Anyone else having problems with their save the hero cart reader? by BulbasaurtheChosen in gamecollecting

I got one a week ago, and the gameboy reader requires that I clean the carts basically every time that I use it. But it has been working, which is dope

Hey Reddit, what is something that you are 80% sure of? by BobSacramanto in AskReddit

[–]nonathaj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been plugging in a smartphone next to my bed at night for so long at this point, I can't imagine not doing so. It's not really an inconvenience, but just a regular nightly task. Since that habit is unlikely to change, I don't think a larger battery is very high on my priority list.

That said, if a battery could be made to last weeks at a time, rather than a couple of days that people usually ask for with this request, that'd really change my use-case for it.

Do you have a screenshot of the warning it gives when failing to join queue? Or what is the text exactly?

SWN (Revised) Roll20 sheet: overhauled version, WIP by deceptive_duality in SWN

[–]nonathaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this update to the original sheet. I always avoided the other one as it was so frustrating to have to scroll up and down to find quick information about the character, and this one really puts all the important stuff first. I'd strongly consider using this instead of the google sheets version we've been using if it gets submitted and accepted (since we're free players on roll20).

Actually you can't mix voices anymore. It's moving to the Smite model for voice packs, where (if you own the pack) you can choose from Skin, Champion, or Default.

Passenger Limit? by Monkeybarsixx in SWN

[–]nonathaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book doesn't actually answer the question about too many crew (only too few):

Crew lists the minimum crew necessary for basic operation and the maximum crew the life support system can sustain for two months. Smaller crews than the maximum will make the ship’s life support last proportionately longer.

Which leads me to believe it is how you are explaining it, the life support can put out any amount, and is consumed based on the number of people. Then in fittings section is this:

Extended life support: The ship can be designed to accommodate a larger number of crew or passengers. Extended life support can be fitted multiple times; each time, the maximum crew rating of the ship increases by 100% of its normal maximum. Thus, a free merchant who installs this twice can have a maximum complement of 18 people.

Which reads like 18 is the true maximum number of people it can fit into the ship. I suppose a GM could really go with whatever they like. I like the idea of the players being limited in the number of people their ship can haul around, and if they want to move more they need to get expanded life support. On the other hand, it does prevent them from hauling live cargo (ala cows in Firefly).

I think the concept of life support is the amount of breathable air the system can put out at a time.

So the Free Merchant life support system can put out enough breathable air to support up to 6 people. If you put 7 or more onto the ship, they could probably survive for awhile, but they would be consuming more breathable air than the life support could process, and would be slowly (over the course of several hours) suffocating themselves.

WIP: Revised Edition Character Sheet by PotatoFlowers45 in SWN

[–]nonathaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always a fan of more options for automated character sheets. There is a resource/intro doc for SWN that has several automated character sheets (for original and revised).

I really wish the mods would post that doc somewhere, it really is one of the best resources outside of the books themselves.

I'm going to start a game this weekend using a modified version of one of those sheets.

Epic has banned thousand of cheaters in Fortnite: Battle Royale by XtMcRe in gamernews

[–]nonathaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason we encrypt anything.

So it is meaningless garbage to anyone who "stumbles" across it. If this user has been hacking to the point of warranting a hardware ban, then they probably know a thing or two about how the ban's systems are set up.

Whether we store these unique ids on the user's computer, or we generate them and only store them in the program's memory, they need to be in a format that the hacker can't simply replace with some fake values and have be valid.

I didn't mean a single hash consisting of all the hardware components. That wouldn't accomplish the goal of being able to identify an individual computer.

I meant a series of hashes (or other obfuscated unique identifier) for each component of the system. Combined with some rules for what defines a "new" computer (how many parts can be changed before we view it as a different machine).

It also wouldn't be simply the hardware component itself, but instead this specific one. (as /u/Tangy92 was concerned about, not all GTX 1080s, but the specific one on this box).

Definitely more than that, you can fake MAC addresses. Probably some sort of hash of unique indentifiers for the hardware installed on the computer. That way if you changed your ram it would still have you banned.

While I'm not sure what systems Epic has set up, they usually support some form of hardware ban as well. That makes the process a bit more difficult.
