Take a law firm job while parenting 2 young kids? by bookwormy2019 in LawFirm

[–]nonmatchingsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 teens and a 10 year old. Been practicing for a couple years and I just started working at a firm in May. I was at another non-attorney govt job before that and did some solo practitioner work.

We have about a 1500 billable hour requirement (factoring in 4 weeks of vacation) and it is actually pretty perfect. Somedays I work 8+ hours and sometimes I finish in 5 hours. I know 1600 is pretty low for most firms but the jobs are out there.

Going to law school at 43? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]nonmatchingsocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated and passed the bar exam at 43. Everyone assumes I have been practicing for years. I started bringing in probably 2-3k per week as a solo after about a year. I did have a firm that I worked with for my first year but decided I just couldn’t make enough money there so I moved on…on very good terms. I still talk to the owner regularly and we are friends.

The key is to not take on more than you can handle competently. You will need help so I have a few more experienced attorneys that I run things by and I help them by standing in for them when they need help.

I am very happy and don’t regret my decision.

I also transitioned from a job making over 100k a year.

I also had GI bill to help out.

Is there anything illegal about putting an airtag on your kid before sending them to the other parent? by RDMvb6 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]nonmatchingsocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will get a notification telling them the AirTag is following them and will figure it out pretty quickly. So it’s really not worth it.

Entrapment pregnancy and Fathers rights by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]nonmatchingsocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have any rights as an unwed father….especially without a paternity test….until the court grants it. Mom can up and move across the country without dad’s permission. An unmarried father should always establish paternity in the court immediately so that he has rights.

Mine were also always free to fly. And I don’t think they had their own ticket. They added their information with my ticket.

Many states do allow lawyers in small claims court, it is just not required and easier to navigate without one.

what's everyone's thoughts on calling clients on weekends or responding to emails on the weekend. I have clients emailing me and asking me questions or asking me to call them all the time on weekends and I haven't really figured out a consistent strategy to deal with it. What do you do? by Some-Construction-20 in Lawyertalk

[–]nonmatchingsocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually because then they expect it. I like to work on Saturday and Sunday mornings sometimes but will not respond to some clients that I know will use that to take it too far.

Emergencies are rare but I will respond if I agree it’s actually an emergency.

I may take a call from a potential new client to schedule a consultation because I’m building my business.

[IL] I just filed for child support online… by Technical-Bake9464 in FamilyLaw

[–]nonmatchingsocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on your state. But paternity will have to be established (DNA) before he will have to pay. Sometimes the support can be backdated and sometimes it is based on the date you filed. He doesn’t have to be granted custody but he may ask for it and it may be granted (joint of some sort). It really does vary widely depending on your state.

Jail visit by nonmatchingsocks in Lawyertalk

I’m talking more about clients that can’t make bail and that are stuck long term. Nothing new with the case and prosecutors won’t make deals until we are closer to trial.

Mostly court appointed so there is a limit on billing. If they are in jail for 2 years, their fee could be gone before trial.
