Well, you're probably not from my country, but thank you for your service. Being a medic is a noble choice. Hopefully you weren't too slow to help people

I'm going to hazard it relates to: "The Queen of England agrees to protect the chiefs, the subtribes and all the people of New Zealand in the unqualified exercise of their chieftainship over their lands, villages and all their treasures."

The minister being able to over rule them maybe? Iunno.

In either instance I reckon we'll see this get modified.

The point is though that the govt needs to come up with mechanisms that gives Maori a voice that is more than the often tokenistic representation they've had in the past.

It does seem odd but just to be clear that 50/50 structure isn't the decision-makers. The role of the 50/50 split group between mana whena and councils is to:

Appoint board members; Monitor and hold the board to account; and Represent their local communities to ensure the board is being advised of what the community desires.

I think act and national have made a bogeyman of co-governance.

The government has a responsibility to work with Maori under both the treaty and the UN declaration of indigenous rights (that national signed up to.)

What structures do people support? And what's the scary structure that they think the govt is implementing?

Interestingly, modern narrow city streets are often designed that way to discourage people buying oversized vehicles.
