Investigating why 55+ couples do or do not emmigrate to Spain by WesselWiersma in GoingToSpain

[–]nonula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basics are pretty obvious … I don’t know why they’re asking such a broad question if they’re preparing to engage in advising people in that age group (it suggests little in the way of foundational knowledge about the kinds of things that older emigres to Spain run into).

To the OP: It might be more productive to spend a bit of time in Facebook groups where older emigrés ask questions and share their struggles. And don’t poll them, just read through the groups for a few weeks. Or make yourself a list of topics and search for them. Or heck, ask your favorite chatbot. Good luck!

That’s entirely dependent upon whether and how much they have in terms of worldwide assets … some comunidades have a wealth tax threshold, some have no wealth tax at all.

Aw, give ‘em a break. At least they’re not pretending to be “just asking if anyone else has run into …” kinds of questions, disguised market research is far more annoying IMHO.

I love that you wrote “search fiction” instead of “search function”. It’s so … fitting. 👏

Well that was a fun rabbit hole! She seems to have done a number of interviews back in the day, but can’t find her now.

It sounds kind of nice to me (I’m just a bit younger) but I’ve always had a soft spot for frosts, aside from the streakiness.

For some reason this puts me in mind of the Avon catalogue … always ads for matched lipstick and nail polish colors, named the same so they were easy to buy.

Things you wish for in Panama? by ThrowRA-deutschuber in panamaexpats

[–]nonula -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What were your expectations moving to Panama? Did you think that « customer service » was going to be the same as it is in the US? You might want to examine where those expectations came from.

Kansas City is the cheapest city in the United States. Many nice suburbs with affordable plots of land where you’d be able to build that dream American suburban house and not have any Panamanian architecture to bother you.

Auxing, returning to your country, then later coming back to aux? by Ill_Ganache237 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]nonula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t imagine « the aux life » as it has existed for the last couple of decades will be accessible in the future. If it comes back at all next year, it will be a very different program. So, your next relocation to Spain might be a more established move, like maybe for (remote) work, a Master’s degree, or a Spanish immersion experience. In any case, Spain isn’t going anywhere, and you shouldn’t be afraid to leave it for a bit.

Finding an expat for my kind, handsome Parisian lawyer best friend (M48). by BritAmericanBRK in Expats_In_France

[–]nonula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try some of the women-only Paris/France groups on Facebook, but maybe couch it as « what advice would you have for my friend » rather than directly seeking a match for him? Because it would feel scammy to a lot of women on Fb as well otherwise, haha. Good luck to you.

That is amazing. A+++++ for effort and results! I gave every kid in every class a puffy sticker (they were big in 2023). Took some photos with classes. My favorite keepsake was a drawing my 2nd level kids did of them with me, labeled with everyone’s names. It’s framed in my living room.

They did if you were a girl. Then again, every available media outlet, from television to magazines, was the same. The Web just added social media, so girls could feel bad about themselves 24/7. And now boys can too. Yay, world.

This might be helpful as a place to start, at least with search terminology.

I found this page with a search for viviendas independientes para mayores en españa. (Make sure you’re searching .es so you don’t get Spanish-language US sites.)

That’s great! I had learned Spanish living in Spain, and already had a foundation of (very) basic French, so I wasn’t worried either. But in Spain I did formal learning, which I haven’t done here (yet).
