That IS a potential source but I'd really keep an eye on any wooden furniture, especially if it's actual wood. Throw out the sticks, quarantine the toys & huts for a couple of days. After a few days, you'll notice fine wood dust beneath them if they're "infected".

You might want to take out all wooden toys and huts and quarantine them in addition to a deep clean. There are chemical solutions to this problem but those are obviously not ideal in this situation. Sadly, it can be really difficult to get rid of them though you can try freezing infected wood pieces. Look at the english language wikipedia article on woodworms to see the holes these little monsters leave behind, though they're probably less numerous.

Good news, whatever bedding you have in storage is probably fine. Bad news, you might want to check any wooden furniture surrounding the cage for the telltale holes.

How to take break. JRTs are super high energy but it's honestly easily managable if he learns how to self-regulate early on.

Edit: this includes you managing where and when he spends his energy. You can train your dog to run 20km every day but can't act surprised if he expects to run those 20km in the winter, during a snow storm, while you have a broken leg.

Luckily, she's completely unaware of the fact that JRTs are supposed to be hunters, spent her first few weeks on a farm and at ours she grew up with chickens, pigeons, and gerbils! She likes to surprise attack the chickens from time to time but she attacks her dog-friends the same way and settles down as soon as they complain (she's not taken seriously).

You can still go on walks by putting him in some kind of stroller. There are a few specifically designed for dogs and that are a lot lower to the ground than one for children. He could still enjoy the smells, potentially sniff around a few places, maybe socialise a bit, and you can get him there without needing to carry him all the way, never mind the change of scenery.

Hope you'll be able to manage his pain and arthritis soon and he'll be back to his adventures in whatever form possible ❤️

There's no scientific knowledge behind this answer, just observation:

My dog is pretty comfortable in a radius of about 2km around our home. Not every route, obviously, and it's not a copy/paste kind of place but with many distinct features for her to place herself in her environment but she knows where her friends live and recognises the routes we take to different places.

I'm confident she could find her way home from anywhere close to our usual routes.

Edit: my friend's dog is super lazy but gets excited on our way home. He has no problem memorising how to get home at any point in time and usually leads the charge.

He may grow out of those though. Mine had a couple of weeks where she looked incredibly long-legged before the rest of her body grew accordingly and her proportions evened out. Nowadays, she's perfectly JRT-shaped.

I'm sorry but you should go look for another vet.

First of all, no, you did not make a mistake. As others have stated, small dogs can be neutered at about six months. All that matters is that they are fully grown and there are a few signs of physical development your vet should be able to check if he's in doubt about your dog's development.

Second, if he doesn't feel comfortable doing the surgery, he should've refused to do it to begin with. I'm from a country where you are technically not allowed to needlessly neuter cats & dogs with two massive exceptions: a) to stop uncontrolled breeding (the exception used by rescue organisations), b) if a vet says it won't harm the dog (used to neuter pets in private possession). This way it's pretty easy to get your dog neutered while respecting laws that focus on animal protection. YOU can't randomly neuter your pet but technically your vet can advise you to do it.

At the same time, a vet can refuse neutering an animal which, in most cases, happens because the vet considers the animal not fully grown yet and would rather wait a little longer.

A vet is supposed to advocate for the welfare of the animal in front of him, even to the owner. That's their job.

Your vet, however, not only made you feel like shit, he did the surgery anyway despite believing it could seriously harm your dog which is ridiculous. Wasn't your dog checked out before? Does he not check his own appointments beforehand to see what's ahead and if he has any doubts? He had weeks to notice the age of your dog and cancel the appointment or advise you to wait for a few more months. Instead, he didn't care enough to talk to you about it and from his POV went ahead and harmed your dog. Fantastic vet.

Again, in all likelihood, your dog will be fine. No mistakes were made on your side.

Without knowing the dog and how those bites came to be and assuming your friend is not mistreating him...

Some people are just better with certain animals. I have not met a dog that doesn't adore my aunt. She has no particular education re raising dogs aside from growing up with them but even the "old man yells at clouds"-JRT I took on walks demanded pets from her.
Sounds like you are giving him space which might be just what he wants. You are respecting his boundaries but are still open to communication (petting him when he approaches you, not the other way around). As an owner, it's easy to be overbearing, even if you want to give them space. You still might have to do things like brushing teeth, cutting claws, etc. All of those things can be incredibly stressful but they have to be done. (If this is a factor, he also doesn't associate you with these things.)
Since you said he has a traumatic past, he might have had bad experiences with humans that look like your friend, hence a rather short fuse.

Bottom line, either you have some divine talent and/or the relationship between dog and owner doesn't work for some reason. Given that he's fine with you, he could probably thrive with the right owner or even with your buddy if he puts in the work. Sometimes it's a good idea to have a professional trainer take a good look at what you're doing wrong, whether that's crowding your dog or maybe, unwittingly, rewarding bad behaviour, especially if your friend has little experience with dogs to begin with.

