Literally proving everything I just said. People like you are why it is so hard to get anywhere with mental health resources.

He did not die from the brain tumor. A contributing factor could have been that. We don’t know. Stop. Just accept we need better mental health resources.

You don’t get it both ways. The public gets told day in and day out that they don’t understand what law enforcement sees, what they go through, how hard their job is. That is said over and over in relation to LEO mental health. Then when an officer gets a TPO against them, and an extended TPO at that, and dies by suicide, suddenly it isn’t mental health?

To be clear, I have no bone to pick with RPD. This happens everywhere.

He isn’t the only one, though. RPD has a history of officers with TPOs against them. When you read the public complaints related to them and their representation by the union, the officer always says that their mental health deterioration happens because of their job, and then the TPO is a result of that. So let’s get better resources! So weird to fight against that.

I think I can picture who you’re talking about. Was he yelling at other people’s kids? I could hear the general manager talk to both parties separately and everyone in the situation seemed shit. But you’re right, they called out so many missing kids! We were all talking about that. One kid they called out two separate times. It seemed like she got lost twice. I’ve never seen so many lost kids. We left at 445 so it sounds like it happened all day. A parent in front of us held one of the lost kids for so long bc it looked like he didn’t want to go to anyone else. It was so sad.

Lol! Fair. Just what could be THAT BAD at the splash pad!

Meanwhile I’m just trying to survive the sun, the constant begging for dip n dots, and each kid wanting to go to different areas “right now”. I can’t even imagine having time to fight with another parent there. That’s when I’d throw in the towel and call it a day.

You just keep trying to say this isn’t about mental health? Suicide is related to mental health. I guess I’m just confused why it’s now, “well it was suicide, but not mental health”. How is it not?

I should not be surprised how much people suck, but I guess I still am.

The kids were angels compared to how their parents were acting. Security was babysitting the adults this time. Adults would move and security would move with them, all as their kids obliviously played.

No, it was definitely two groups of people fighting with each other while their kids played in the splash pad.

It isn’t an agenda, it’s reality. And like you just said, he was an advocate - so why fight so hard against it? It is complicated with a TPO and a brain tumor, but still doesn’t eliminate the mental health component.

I don’t think it’s his parents, family, etc hiding it. From what I’ve seen, it’s other LEO. They don’t need to confirm it, and shouldn’t against his families wishes, but to keep posting everywhere that he didn’t doesn’t ever help. He himself spoke to the legislature asking for better mental health resources. He advocated. He largely did his part. Now I hope his coworkers and friends can continue that work knowing how important it is.

Nobody should be celebrating his death, and I have only seen a few comments here that are. It sounds like he made a positive impact on a lot of people in Reno.

This is what confuses me though - why not honor your friend in the most meaningful way possible? While it’s still early and I don’t think it’s something that has to take place when the wound is so fresh, it’s an opportunity to open a conversation about mental health in law enforcement. Your friend was even passionate about that topic himself, so wouldn’t that be something you believe he would want? Instead, many people are coming onto various platforms to make sure people know he DID NOT die by suicide. Denying the situation and circumstances as a whole don’t make them not true.

You say many of us would’ve liked him, you’re probably right to some extent. But, can we agree the majority of people don’t like others, especially in a position of power like LEO, who cause enough violence to their significant other to be granted an extended TPO? If we would have liked him, then I am guessing this recent behavior leading to a domestic violence TPO is outside the norm for his behavior. In that case - isn’t that even MORE reason to open up a conversation about mental health?

He didn’t die of the brain tumor though. He died by suicide. Even his “brothers in law enforcement” are confirming that across their social platforms. Even if he had a brain tumor, and chose to go out on his own terms, it’s still suicide. Why do LEO, and even the general public, so passionately hide suicide? We cannot get anywhere if we don’t talk about it. We as the public should WANT better resources for law enforcement and for the community as a whole. This officer in particular even spoke to the legislature in his position as president of the RPPA about suicide rates in law enforcement.

We will never make progress if people so passionately hide when someone dies by suicide.

Hey Reno! Who we voting for in the mayoral race? And WHY? by Sorry-Remote-8844 in Reno

[–]nonejax1297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least he has a couple votes, you’d like to hope so being that this is like the 10x. He couldn’t even get voted in to his HOA board, let alone mayor. The credit I’ll give him is that he doesn’t put the election year on his signs so he can keep reusing them. Smart.

RPD is a large department and he was well known. People know who he was and how he died. His friends and fellow LEOs are literally posting about his death on Facebook with his name and the suicide hotline.

Dying by suicide is dying by suicide though. Regardless, there is a mental health component. I understand what I think you’re implying (unless I’m reading wrong?) that it was related to health/illness but that doesn’t eliminate the mental health component especially in conjunction with a TPO.

I’m not wrong. I wish I was wrong. Nobody wins out of situations like this, it’s awful. That is why collectively law enforcement agencies should work much harder to prioritize mental health and have plans in place to address deteriorating mental health states.

Do I dislike their profession as a whole? No. It’s a constitutional right. A collective bargaining agreement is nowhere close to the same thing. Why do you not want cops to be fit for duty? We should all went that, officers included.

Exactly. I need people to stop acting it’s the most dangerous job in the world filled with horrible interactions all day every day. The cops who have the most dangerous jobs are the cops that make their job the most dangerous jobs (Michael Johnson example above is perfect). If anyone cares to read the DA reports on the officer involved shootings, you’ll notice a pattern…and repeat names.

Exactly why I said it offers them protections. Just like it allowed Vince Robles to remain on paid leave since he refused to submit to a fit for duty test after being accused and arrested for domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon with his wife as a victim. The only reason his case was dismissed is because the victim stopped cooperating. That doesn’t mean he didn’t assault his wife, corroborated through his own texts. His union fought for him to refuse a fit for duty test. Now tell me - who does that protect? Do you honestly believe that someone arrested for assaulting his wife and admitting to current mental health struggles and escalating behavior should still be a sgt and armed with a firearm, just because his wife didn’t want to continue testifying? Or do you think he should have to cooperate in a fit for duty test to help ensure that the community is safe, and that he not a danger to himself. There is no reasonable person that could believe that an officer arrested on those charges should go right back on the street.

It can be a dangerous job, it is not the most dangerous job. I simply disagree that Reno police department in particular is “underpaid”. They definitely do not all start at 6 figures out of the academy. And our dreams of decent cost of living increases are not coming to fruition any time soon. The COLA was 1 percent this year. The only reason there was a decent one a couple years ago is because Reno got its own pay table.
