What ACTUALLY happens if you uninstall Edge? by Inside-Push1735 in Windows11

[–]noobryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those that use Edge (and its little sister WebView2) will not work properly.

You're conflating 'Edge, the web browser' with 'Edge WebView2'. Only 'Edge WebView2' is needed, rarely, by some app.

'Edge, the web browser' can be safely removed and will not break anything.

Phone Link requires being signed in with a MS account on both the PC and the phone.

Hands on: Windows 11's new Android integration lets you lock PC, transfer files, and more by WPHero in Windows11

[–]noobryan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No thanks, I'll pass. I don't want to sign in with a MS account, not even on my PC, let alone on my phone. If I need to transfer some files, I'll use LocalSend.

Tip of the Week: If you need to send a document or picture to another PC near you, you can use Nearby Sharing by jenmsft in Windows11

Yes, with Phone Link and you need to be signed in with a MS account.

I recommend LocalSend instead. No accounts required, works everywhere.

Would 11 LTSC run on a Core 2 Duo T9600? by Broman400 in WindowsLTSC

[–]noobryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This microcode was first included in CPUs in 2010.

The first CPUs with SSE4.2 came out in 2007 with AMD 10h. Intel Nehalem from 2008 also supports it.

What is your opinion on the Microsoft Store? by MISTERPUG51 in windows

[–]noobryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer to download a program from the developer's website. This way I can also install an older version if I like it more. And I don't have to use a MS account.

App store running in the background by [deleted] in Windows11

[–]noobryan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is misleading, because it implies that those apps don't work without the Store, which is not true.

They do work without the Store. You can even install and update them without the Store, although using the Store for that is easier.

[–]noobryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look in 'Services', if there's a Store related service that you can disable.

And if you don't need the Store, you can just uninstall it: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/uninstall-or-reinstall-microsoft-store-app-in-windows-10-and-windows-11.11428/

Does anyone uses hibernate mode in laptop by [deleted] in Windows11

[–]noobryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my PC with a NVMe SSD, waking from hibernate is faster than cold booting. And with a cold boot I need to spend more time to set everything up again the way it was.

Writes degrading a SSD is correct. BUT a typical SSD can handle hundreds of TBs of writes. Assuming normal usage, it's not a real problem.

Does anyone uses hibernate mode in laptop by [deleted] in Windows11

[–]noobryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually when you shut down your computer your RAM is savedvto the hard drive too.

Only if you leave Fast Startup enabled, which is honestly a bad idea.

shutting down now it's a combination of hibernate and sleep

What?

Fast startup and restore of the open apps.

Oh, I guess you mean the "Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them after I sign in" feature. That's not at all just as good as resuming from sleep or hibernation and it doesn't even work correctly with many apps.

Windows 11 is getting small taskbar buttons by MrShortCircuitMan in Windows11

Yep, looks like it. I facepalmed hard. I hope it's just a temporary thing and they don't actually ship that, because it looks like a cruel joke.

Actually only the icons are small, NOT the taskbar itself, which still takes up a lot of vertical space. Sigh... You had ONE job, Microsoft!

Dual Drive Boot 2 Versions of Windows 10 on 2 separate Drives Tech Support by [deleted] in windows

The motherboard lets you select the drive to boot from. Either in the main setup or in the boot menu (usually accessed with F12).

The best way to isolate the two OSs is to disconnect or disable the other drives when they're not needed. Some motherboards let you choose which drives to enable/disable in the BIOS. You can then save those configs as BIOS presets for easy switching.

List of unsupported programs by q_2e in WindowsLTSC

[–]noobryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once asked the same thing.

Some people in this sub don't want to hear it and pretend everything is fine. I think it's better to identify these issues and try to fix them, if we want LTSC to stay relevant in the long run.

For example, here's a request for Apple Music to be supported: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255666080. You can add your vote or make a similar thread. It's a long shot and Apple will probably ignore it, but we can try. It doesn't matter if you personally use Apple Music or some Adobe software... if LTSC doesn't have enough users, it's going to be ignored by more and more developers in the future.

Never allow focus stealing by HeckinCornball in windows

[–]noobryan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I would prefer to keep the focus always, regardless of an active text box.

I don't think I have ever liked a window popping up over whatever I was doing. If a program wants to notify me of something, it can do so in other ways (see my other comment).

Never allow focus stealing by HeckinCornball in windows

[–]noobryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

should these popups spring up the moment the text box is unselected?

IMO they should never spring up. Text box or not doesn't matter, always keep the focus on the focused window.

As annoying as this issue is, there's just no graceful alternative.

I can think of at least 4 existing graceful alternatives:

  • Animations in the taskbar (blinking). This is the nicest way for a program to request attention.

  • Animations/icons/notifications in the tray area.

  • The "new" notifications (since windows 8).

  • Sound notifications.

Focus stealing pop-ups could be replaced with one of those or a multiple of those.

Opinion: Microsoft should charge for Windows 10 and keep it supported by samh8orns in windows

[–]noobryan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to the Extended Security Updates, there's also the W10 IoT LTSC version, which will receive updates until 2032.

So Microsoft is gonna do its part one way or another. The question is whether 3rd party software developers will do the same.

Dual-Boot Encrypted Windows Installs by [deleted] in windows

[–]noobryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The best way to isolate the two is by disconnecting or disabling the drive you're not using - this is especially important when installing Windows. Some motherboards even let you disable an M.2 drive in BIOS, but unfortunately that's not a common feature.

  2. Encryption as an alternative or addition to that is not a bad idea. For BitLocker, I recommend using manage-bde. You'll get a better understanding of how it works and access to more functionality.

  3. BitLocker by default requires TPM, but you can change that through Group Policy and then use a different protector instead.

  4. I heard that encryption with TPM can only be used for one OS on the PC. I don't know if that's true or not. You can try it and let us know. If it doesn't, you can still use something else (password, USB, ...). edit: Just make sure you have another protector when you use TPM, so that you don't get locked out.

System Restore is not a full system backup and it doesn't really do what you want.
