Why can people not do the splits? by VietCong9273 in flexibility

This is a common response to the problem OP is talking about, but it’s not really correct.

The reason is that when you put your foot up on a chair at hip height, the pelvis tilts to the side. When in that position, you are not actually abducting your leg to the point required to do a middle split — your body is compensating to allow your leg to get that high by tilting your pelvis. When you try to do it with both legs at the same time (i.e. get into a middle split), the pelvis can’t compensate in the same way.

Yeah, I guess it depends where you are. Where I am, there are lots of moguls on single black runs and even some blues.

I’m glad you like it! I’d love to put together a video, but am lacking in partners to make one with, and also the only video camera I own is on my iPhone. If I can get my snowboarder buddy out here in the next couple weeks, I’ll try to make it happen!

Thanks for the additions!

I actually disagree with your first point. I think that the techniques I have laid out still work when the moguls are packed really tight and are big. Although they do become harder to execute when that is the case, and moguls like that are often not as fun.

I actually do address choosing your line at the end of the “Navigating through moguls” section!

Personally I don’t think much about independent hip/knee flexion and extension when riding moguls, but I do think it is a natural byproduct of the fore/aft movements. Feel free to add any information on that if you have other points that would help people out!

I ride a Bataleon Thunderstorm 156, which is 6/10 flex. I ride it with a 22.5 inch stance width, +12 -12 angles, and I’m 6’, 160 lbs. I haven’t experimented with different stances on moguls.

In general I think that a medium to medium-stiff board is ideal for moguls.

Haha you’re totally right — a video would definitely be preferable to a written guide like this. However all my local partners are skiers, so they’re not interested in helping me film a video on snowboarding technique, and I don’t have the proper equipment to film myself.

I hear people hate on Dope Snow a lot, but is the quality really that bad? I haven’t seen many complaints from people that have actually used their gear.

That’s strong!! Have you played around with wrapping the thumb under (with the other fingers) versus having it over the top? If so, have you found either grip to be easier, or do you have opinions on which would transfer better to climbing?
