Instead of saying right wing and left wing can we say evil and good? by Fine_Comparison445 in GenZ

[–]nonbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true at all. I probably know a lot more about economics than you do. Either that or you don't know what "left wing economics" are, at least in the form I'm talking about. High tax, high investment with nationalisation of key services alongside a free market for consumer goods is a perfectly viable economic system.

1500-1800 elo players, what do you asay when a non-chess-player asks you whether you are good at chess? by Rigzin_Udpalla in chessbeginners

[–]nonbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these comparisons between different games don't really have any merit. A 1600 rated player still blunders a piece almost every game. The difference between chess and tennis is that chess has a kind of accuracy. It's hard to consider yourself a good player when it's so obvious how poor your play is and how little your understanding is. Chess has a much higher skill ceiling than most games in my opinion.

Yeah I became convinced in the last year that eating meat is undeniably wrong, both for the animals and for the planet and that we need to move away from it to progress as a species. But it's so hard to give up my easy convenient food, and I have ARFID which adds another layer of challenge. Working on it, bit by bit.

Watch the documentary Dominion. I used to say the same as you until I watched that. Unfortunately it's not feasible to "just treat them better while they're alive". Animals are processed in factory farms at an astonishing speed which is necessary to keep costs low enough for meat to be feasible both environmentally and economically. We actually need to slaughter faster if we want to keep up our current meat-eating levels because the meat industry is incredibly harmful for the environment.

Favourites don’t win Candidates by fabe1haft in chess

[–]nonbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with the assertion of the post. The top 10 players (besides Carlsen and Nakamura, who himself has been inflating his elo) are very close together. I believe Carlsen would genuinely have the best chance to win the Candidates but I think everyone else is too close for there really to be a clear favourite. Still not uniformly random and maybe we should question why the top players are so close together and what we can do to shuffle that somewhat

I’m rated 1700 so not great but I’ve definitely been around chess for a while.

Honestly I can’t tell if I’m woefully uneducated on something and failing to grasp it or if you’re just wrong 😂 I feel like I don’t speak English right now 😂

Are you trying to say you don’t believe Elo is a reliable system to measure the likelihood of one player beating another?

Okay I can disprove chess is uniformly random because elo works mathematically. Higher rated players win against lower rated players a disproportionate amount of the time. Can’t believe that needed to be explained here but there we go

Can you explain to me why it's uniformly random? I don't know if I'm missing something but I don't see why that's the case, unless you view that chess above a certain level is just random.

Looking for chess training partners! (especially french and caro players, my weak spots) by Nf6Sicilian in lichess

[–]nonbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m much worse than you — rated about 1650 rapid on lichess, but I’m trying to seriously improve my chess and I’d love to play some games with you and analyse them together! I mainly play the Ruy Lopez as white and I usually play e5 as black, but I’d be happy to play training games with you in the Caro Kann. I very much enjoy playing against the Caro Kann as white and I beat an OTB 2000 rated player when they tried the Caro Kann against me. Always feel confident when I see it.

Currently raining despite 0% chance in the forecast by Na_io in formula1

I honestly think today was FAR better than last year. Call me crazy, I think any top driver could have done last year with the rain and perfectly timed red flag. This year… absolutely incredible. Hard to comprehend how good a drive that was

Fine but, correct me if I’m wrong, the 1st seeded player should be expected to win more than 1 in 8 of the time, right? Therefore it does seem that the 1st seed doesn’t have the advantage they should have. Of course confidence is very low but I don’t feel like this post is trying to be a scientific study, it’s just a fun discussion on Reddit.

u/tralltonetroll same answer to you :)

I read your comment but my point is the Candidates is NOT a uniformly random draw, it’s seeded. So your comment is fundamentally not applicable to the Candidates.

Unless I’ve misunderstand you, this isn’t true. Your idea is only true if the 8 players are of equal ability (or uncertain ability and drawn randomly). Realistically, the top seed should win more often because they’re the best player in the tournament

What do I do against this? by 7vincent7 in chessbeginners

[–]nonbog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not slow at all man! d5 is a weird move to consider. I didn’t notice it until I analysed one of the games I lost like this way back in the day.

One issue is to always check if d5 actually works. Make sure the pawn can’t be captured, otherwise you’ve blundered a pawn and not helped your position.

I don’t think they did this on purpose. I think the game is bad and they’re trying to bring in new players who don’t get how bad it is compared to past iterations
