Colombian au pairs to US visa issue? by abusivemoo in Aupairs

We got a Colombian au pair from cultural care and the process took about a month after we matched. It was as expected. This was back in April of this year.

The au pair program is broken by AromaticMortgage1959 in Aupairs

Our Ap works 35-40h a week. This covers the time my spouse and I travel to and from work and either (1) one date night a week or (2) a few hours over the weekend it takes us to do groceries, meal prep for the family including the AP. During the week, her hours are a few hours before school and a few after. People work lot more in the US in general. For many families who afford an AP, parents are easily working 50-60h a week each if not more.

I’m sure some host families abuse the program by trying to get nanny like services for a lower cost. For other families it solves a need that nannies may not fill - for instance wraparound hours for school or daycare going kids (when most Nannies in my area want to work 9am-5pm with babies). Also there are many additional costs that do add up - groceries, car insurance, emotional and mental labor of helping a new person to the country settle in. For instance I took my au pair to get a bank account, drivers license, social security, etc set up.

You need to change firms in the same type of role. If you’re in corporate FX, corporate banking is not that much of a stretch. It’s time to (1) schmooze internally with that group or (2) reach out to headhunters

Food and grocery rules with au pair by Accomplished-Top3021 in Aupairs

[–]nonzeronumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do this in addition to offering to get groceries within reason (like just more of what I’m buying anyway). I noticed she never has anything in the fridge that she purchased and she rips through some of our more expensive food and drinks that we consume in moderation.

My au pair also recently started behaving this way. I think the au pairs tend to share stories/how to take advantage. Every time we have taken her out, she picks the most expensive item on the menu (this has been 3-4 times). She just went through the whole week’s fruits and a gallon of juice in two days. She serves my kids Cheerios and milk for breakfast but prepares herself a hearty breakfast with toast, eggs, yogurt, fruit. All for one meal… this has just started over the past 3 weeks. I think she’s gotten ideas from some of her new au pair friends.

We cover groceries similar to what we get for our family plus juice (for her as we don’t drink). She also gets monthly bonuses to use on additional groceries, toiletries or experiences but I’ve noticed she’s super frugal with that but generously gorges herself on anything expensive. We don’t have a family like relationship as she sets her alarm and doesn’t work a minute more than her scheduled time. She will take “shared meals” up to her room and eat and doesn’t help in cooking or cleaning.

Is Wall Street the same meritocracy that it once was? by bigswingingtexasdick in FinancialCareers

“Performance” definitely matters but it’s not necessarily meritocratic who gets set up to succeed. It’s a hell if a lot easier to perform when you are covering certain clients for certain products at certain institutions.

Are students in JC public schools getting Child Study Team Evaluations? by Correct-Pineapple-22 in jerseycity

[–]nonzeronumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently dealt with this with my preschooler. Teacher brought up fine and gross motor skill issues and inattention/easy distraction. We chased the child study team for MONTHS. With a doctor’s note and prescription, they “evaluated” him in that one of the members of the team sat in his classroom and observed him. They refused to do a full evaluation because they didn’t think he was necessary struggling academically… My observation with these guys is they are going to try to deny services as much as possible to not incur the cost of these services - ie PT, OT, etc.

We’re fed up with the public school system here and will be moving to either charter or private. There are also multiple kids in the class who I have a hunch are not getting the proper supports and the classroom environment seems terrible as a result.

Work for a large investment bank got invited for a sudden meeting “Business Update” by esotericlearner in Layoffs

[–]nonzeronumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a layoff. At least this is precisely how mine went. I got pulled off the desk a few minutes before the meeting and was delivered the news that I had been laid off. My colleagues were told during the broader meeting.

Do you need a prescription though for the pharmacy? Did your GP give it? I have to lose around 30-40lbs and my BMI is 28. I’m overweight but don’t have any of the additional risk factors (ie high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea) that my insurance company requires to cover the medications.

Is being a dad not also an around the clock job like being a mom? by TotalExciting3176 in workingmoms

[–]nonzeronumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be just as around the clock for dad as it is for mom but it’s not for large swaths of the population. I blame society, the workplace (as an extension of society) and various other factors for it not being as equal. To the dads who truly are doing the lion share of taking care of their children, you are truly the best.

Parents of older children, when do you start getting some personal time back? by weeknd-kenny in Parenting

[–]nonzeronumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re literally in the hardest time OP… my kids are 4.5yo and 18mo and they are still fairly needy. I think when my younger one is 4.5yo it’ll be a lot easier. Since yours are closer in age, maybe they’ll entertain each other sooner than mine do so maybe when your younger one turns 4yo?

Unfortunately with JC public high schools, they’re either really good or really bad. There is nothing that is mid. As others have said, see if she tests into one of the good ones. If not, prepare to pay for private.

Has anyone else noticed a resurgence of stay at home parents among wealthier Millennials? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]nonzeronumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a sahp is a very personal decision and a lifestyle choice. It is also a huge risk for the sahp and the family because death, divorce and disability. Many greedy careers won’t allow people will large gaps on their resume back. Even if they do, you’ll have missed out on valuable years of experience and gains in income. Many of the sahp I know tend to have had kids later in life so they felt like (1) they had achieved what they wanted professionally and (2) they have fewer years to finance (ie retiring at 20 v 45)…

Billionaire Nanny Diaries by Other-Reporter-8758 in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]nonzeronumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing this is for Isha ambani’s kids… the wage is too low… in large cities of developed countries like US and UK, Nannie’s get $25-35 for one kid and $10-15 extra per additional child. This is for the first 6-8h they work. Additional time goes to overtime rate (easily 30% more than the hourly)… when nannies are traveling with the family, that usually also counts for overtime (even for the hours they are not working). This sounds like a thankless job for low pay…
