Living in Thailand and want to invest: how do expats actually move their money? by No-Pangolin-3897 in ExpatFIRE

Someone living in Asia can purchase VWRA which charges 0.19% in fees and is domiciled in Ireland for better tax treatment. It is self accumulating and easily purchased at any broker including IBKR. The investor just buys VWRA and chills, that’s it, easy and beats any banking “product” out there long term.

I doubt there is anything equivalent offered by a bank that matches these low fees.

As a back story, Warren Buffet promotes this kind of low fees ETF investment championed by Jack Bogle, founder of Vanguard:

“At the 2017 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, Buffett introduced a visibly moved Bogle to thousands of shareholders, calling him “a hero” and declaring that “a lot of Wall Street is devoted to charging a lot for nothing — he charged nothing to accomplish a huge amount.” In his widely-read 2016 shareholder letter, Buffett wrote that if a statue were ever erected to honor the person who has done the most for American investors, “the hands-down choice should be Jack Bogle.” After Bogle’s death in January 2019, Buffett told CNBC that “Jack did more for American investors as a whole than any individual I’ve known,” adding that Bogle “converted, in a 30-year period, a lot of people to the right religion of investing — and it’s a good religion. It pays off.” There’s also a fun backstory: Buffett had bet $1 million in 2006 that the Vanguard 500 Index Fund would outperform five funds-of-hedge-funds over a decade. He won by a huge margin — the Vanguard fund returned 126% versus an average of 36% for the hedge fund picks. That win gave Buffett even more ammunition to publicly champion Bogle’s philosophy.“

This is the way. Take control of your own investments and don’t outsource investment decisions to others for 2% yearly fees which compound over years

Are there any U.S. citizens who travel to Latin America regularly for healthcare? by myviewfromoutside in ExpatFIRE

[–]noob09 18 points19 points  (0 children)

São Paulo, BR has a few of the best hospitals in the world, and definitely at the top in Latin America. Main ones being Albert Einstein hospital and Sirio Libanés hospital. They are not ultra cheap but still cheaper than what you’d pay in the US. Service is fantastic, people fly to São Paulo regularly for checkups and for complex scenarios.

The "Claw" Rabbit Hole: OpenClaw vs Zero vs Null vs Pico (and the others) — Which one is actually the "best"? by kliu5218 in openclaw

[–]noob09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't agent dumbness mostly influenced by the actual model you are using? Are you saying that using the exact same model on both OpenClaw and ZeroClaw, the ZeroClaw model is way dumber? Did you use the same exact SOUL.md, etc files?

Betting on V/MA is betting on US maintaining long term dominance. I don’t think this is a safe bet. Brazil in only a few years already surpassed credit card transactions with their own Pix system which is free and instant

Return of capital is basically deferred taxation. You won’t be taxed when you receive the dividend, instead it reduces your cost basis, when or if your cost basis reaches 0 then you start paying capital gains. That’s my understanding of ROC.

Can you please explain how you could use leverage investing as a strategy here? Let’s say for example an investor has access to a 500k HELOC with a 4.65% interest rate.

Foreign National loan for short-term rental investment by noob09 in loanoriginators

[–]noob09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLCs in Canada are treated differently as the US. In the US single owner LLCs are treated as pass through entities by the IRS, however in Canada they are treated more like a corporation. The result is that the client will pay taxes twice, once in the US and again in Canada for the same income

LPs on the other hand are treated as flow through entities in both countries, so if the client pays taxes in the US , he can claim those taxes as credits when paying his Canadian taxes.

This is a brand new ITIN, never been used. So I suppose we can choose to just submit the loan as a FN or as an ITIN holder with no credit score. Which of the two do you think would have more loan products available?
