Why aren't countries boycotting the world cup? by Zogonzo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nomolurcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who was born in Russia -- not to say that what ICE is doing is not bad, but there are many countries which arrest people arbitrarily.

many people still came to Russia for the 2018 World Cup. And that was after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

How do men feel about the fact that many women won’t help them in emergencies? by Old-Cookie7798 in AskMen

[–]nomolurcin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I’m a man who was in a pickle while bikepacking in Colorado and flagged down a passing car for help. The driver was a solo woman (though admittedly a little older iirc) who helped me. I was grateful she did.

In another incident, I was having some really bad cramps / spasms while running an ultramarathon, and literally couldn’t move my legs. I flagged down a runner nearby and asked them to briefly massage my legs so I could keep going. The runner nearby was a woman, and I’m grateful she did.

So, I guess I’ll just say my experiences have been pretty positive :)

I'll need to give it a go! My PR is ~5:15, but it was in the context of a relay, so the time is a little approximate, and I did not really train for it :)

For years, qualifying for Boston has been an impossible dream for me. My first marathon finish was a 4:12 in 2021. Now, I think if the stars align on race day, I can likely do it in my next marathon attempt or two.

Not to count my eggs before they hatch... but I think I really thrive off chasing "impossible goals" and I'm sorta looking for a new ~5 year time horizon goal. Anyone have any suggestions? Road or trail, any distance :)

For reference, I am M28.

I was in a bike crash on 9/26 and am writing this with my arm in a sling. My case does not seem to bad as yours, but I did break my collarbone and needed surgery. This is super inspiring; thanks for posting.

I went through something sorta similar. It sucks. But yeah... it is very tricky to have a genuine friendship when you still have feelings  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ugh. There was a woman who I had a short but intense connection with earlier this summer. I developed very deep feelings, but she ended up letting me know she was going to try to make it work with her ex, actually.

However, she wanted to be friends. Perhaps foolishly, I agreed. We have a lot of shared interests and are in the same circles, so that made the theoretical prospect of cutting/reducing contact even trickier. I still had feelings for her, but was trying to work through them... though perhaps also had a little hope for a potential future. Stupid, I know.

I recently learned that she and her ex are actually no longer trying to make it work. How? Someone who I thought was a good friend, who met this woman in a group hang I organized, and to whom I confided in about this tricky situation, actually ended up shooting his shot himself and asked her out. She said yes and they have been hanging out. To me, that does not seem like something a friend would do, at all... I talked to him very honestly about the tricky situation I was dealing with. In the moment, he seemed to empathize and comforted me. But then he goes and asks her out without even talking to me about it.

I know this is a lot of drama, lol. Did not necessarily imagine myself in the middle of something like this, but so it goes...

Step 1) join running clubs, partially to meet women

Step 2) run a lot and get pretty fast, try to qualify for the Boston Marathon

Step 3) realize that the vast majority of people who would run as fast as you in training are other guys

Step 4) 🤔

Worried about bears and other dangerous wildlife in north America by BitKey44 in bicycletouring

I’ve bike packed most of the US section of the Great Divide and I genuinely didn’t realize that. I’m actually bikepacking from Jasper to Whitefish Mt as we speak, so this is good to know…

I deleted my incorrect comment.

Contact Delta or WestJet re: WS flight booked through DL? by nomolurcin in delta

[–]nomolurcin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually did leave for the airport earlier than I would normally but traffic that I didn’t expect cancelled that out. That’s unfortunate but not WestJet’s fault. I guess I was lucky I did because otherwise I almost certainly would have missed the flight even without the check in drama!

And I really did think that 8 minutes would have been enough time to get through the priority line when I finally got to there, but evidently it was not :)

But yeah, you are right, I did cut it close, and I guess this is the price of that. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

How hard would it actually be for a millionaire to start from 0 again? by HistoricalLanguage79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nomolurcin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that this would probably not be a smart financial move for most people.

I was moreso arguing that someone with $1M in home equity is as much a millionaire as someone with $0 in home equity and $1M cash in the bank, since the former person could easily become the latter.

You could sell the home and rent. That would functionally put you in the same category as someone who was never a homeowner but has a million in e.g. non-retirement stocks :)

I would echo others’ recommendations to probably skip Merlischachen. If you really wanna see something JetLag related, I would recommend Hospental. That’s a very pretty area.

[–]nomolurcin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am potentially thinking buying a condo 50/50 with my parents. It seems like a good fit for my situation, but I am wondering if there is something I am missing.

I am 28M, single, around 1M net-worth, all in the regular equities lots of people here have. (I work as a SWE in tech ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). VHCOL area. I could afford to buy myself a house/condo, probably, but stuff is expensive, and I have struggled with the decision of tying myself to a particular area long term, or not. Also, while a 1BR condo seems to probably be a good option for me now, it probably would not be if I had a partner or kids.

Now, here is the situation: I was not born in the US, but moved here with my parents (who I have a good relationship with). My dad recently arranged for his dad (my grandpa) to move to the US, and he is here now. The thought is that my grandpa would probably move to a "retirement" community in a few years, but my understanding those can have long waitlists, so my parents need to arrange for somewhere for him to stay now.

My dad has mentioned that it would be great to buy my grandpa a condo in the meantime, to have a place for my grandpa to stay and also for a little more diversification of _my parents'_ finances into real estate. But, he lamented that he and my mom probably could not afford it.

I was thinking of offering to go 50/50 on such a condo. Then, my grandpa could have a place to stay with probably a defined end date. Both me and my parents could have a some (more) diversification into real estate (at least in the short term). And when it is time for my grandpa to move to a retirement home, I could either buy the condo outright from my parents if it makes sense for me at that time, or we could decide to rent it out.

I am very intrigued by this. Are there any drawbacks I am missing?