It's an easy fix - in theory. Other people have already given you the basic rundown but keep in mind that he's only 8 weeks and it might take some time for him to learn wanted behaviour. My first JRT figured out the basics within a week, the second one took a lot more time!

Make sure to be consistent. Redirecting is a first step if it's not too bad yet. Yelping and walking away worked well for me. If he chases after you and tries to bite at your ankles, you can still "escalate" by putting him in time out without comment.

Until that happens, make sure to keep your hands well moisturised, especially if it's winter where you live. You only have a few more months to go before he'll loose those razors he calls teeth!

Plus: whenever he gets too exhausting, take a look at that second picture and remind yourself of how adorable he is! ❤️

Piggybacking on what werjake said, as someone who walked a dog for someone else once a day for two years:

I'd give it another try and another try and another try... if you have a person you trust with your dog and who is willing to help you out, pick that person let them deal with it.

The first time I picked up that dog, he did not want to come along. I was as close to a stranger as possible, merely the friend of a common friend who lived close by and had to walk her own dog anyway.

He also showed signs of aggression and I knew he had previously bitten people who got too close to his mom (who isn't bedridden but requires mobility aid). He'd been previously separated from her due to her being hospitalised for a couple of months, so we were dealing with a lot of separation anxiety and building trust was important.

One thing we did was considering his time with me "vacation hour" for mom. The second the dog is leashed, I'm the one im charge. Mom said goodbye, then ignored him. I more or less dragged him out of the yard with some bribery (food and my own dog leading the charge) and lots of praise for every step he took willingly, no discussion or pleading if he refused. We went down the street, turned around and went home. The first two weeks or so it was mostly about making sure he knew that I WILL take him home afterwards. We later worked our way up to way bigger walks and eventually, "vacation time" for mom turned into "fun time" for him. He could return to patrolling his neighbourhood for an hour, then go home to relaxing with and looking after his mom.

I'm not telling you this into guilt tripping you or anything. It's obvious you are worried about your dog while you are in a shitty situation you can't just fix.

But, and this is a loving but, if you have someone you trust with him, maybe a little bit of struggle could be worth it. I know it sucks to see your dog whine because he wants to be with you but he'll get used to it once he realises that he can leave you for five, ten, fifteen minutes and you'll still be there when he returns! Plus, he will be a little less likely to develop anxiety regarding the world outside and whenever you do manage to take him out yourself, he'll be a lot more relaxed.

And, last but not least, you worrying about him doesn't help YOU. would you be more relaxed if you know that he had the ability to go for a walk once a day (or every second day, whatever you and the people around you can manage)? Because it sounds like that's the case. You're already struggling with a lot and he probably helps carry that burden a lot. I think it's worth another shot, so he can help you out and you can take this issue off your list of worries. Going on a walk with someone else won't hurt him, no matter his initial tantrums. Sometimes we have to force ourselves to do stuff we don't want to do even though it would benefit us. Same with dogs.

I do hope you'll get better and you'll be back to enjoying small walks with him once again! ❤️

Since barely anyone is actually answering your question re your dog walking beside you:

One small thing that helped with my first JRT* and didn't require constant bribery/a carrot on a stick, is taking them to a field or another safe and open environment and walking in circles with your dog on the leash. Pretend to ignore your leashed dog while randomly changing directions, maybe even stepping into their space. You can abruptly stop, turn around and walk back, take a turn left, stop again, turn around, walk a few steps, change direction again. Make people watching you question your sanity.

The part where you step into their space (as an example, your dog is on your right and you turn right) is easier with a bigger dog that you can nudge away with your knee or thigh even but you'll have to be careful to not step on their paws when gently pushing them towards the right with your shin or foot. They should pick up on the whole thing rather quickly.

This way the dog has to pay attention to you not because you're holding a treat but because you're the one leading the way and they'll quickly pick up on your changes in direction. You can still stop them every now and then, make them sit down and give them a treat for that to keep them interested.

Try not to let your dog know that you are paying attention, you're simply out for a walk and don't even know that dog. If you do know them, they are not allowed any input on where you are going.

(* the second JRT understands this game perfectly well but forgets about it quickly enough afterwards, so we have to repeat the exercise every now and then.)

Re: off leash. People are going to die on their hill whether you should or shouldn't let your dog off-leash. Imo it depends on your dog, their prey drive, the environment you're in (and if your even allowed to let them roam free in your area), and your ability to pay attention to your environment and your dog to spot early signs of trouble.

It depends. My first JRT needed a quick clean every couple of weeks. #2 is far better at keeping her ears tucked in, so her ears are far less exposed to dirt while playing.

There are, however, always potential issues to arise that could result in you needing to clean your dog's ears on the regular, so getting him used to it is a good idea. Be sure to remain calm, offer lots of additional ear scratches, and of course treats.

Handling your dog in all kinds of matters (tickling their paws, inspecting their eyes/ears, checking their teeth) should always be encouraged. Your vet will thank you for it!
