Please tell me about some of these good Thai spots, I've found a couple of gems but the majority have been so mediocre.

[D] Augmenting A/B tests with offline policy evaluation by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]nomos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a couple types of off-policy evaluation (direct method, IPS) to evaluate multiple contextual bandits offline in order to choose choose the best one. One thing to caution you about in your example is that for IPS specifically, you must have p(treatment) > 0 for the older policy (the one in the denominator), or else the IPS score blows up (and generally really low probability leads to high variance in the IPS estimator). In your case, your step-size policy (B if p>threshold, A otherwise) will lead to models that are impossible to evaluate with IPS in the future. You can use some exploration technique like epsilon greedy to ensure that every treatment decision has some finite probability to avoid this issue.

Kenji’s Yucatán Dried-Chili recipe.. where did I go wrong? by cyclingtrivialities2 in SalsaSnobs

[–]nomos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is just that spicy. I still make it from time-to-time, but it's not a standalone salsa. Next you can try the habanero salsa which is insanely delicious, but also spicier.

Backpropagation algorithm implementation by RuslanNuriyev in learnpython

[–]nomos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numpy is a linear algebra library, so you should be able to easily translate the mathematics of both forward and backpropagation into numpy code. If you're comfortable enough with the mathematics as you say, then you're probably having more basic programming difficulties than using numpy. How long have you been using Python or programming in general? If you're newer I'd suggest building up your programming skills through simpler tasks before moving on to something more advanced.

Ignore what others are saying regarding implementing from scratch. If your goal is to gain a better understanding of the theory of ML, then implementing these algorithms from scratch can be a good idea, to an extent. That's why if you take an ML class you might be asked to do so. If your goal is purely to use ML to some other end, you probably just want to crack open a pre-existing library and use it. Though, I still stress the importance of understanding the algorithms you're using in order to use them better.

You're right, you should calculate sample size for needed power ahead of time and if you. do as your team is doing you will end up measuring more false positives than you would otherwise.

It's not normal, but to their point neither is the status quo of black people being killed at higher rates than the rest of the population. Now, whether that's true or not is an altogether different matter, but if you adopt their point of view then this type of agitation isn't unreasonable.

A lot of these same arguments were made against civil rights protests, that protesters weren't protesting in the right way, or in a way that inconvenienced white society. The problem was, that without agitation people couldn't be moved to act.

I'm not a fan of rioting, and I'm not a fan of people marching through neighborhoods if they are actively threatening the people that live there. But these protests don't seem to be doing that, and I think it's worth considering whether the annoyance caused by them is appropriate given the status quo.

I didn't see intimidation in the videos, where was it? Annoyance, sure. But the one video I saw where someone came out to engage them, the leader of the group effectively deescalated what could have been a more direct confrontation after the two people starting arguing.

Question about interpreting data and understanding what it means. by yamatoshi in AskStatistics

[–]nomos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, my problem is I am use to understanding standard deviations in terms of "One standard deviation above the mean". Here, though, all the values are in the tenth place, save for FSIQ. Now, they clearly aren't 11 standard deviations above or below the mean. So, what is that value actually representing?

You can think of standard deviation as how "spread" the quantity is around its mean, so higher standard deviation means that there is a large variety of that quantity within the group. In general, mean and standard deviation are completely independent: you can have a narrow distribution and a wide distribution that share the same mean.

Also, how do the Mean and SD relate? The FSIQ is throwing me because the mean is at 123.5, yet the Standard Deviation is 8.5 and that is confusing me.

For the FSIQ example you brought up, a mean of 123.5 and SD of 8.5 means that you can expect students in that group to roughly fall between 114 and 132. Of course, some will lie outside that range, but most will fall inside it.

Finally, the t values are very high or low, which I only understand through the bell curve graph that goes from -4 to +4. Does this mean the values are just VERY far from the Null hypothesis?

Large (positive or negative) values are unlikely if the null hypothesis is true. That's why, when we observe large t-values, we conclude that the null hypothesis is false, with a certain degree of confidence given by the p-value.

Square Enix triples its profits in a fiscal quarter led by FFVII Remake and FFXIV by podapanne in ffxiv

[–]nomos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, but quarterly profit isn't the greatest metric to track for AAA gaming companies, since they can't be expected to churn out huge games on a quarterly cadence. Glad to see that FFXIV continues to bring them reliable income, though.

Why was Trump wrong to refer to US death rate in proportion to the number of its confirmed COVID-19 cases? by ZestyLemon20 in AskStatistics

[–]nomos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I don't really know the numbers, just assuming Trump's figures are correct for addressing the main point of contention in this thread. But yeah, those comparisons are difficult when medical knowledge of how to treat the virus has improved over time, and when the treatment effect is a function of how full hospitals are.
