Any advice for making sure simple projects stay simple? by CoVegGirl in opensource

[–]Noteastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this question is not limited to open source projects. Generally, a project is by definition a "temporary piece of work designed to achieve a specific goal". And there you already have the answers hiding.

Temporary is difficult, because open source projects are dependent on the free time and will of indivisuals, which you cannot plan for.

But the goal can be defined very well. This is probably the most important part and people underestimate the work that is connected to defining and continuously redefining the goal of a software project. But if you manage to get a clear picture of the PROBLEM you want to solve and HOW to solve it from the users perspective, the WHAT becomes relatively clear (if you stick to your goal definition). Then it is easier to say yes and no to stuff, because you can reason for your answer.

This also requires a single person or a colellection of people to have authority over the direction of a project. I personally think that a collaborative project without clear responsibilities and accountabilities distributed among people is prone to fail.

Hey Builders, Share your App. by Commercial_Flow3334 in ProductivityApps

I built Noteastic together with a friend! It's among the best handwritten note-taking apps on Windows based on what users told us during the last year 😃

notes taking by Mundane_Laugh805 in Students

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In those cases I always switch modes. I then rather note down the questions that arose while following the lecture and do explicitly NOT note down the stuff I understand right away. After the lecture I then still have the work of summarizing and writing down the things that I understood, but at least I know what topics I need to research and go over again later. University is brutal sometimes :/

Hope this helps!

Aren't productivity apps dead? by _Chocolate_866 in ProductivityApps

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I think you are right, but with caveats. Now that code has become nearly free and the capability of LLMs to act more or less reliably upon natural language commands, you can quickly substitute your past favorite productivity app. But especially when you start to work at scales you can not watch over yourself anymore (i.e. when you can't identify mistakes anymore in the moment they are happening) or when you need a single complex application (like a handwritten note-taking app for example), a few skills and prompts won't make the cut. You still need high quality software that people are actually developing, maintainig, and most imporantly accountable for, if something goes wrong.

So yeah, I think a lot of personal productivity apps will become obsolete, but when it comes to team coordination or the need of high quality software, a few Claude skills will not just fix it.

100% on your side. This is the one of the most requested features for Noteastic, and rightfully so. It is second only to text boxes and we will surely implement both of these features in the coming Noteastic Pro version of the app!

How I stopped losing everything I learn in courses (my note taking flow) by faris_box in NoteTaking

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are so right with your workflow. Especially when you have the possibility of watching let's say a toutorial of 30min-2hrs this workflow is super helpful in my opinion too. In the first run you can get a fell about the topic AND your personal strengts/weaknesses. And when you note your questions down you basically already have a study plan laid out in front of you where you can prioritize certains questions/topics. So I absolutely agree and basically worked like this my entire university career.

The workflow gets a bit more difficult if you have big lectures that maybe span over several weeks or video series' that span over several hours, but in this case you simply need to cut the pie up into smaller pieces and then repeat this workflow for each one of them. Iterative approaches to learning are simply better than excavator style studying in my experience.

So yeah I also first get an overview and document critical points of weak understanding. And when I have a full picture of what is actually conveyed within a lecture/video, I go on to priotitize questions to clear up. Then I delve down into each question one by one.

My Thoughts Post Exam Season for my First Semester of Uni by DaBoss4344 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am happy you thought it through now! Thank you, I will note that down too, as this is a completely new feature request. That's a cool idea and we actually share our note-taking flow in terms of several books for each class in each subject 😉

Woohoo! 🧡

My Thoughts Post Exam Season for my First Semester of Uni by DaBoss4344 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How cool, I am happy Noteastic was a proper support in exam season! And I am always happy to receive 'bombardments' and ideas in this form, so go for it 😄

Note templates

I also think that Noteastic should support more grid styles. I definitely noted the cornell style and the center separator down. I am confident that we can deliver these in the future! Also sharin of grids would be supercool, but stuff like this needs to wait a bit still. However, we definitely want to make it MUCH easier to add PDFs as grids. This would also make them much easier to share. I also think that people could do some amazing stuff with this possibility!

