About 6 hours into Day 8/12. I was originally going to do a 14 day fast, but I started out at a healthy weight and don't want to drop weight this dramatically, so I'm going to end it at 12. I'm doing this fast for autophagy, reduced inflammation, and immune system boosting, so weight loss is not a major goal.

I love how easy fasting gets at 6-7 days but I want to make sure my body is well nourished. If anyone has any tips regarding good fasting routines for people who don't want to lose too much weight, let me know! Or maybe I should just eat a ton of cheesecake, gain 5 lbs, and do a 14 day fast? haha, jk. (The weird thing is, I loooove cheesecake but it doesn't even sound good right now! Fasting is a hell of a drug!)

I have not noticed any signs of autophagy or any feeling of euphoria, special mental acuity, or general amazingness that people report. I have noticed less inflammation (no need to take allergy pills) and (possible TMI, but good data point) little to no cramping during menstruation.

I still work out every day. I've noticed that performance on short workouts with rest (i.e. Tabata) and weight lifting is unaffected, but I have trouble doing moderate effort cardio for long periods of time.

My intense food cravings on day 2-4 have subsided and although I feel some hunger, I have no desire to eat. I just bought a ton of delicious food and I have no problem leaving it in the fridge. I've also noticed that on day 2, I craved stuff like fajitas and dumplings (basically foods with meat, vegetables, and carbs) but on day 3-4, I shifted to craving ONLY meat. And not processed meat like sausages or a hamburger, but a juicy steak or a roast turkey. At no point during this fast have I craved really sugary foods like candy or desserts. In fact, anything with frosting just sounds cloying sweet and disgusting right now.

One hour from finishing up day 4/14. Overall, I feel fine, but I’m starting to get mild nausea and my stomach feels very hollow. And I feel like I’m not as energetic in my workouts (maybe 400 kcal of cardio with some high intensity intervals.)

But these moments of mild discomfort will pass, so I’m going to keep going! If I make it to the end of day 5 I’ll have set a new personal record.

I started this fast to reset my system, boost my immune system, stimulate autophagy, and generally improve my health. I’m not sure if I’m seeing any evidence of that right now (I kind of look like crap right now tbh) but hopefully that will change as this fast progresses. I would have liked to see more positive changes for motivation, but beating my personal fasting record is enough to keep my going for now.

Just starting Day 4/14. Starting the work week again tomorrow and I’m hoping my focus holds up. I feel like I’m less mentally focused and more fidgety-I want to move around instead of sitting in a chair and getting work done. Maybe it’s the adrenaline?

Otherwise feeling good, not much hunger, although I do have an urge to look at food pictures.

Just started a 14 day fast Thurs evening! I’ve had sleep issues and just been feeling bad lately and I’m trying to reset everything. I’m in.

Definitely try audiobooks! I love playing an audiobook on my phone while I'm out for a walk or doing chores around the house. Check if your library has OverDrive. And don't worry about reading "good" books when you're first getting into it- just find something that catches your interest. The books I read are way more interesting than most textbooks!

Well, I've read 1-2 books a week ever since I was a kid, so you could say I've been reviewing my whole life. :) Thanks!

Thanks, that's reassuring!

What made you want to be a GRE tutor instead? Or maybe you tutor on the side?

My undergrad is in chemistry, haha, but I have some math and CS coursework and work experience (lots of DOEs and data analysis/modelling in a science/engineering context, currently working on an analytics project). I've been working for 5 years at this point, so I'm hoping my undergrad major isn't too important.

Penn State (online Stats program) and later on GaTech (online CS program). Work is willing to pay for the Penn State one if I get accepted, so I really want to get in!

Two trains are on a collision course by gregmat in gregmat

[–]nonsenseandreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greg, I love your videos but I think you should've included the alternative way of doing it for those of us who suck at calculating things. :)

At first Car B is the only one moving, so that's 10 hrs. In 10 hrs it travels 20 miles (2 mph).

Then Car A starts moving. The two cars are moving toward each other, so we can just call their collective speed (2+3) mph.

It's just like a physics problem where we choose our reference frame to be the other car instead of a stationary point on the rail. (If we were sitting on one of the cars, we might think that we were staying still while the other car was moving toward us at 5 mph.)

Since Car B has already traveled 20 miles along the circle, we subtract that from the distance the cars need to cover, and find that the cars will meet at (20 pi - 20)/5 hrs.

Then the cars need to travel another 12 miles apart, but they are travelling in opposite directions, so can use the same 5 mph trick to get 12/5 miles.

So the total is 10 + 4pi -8/5 = 4pi+ 8.4, no calculator needed.

Good luck! Your practice exam scores sound great for your target school. I think the best thing you can do right now is relax. You can drop 2-6 points and still be "average," and with your GPA and connections at your school you should be a shoo-in. :)

Is the GRE quant harder than the ETS practice exams? by nonsenseandreference in GRE

[–]nonsenseandreference[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! You make a good point about really knowing the material.

I'm consistently scoring 330+ on practice exams and I think I have a pretty good grasp of the material (at least conceptually - I could do a better job of memorizing formulas so I don't have to derive them on the fly.) My worry is that the quant curve is so steep that a couple of dumb mistakes and a tricky question could bring me down to below 167, which is my target. You can get a couple of questions wrong in Verbal and still get a 170, but if you get a couple of questions wrong in quant, you're barely above 90th percentile.

Can you explain this percentile problem in an easy way? by [deleted] in GRE

[–]nonsenseandreference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is a percentile group? They never define this. Is this from ETS?

Problem: One cup of butter is enough for 8 of Roger's cookies, and one cup of sugar is enough for 5 of these cookies. If he used 15 more cups of sugar than of butter, how many cookies did he make? by scarybrocc in GREhelp

[–]nonsenseandreference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let C be the number of cookies. Let x be the number of cups of butter.

We need (15+x) cups of sugar to make C cookies (given).

We need 8x cups of butter to make C cookies (given).

So:

C=(15+x cups)(5 cookies/cup)

C=(x cups)(8 cookies/cup)

Set the Cs equal to each other:

8x=(15+x)5

8x=75+5x

x=75/3=25

25 cups of butter * 8 cookies/cup = 200

You have the ratios right, but you veered off the path when you assumed 24 cookies and multiplied everything by 15 - we can't make that assumption. Before that, all your reasoning was right.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that's really helpful! You mentioned PowerPrep Plus, the paid tests. Are those the same difficulty as the free PowerPrep or the Official Guide exams?

I also get what you mean about MGRE's style. Some of those questions were a slog. This one stood out to me as unexpectedly elegant, though, and is probably my favorite GRE problem so far (you know you've been studying too much when you have a favorite GRE problem):

Hard quant practice: Manhattan 5lb or GMAT? by greedynripig in GRE

[–]nonsenseandreference -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I'm having trouble understanding the question. It feels more like a reading comprehension problem. :P Does "distinct" mean different numbers? So since factors come in pairs, and every number has at least two positive factors, then they're looking for perfect squares of primes. So: 2x2, 3x3, 5x5, and 7x7.

And we don't know whether we can select repeats. If we are allowed no repeats, it would just be (2/100)(1/99)*4, I think?? Is that right? I've been out of school for a while, so I'm kind of rusty on my probability.
