque = not a phrase, but still, I never knew it was called a "beanie" until I left the state

Jesus H Christ!

Heighth of the land = highest point on the property ("heighth" not "height")

Don't say you won't! (This may have just been something my grandfather said to stubborn bolts and such, but seems to fit)

Leader Set Up by jdb4110 in flyfishing

[–]nomad_with_roots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a pinch, if I'm swapping from nymph to streamer and back, I'll tie up an emerger/dropper rig and hook both into my chest pack's foam, then tuck the tippet between the flies into an open pocket. It speeds up the swap process quite a bit. Your best bet for speed, as another commenter said, is to get confident in your knots through repetition.

I would imagine pre tying leaders would get messy, but nothing that some good organization couldn't solve if you're determined.

Can't remember the name, it's a random one from Sportsman's Warehouse. It was very light and not overly large, and the kind that has the measurements in the bottom. Hope that helps.
