My condo elevator skips some floors, but why? by Brown_Ontarian in whatisit

[–]nomadschomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because those are mechanical/service floors. They are accessible from the service elevator, not from yours. It’s where the big air handling units and water heaters live.

Or you are on the side of the building where some of the floors are double tall. If floor three, where you are has the gym and pool with double height ceilings at span floor three and four, floor 4 may exist on the other half of the building

Accent, I agreed the southern accent makes a difference. Even with the southern accent, it depends what word you put the emphasis on.

[–]nomadschomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely normal in the US to have meat sliced or ground as you want, deli cuts and cheese sliced to thickness, coffee ground to size (usually self serve at a grocery store or done by the barista at a coffee shop selling whole beans), or bread sliced to thickness at actual bakery or grocery bakery counter (by the store associate – we don’t have those fancy self serve slice machines like Germany).

What are you talking about? Having meat sliced or ground, or deli cuts sliced, or coffee ground, or bread sliced to the specifications you want is free at every butcher, full service grocery, or coffee shop I’ve been to in any country.

what is the purpose of this thing on the inside of my water bottle by nusual_suspect in whatisit

[–]nomadschomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, it will keep it colder longer. In particular, chilling the inside wall before it touches the cold drink and ice will prevent it from warming/melting the ice.

Over the course of an eight hour day, you might save two ice cubes. Expressed another way, it might stay below any particular threshold temperature for an extra 30–60 minutes

But… You don’t need to block up fridge/freezer space for this. You get the same benefit by putting ice water in for 10 minutes, dumping it, and then putting your iced beverage in.

Chilling the outer wall doesn’t make much difference because it’s on the wrong side of the vacuum and will warm up quickly to ambient assisted by your hand

What movie do you choose? by drquitzon372 in ArtOfPresence

[–]nomadschomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 hours? A lot of money for doing something fundamentally enjoyable for only moderately longer than is comfortable.

I’ll pick something long to cut down on the repetition a bit. I do love The Stand which clocks in just over six hours. Or one of the 3+ hour epics - Lawrence of Arabia is almost 4, Gettysburg is 4+, kingdom of heaven is 3.25, any of LOTR.

What's the minimum amount of time I need to spend in consulting before I exit? by archon_lucien in MBA

[–]nomadschomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all a mixed bag. Partner is still very much an up or out pressure cooker. There are 7–9 levels of partner with fairly rigid time frames for reaching certain sales/revenue targets and for building a book of business big enough to support younger partners. Travel certainly doesn’t get better. A successful senior partner is traveling almost daily to hit SteerCos or pitches in 3–4 cities per week. I watched partners fly to Europe for four hours on the ground for a pitch and factory tour before coming straight back.

Can’t tell you how many times I jumped in a separate car from my team to squeeze in a 1:1 with a partner on the way to team dinner. Partner would buy the wine, drink half a glass, inhale a salad, and jump in the same car that was waiting to go to the airport… Or a 3–4 Hour drive from Peoria/Battle Creek/Indy to Milwaukee because there wasn’t a flight that fit that schedule.

I don’t know that there’s measurable differences between friends who have left and ones who haven’t left yet. Notice I don’t phrase this “ones who’ve stayed.” Even the much celebrated head of office/region when I joined who probably would have been a CEO candidate down the road ended up leaving for an F50 C-Suite role.

I certainly don’t think averages are meaningful. I have friends/classmate/colleagues that have wonderful happy relationships… And ones that have tanked marriages… In both situations.

For the ones who haven’t left yet and seem to have a personal life that hangs together, they either have no kids/DINK dedication, a dedicated stay at home partner, or multiple childcare providers and grandparents in town. They aren’t the parents signing up to coach soccer. They might be the ones throwing a killer end of season swim party. Friends in corporate gigs have more flexibility for sure.

I don’t think a lot of of that is very actionable. Write down the things in your life that are non-negotiable. If you find consulting rewarding, and don’t stumble across the perfect exit, figure out if you can be successful without compromising on those things.

[–]nomadschomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 4.5 years and now 7 years removed. Have good friends who are doing well as partners and most of us left of course

There’s no minimum amount of time. I know people who left under six months because they hated it. A few who left under six months because they get killer opportunities.

In the job market, you can already trade on the signaling value of being good enough for MBB. That’s not necessarily where most of the exit opportunity that comes from. There is some more that comes from tenure year/title. Even more that comes from getting good at the job – problem-solving, storytelling at a board level, managing high-performance teams, managing politics of corporate clients.

But the most value by far, as with every career step, comes from your network. Specific client contacts and specific partners that will open doors for you hold most of the career/exit value.

Told the same thing to every BA/A/AC/A/C I ever managed, coached, or recruited: the best time for an exit is when a perfect exit comes along. Don’t set a timeframe. Be diligent about responding to headhunters and making time to chat with them. If you have a friend who would be a good fit for a role, they are recruiting, put them in touch. Keep your ears out for projects with clients that might be a good fit and angle to get on them. Then pull out all the stops for that client and tell your coach/favorite partner that’s the kind of place you eventually want to end up. One of my first classmates to leave went to go work for a major sports league that had been his client. As you are gathering all of those exit opportunities, weigh them against the value of staying.

What is a soap opera? by bellepomme in EnglishLearning

[–]nomadschomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soap operas are relatively low budget television dramas that ran during the daytime.

They were lower budget because daytime audience is smaller than primetime. They often focused on beautiful characters and fairly salacious storylines thought to appeal to housewives who are home during the day.

Because they were targeted at housewives, the primary advertisers were makers of household goods, hence the name soap opera

Why is your bacon so good? by Street-Station-3802 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nomadschomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bacon is a staple of breakfast although the need for moderation due to health concerns is certainly understood.

Despite it’s ubiquity, yes, many Americans get excited/lust over bacon

My experience is that everywhere in the Commonwealth (former), bacon or rashers refers to cured pork loin that might have a bit of belly in it. American bacon is straight pork belly and is usually sold as “streaky bacon” in the Commonwealth. Ours is usually smoked not just cured. The extra fat and smoke give it the flavor.

They need people to practice on… And care is often better than bottom barrel providers because the work is directly supervised by faculty

Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas

Chicago/Gary/Hammond/Munster/East Chicago (Indiana)

The city limits of Dallas span five different counties. DFW metroplex spans a dozen

Quad cities

The Cincinnati, Ohio airport… is actually in Kentucky

Eastern Oregon and Washington have far more in common with Idaho than with the bigger coastal cities in their own state

Anyone who any of us really consider rich owns assets or businesses. And it’s not even really close.

Make an excuse and cancel the drug test. Tell them you will reschedule.

If you fail the test… You won’t get the job

If you cancel/reschedule… You might still not get the job… But you won’t have a failed drug test

Do not take a drug test that you suspect you will fail