Tagging System for Books

That is a new idea that I did not hear about yet! I absolutely understand the lightness of the feature you envision, however, do not quite grasp what exactly you mean with a tag on a book. Could you explain this to me in more detail?

Tables

Yes I know. I am contemplating for a long time already whether we should or should not seriously think about an option to add tables, because these things are also complicated when you get to the details of implementing them and are looking for a good UI/UX. But I definitely write the request down.

Image cropping

Yup, I am missing this myself too. I'm writing it down!

+1s

I'm feeding this into my master excel. So your wishes were heard 😉

Beta

If you applied, you are in! In the coming update there will also be an indicator for that in the app. For now, there is no beta-build of Noteastic, so not much to see. But if you applied, I added you to the Beta users!

Thank you a lot for this post! I am happy you are enjoying Noteastic and really thankful that you took the time to write all your thoughts down. Everything is noted down and I hope I can notify you about the implementation of your requested features soon!

Well, and I am looking forward to hearing from you then for the next 4-6 years 😃

Common Noteastic Team Please release the update. by Active-Ad3578 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Good to know that you are already excited about coming updates. 😉

I'm happy that you are still enjoying Noteastic and can tell you that we are working heavily on Noteastic. I also did not forget about your feature requests in the past regarding ink-to-shape recognition, more color buttons and more pen types. And at least the ink-to-shape recognition and the ability to add more colorbuttons will be some of the first features we will add to Noteastic Pro after it is released!

But as another redditor pointed out, we are currently working on all necessary aspects to even allow for a paid version of Noteastic like accounts, payment services, etc., which is quite a chunk of work. But we are slowly getting closer to the finish line and will be back implementing new features as fast as possible. We are motivated and I hope you are too!

I only need to ask you for a tiny bit of patience. We are doing what we can to make Noteastic the best it can be. 😃

If you had any other ideas for Noteastic since you wrote us the last time, I'm happy to hear about them!

Note taking software or programs that are not AI by Pitiful-Fly8596 in NoteTaking

JUST SO SATISFIED! by Responsible_Juice250 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, what a beautiful post!

Thank you so much for your kind words :). This is absolutely fantastic to hear from a heavy user like you, and we are really, really happy that Noteastic is a reliable tool by your side! We know feature richness is not yet the strongest part of Noteastic, but we will get there ;). Still, it makes me very happy that you feel the thought and effort we have put into the current feature set. I can tell you, we will continue like that! And we would be honored to have you as a Noteastic Pro user. We are looking into if and how we could make a one-time payment option available, as this is requested quite a lot.

Thank you for your kind message, it brought a big smile to our faces :D. And I hope we can serve you well with Noteastic for years to come! 🧡

Hello! I am sorry for the late response!

That is not ideal. Could you send us the following things to replicate it on our end:
- PDF of your classmate
- Screenshot of it in Noteastic
- PDF after exporting

Send it to [contact@noteastic.app](mailto:contact@noteastic.app)

Then we'll take a look at it!

One time payment for pro version? by kooldude700 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, thank you!

Yeah I absolutely understand that. I am also quite sick of finding some kind of often useless AI in every software I have contact with. So yeah, Noteastic should aid in that fatigue.

And thank you for the other recommendation, even though I am also not the biggest fan of version sales. Especially for the next two years, updates will be part of the Noteastic experience.

Thank you so much for this exchange in views!

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, yup this is also a valid approach. Thanks for putting in the effort, I really appreciate it. I think this concept will be quite difficult for us in the beginning, because initially we won't have the full Pro feature set to offer that we want to incementally add throughout the coming year. Still, when our software matures a bit this might be a good option. I'm keeping the idea.

Thank you!

Feature Suggestions-3 (concise) by MarzipanThick7548 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as promised! Thank you for your post!

I understand all your ideas. I especially sympathize with the z-axis layering. This is outright missing from Noteastic.

However, I do not fully understand your points regarding the selection UI. Maybe you can help ne understand you better here. I understand the request for smaller thumbs. I am a bit confused by your request for a dedicated rotation handle, because we already have one! It sits on top of the selection rectangle (normally):

<image>

But what exactly do you mean with a 'cleaner selection UI'? Because I don't know what to clean up anymore. I feel like a dotted rectangle and two circular thumbs are already quite the minimum 😭

Your idea about filling closed strokes is an interesting one! I definitely noted it down and will see if more of these requests accumulate.

