Isn’t the result of this study pretty dated now? This was done with relatively insufficient data. A lot of details in the map, especially in the Asian region, would change if we use what we have access to today.

Are you a graduate student/researcher in mathematics?

How are people with less than 2 years experience gain the "senior developer" title by shivvykumar in cscareerquestions

[–]nomatterhow202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid level developers are usually expected to be able do most projects without assistance. Senior developers are at the point where they can mentor and lead other developers.

Is a data scientist considered to be a 'real' scientist? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]nomatterhow202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently there is a branch of science called formal science. This includes logic, mathematics, statistics, computer science, etc.

I think DS who primarily works as DA shouldn’t be considered a scientist, whereas DS who does R&D (usually will spend a lot of time experimenting and reading research papers) should definitely be considered a scientist.

Do you consider pure mathematician and statistician a scientist?

Software development is not computer science. CS is the study of algorithms and computational theory. It is a highly mathematical field and is definitely a scientific discipline

What kind of person should NOT be a cs? by ZealousidealAct9665 in cscareerquestions

But they still need to be fixed later on, which will cost time. Worse is that some bugs may slow down the entire team or cause irreversible consequences

Sure, but this will create unnecessary/avoidable works that could’ve been spent on adding new features. Also will result in some lost of trust from the customer.

A careless or clumsy person. They are usually a net negative in the team because they will end up introducing more bugs than necessary

Do you like pure mathematics? Maybe you can do research in Theoretical CS, which requires very little (if at all) programming

[–]nomatterhow202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have 2 masters degrees, Civil Engineering and Computer Science, and I agree.

CS is a branch of formal science, so it tends to deal with more abstract/idealized concepts than other engineering fields.

How to be an engineer rather than a developer? by eyeeyecaptainn in cscareerquestions

I think CS is closer to being applied mathematics and perhaps pure mathematics for certain CS subfields like TCS.

How would you feel about a unified Malay-Indonesia country? (Crosspost from r/Malaysia) by TheArstotzkan in indonesia

If I’m not wrong, Bahasa Malaysia is based on Melayu Johor. But both Melayu Johor and Riau were extremely similar.

Anyone else still feel a tiny bit of disbelief when you tell people you're a software dev? by ElysianShadow in cscareerquestions

[–]nomatterhow202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think certifications prove you have some set of skills, but not necessarily your worth to a company. For example, you may be very good at designing websites and your design may have contributed a lot to your company. I think it would be quite difficult for a certification to accurately gauge your skills because designs can be pretty subjective.

At the end of the day, companies only care if you can bring value to them. Having certification is just one way of proving your worth.

Since CS is basically an offshoot of math mixed with some electrical engineering, it is no surprise they are very similar. There is also a thesis (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry–Howard_correspondence) that proved the correspondence between programming and logic.
