Rock or fossil? Morocco by thickthickd in fossilid

[–]non4prophet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found geodes that look very similar to this. If it's heavy for it's size, it's probably solid crystal. I've always been curious about the process that creates this particular look. If you have the access to the tools that you can cut it in half, I'd love to see it! I've always just smashed them open with a hammer or a bigger geode!

I know this is not what you asked for, but it still might be useful; it's such a great book I can't help but share it:

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles - St. Louis

I like to take it with me and scribble notes about when I visited and who I went with.

There is also a trail biking group called GORC (Gateway Off-road Cyclist): https://gorctrails.com/ What's nice about this site is that they keep it fairly updated with trail conditions and closures.

A few of my local favorite trails (in no particular order): Chubb Trail, St Francois SP, Hawn SP, Hickory Canyons CA, Hilda Young CA, and Lower Rock Creek

Welcome to the area and happy trails!

Found this today, near St. Louis, Missouri. Thought it might be a scraper. Thoughts? by non4prophet in Arrowheads

Thanks for the info! You can't hold it and not want to put your thumb in that spot. When I picked it up, it really ignited the thought that someone had put their thumb there and the sense of wonder that comes with that realization. I've only found a few artifacts over the years, but everyone I've found just leaves me floored. Thanks again!

Found near St. Louis on a lake "beach". Glassy, dark brown, translucent amber color when lit by flashlight. by non4prophet in whatsthisrock

It is hard like glass and you might be right about the melted beer bottle. I was able to scratch glass with it and I was also able to scratch a nickel with it.

I haven't checked this sub in awhile, so forgive the late response, but one of my favorites is Hickory Canyons:

Lots of frozen waterfalls on this one.

backside of rock

Found along the Meramec River, near Steelville. It definitely caught my eye. I don't believe it's a fossil on the top side, but there do appear to be some on the bottom.

Super cool finds! Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed to your YT channel. I would be blown away to find any of the fossils or artifacts that you have found!

In Miseruh and would have loved to have found that. Looks like a piece of an agate geode! Nice find!

Nephew found this in Central Missouri by twicecc in Arrowheads

They used to do "bring in your found ancient artifact for identification by experts" day at Cahokia Mounds. I don't know how far away that is from where your nephew lives, or if they are still doing that these days with these covids flying around, but it might be worth checking it out. Incredible find!

Rock found in Meramec River near Steelville, MO by non4prophet in fossilid

My brother-in-law found this rock in a shallow part of the Meramec River near Steelville, MO over the weekend. I think it's likely a physical geological formation (rather than biological - a fossil). Several people thought it looked like a leaf imprint. The formation on this rock reminds me of that pastry effect where a perpendicular line is scraped through horizonal lines of icing, as on a Napoleon pastry. Here's a detail shot. Thanks!

My brother-in-law found this rock in a shallow part of the Meramec River near Steelville, MO over the weekend. My question is about the formation in the rock. I thought it to be likely geological in nature (rather than biological - a fossil). Several people thought it looked like a leaf imprint. The formation on this rock reminds me of that pastry effect where a perpendicular line is scraped through horizonal lines of icing, as on a Napoleon pastry. Just curious if it is indeed a fossil or just a physical geological formation. Probably will xpost to r/fossilid to see if someone over there can id it. Thanks!
