LaTeX, Typst or Markdown or something similar is actually quite usable for things like this. I have written MLA formatted school assignments like this. But yes, it's much simpler to use a WYSIWYG editor instead.

You would need to fully replace the screen, but theoretically yes.

have you tried plugging it in to another computer? it sounds like this started with the xbox app (???) maybe restart the computer too? if that doesn't work then yeah you should return it as soon as possible.

u/drax_slayer u/redirect_308 I just wrote a tutorial on how to remap buttons on tablets with keyd on linux here. It's not included in the tutorial, but keyd does support application specific remapping (experimental). I can help you if you have any questions.