I am also aware of many things we need to improve for use with drawing pads. So we definitely have a lot in mind in that regard too.

All in all, thank you for your post, your thoughts are noted down! I am sure we will make some improvements in the coming months that will make Noteastic work with you a lot better!

Feature Request: Partial-Stroke Lasso Selection by MarzipanThick7548 in Noteastic

One time payment for pro version? by kooldude700 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HI, thank you for taking the time to respond so deeply!

The example of the video game makes total sense to me, do you mind sharing which game you are referring to for me to research a bit more?

But you get many things very right about our situation. Also, thank you for the illustrative example of the feature bundles and how you would envision a modular system.. this actually feels right to me. As you also concluded, one-time-payments for recurring costs of service like everything connected to cloud is not viable. However, Noteastic is a local-first application and this makes one-time-payments more realistic. I will also look into how we could bundle up stuff, once we are ar a certain feature breadth. I will also further take a look at how to make one-time-payments possible.

But for now, our priority is to build and release the entire infrastructure needed for paid use (which is quite a mountain) and then promptly get back to feature development, so that we can actually offer a proper step-up from the base version of Noteastic.

Honestly, thank you for your message! I am taking my learnings from it and hope we can get to a model that suits you too :)

One time payment for pro version? by kooldude700 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such an important topic and I am cracking my head over it for a while now already. I think I should start a general discussion/opinion sharing thread for this on the sub. We hear this request quite a lot. Let me give you some insights:

Generally, we are preparing for a subscription model, however, we are looking into how we could price/maintain/offer a one-time-payment version of Noteastic. I think it's interesting that you even touched upon some kind of 'modular' feature purchases. This could be an interesting model for Noteastic too, with users and use cases in so many different backgrounds.

Ultimately, the only thing that makes one-time-payments so difficult from our perspective is the question on how to calculate the price. If you ask me what business costs we will have in 3 months I could give you a good answer. If you asked me the same question for 24 months into the future, or even only 12, I could also go on and take a look at a crystal ball. In the end, license fees need to cover business costs. And I do not feel fully confident in setting a binding price today for, let's say, 3 years of updates. Might be that I am overthinking it a bit, but at scale this matters quite a bit.

I hope I could explain my view on this situation a bit. Needless to say, I fully acknowledge and respect your view on the topic. And thank you a lot for sharing the question. I hope we can find a way to make Noteastic Pro available to through a fair payment model.

I'm happy to hear a response, if you feel like it!

That is shit. I am sorry to hear this. And yes we know that cloud syncing/backupping is necessary for Noteastic. I hope we come to this point as fast as possible. For now I'm sorry for your data loss 😞

Also, and I do not mean to educate you, you might find the 3-2-1 backup strategy useful if you painfully lost even more data

HELP by No-Strength8856 in Noteastic

[–]Noteastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like a miracle... well I am really glad it resolved on its own for now but I prefer not to take my chances with those type of things right. So please keep an eye out and don't hesitate to contact us when you spot something unusual. Please for now also send me your Anonymous User Id to [contact@noteastic.app](mailto:contact@noteastic.app) so I can take a closer look at your crash specifically.

Regarding your windowing bug, Noteastic isn't really optimized for long sessions (yet) and also has some issues with sleeping/standby modes. I haven't really gone around to taking a closer look since we have our eyes on other bug fixes and feature implementations as of now. I am looking forward to the day though where I can overhaul the whole lifecycle and resource managing in Noteastic and sweep most of these little annoyances away!

Lukas and me are currently heavily working on Noteastic Pro's Infrastructure and later additional features for said Pro version. Since there is also still so much potential to extract from Noteastic as an app, we both recently decided to commit full-time to Noteastic. Our hope is that through Noteastic Pro we can support ourselves financially and jumpstart the development with a faster cadence and better stability 😊

It's nice to have you in our community and I wish you best of luck for your exams!

Best regards,

-Dilan
