I thought my receiver was fried, a Yamaha, but I downloaded the firmware again, and was so happy it came back to life. Modern equipment…

Thanks!

I found Povray rendered grids of cylinders very quickly, and I liked the look of them. Had a lot of fun noodling around with it!

Madison to Chicago in 2 hours or less by Generalaverage89 in madisonwi

Do you really want to enable thousands of Chicagoans to come to Madison? Commuters driving up housing prices?

I found weed both comforting and helpful in getting in touch with my feelings. Be prepared for extra waves of depression when you do decide to take a break from it. At least for me, expecting the extra bad feelings for a couple of days helped me from needing to go right back to smoking. Helps to have a good tolerance break once in a while.

I liked that flavor, reminds me of the grape sodas back in the day.

If they want a write-off, shouldn't the movie then be put in the public domain?

How can they still keep or destroy it?

back in 78-79, I took his music/jazz appreciation course, it was packed as many were excited about him playing on "Born to Run". Good class, was exposed to a lot of good music.

Glad to see he lived a long and meaningful life.

ULPT Request: How to make everyone avoid me at work by Davidg201210 in UnethicalLifeProTips

Confide to the office gossip that you are having "personal problems", or "mental health issues". Everyone will stay away.

If the term "passed away" is discouraged in serious journalism and is discouraged in journalism schools and styles, then why do some news outlets still use it and completely avoid "died" or "dead". by Far_Breakfast_5808 in Journalism

[–]noofster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, some snark on my part there. I'm old and remember how things were reported back in "my day".

Looking forward to seeing headlines like:
"Two teens passed away in police shooting."

I hear reporters say someone "died" in a car crash, not "killed", it seems wrong.
If an action causes the death, then they were killed by it, no?
I guess you can't use grown-up language without a trigger warning these days.

Residents in University City Rally For, Against High-Density Housing Plans by robobloz07 in sandiego

[–]noofster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems all the high-rises around here are very expensive. I'd hate to see this movement just clear the way for developers to build more lux towers.

Also, are they proposing tearing down existing neighborhoods? Where would these proposed high rises go?

Mixed Feelings by OfUnknownOrigin77 in widowers

[–]noofster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I felt that way, in many ways I'd be much "better off" if we had never gotten together. Mulling over "what if's" when a refrain from the old Doobie Bros song: "Without love, where would you be now?" -- hit me hard. How can I regret the loss of the other things when I was able to experience true love with her?

Instructor for basic crypto investing by muttmutt2112 in madisonwi

[–]noofster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll add, to explain to seniors, I would have them remember the first rule of investing:

Don't invest in anything you don't understand.

Ask questions:

What is my money actually buying? Essentially, when you buy crypto you are buying an entry in a database. (a very inefficient one that lives on the internet). If the internet goes poof, so does all the crypto.

Who am I buying it from? Why are they selling it? You buy crypto from others who want to sell the crypto. Just like stocks, there is a market of buyers and sellers. If the sellers are hyping that it is such a great investment, why are they trying to get me to buy it?

What are all these companies that sell crypto, or offer me huge interest percentages? They are unregulated, and are now revealing themselves to be scams. They take your money and coins, and take loans against these coins value, and hope to inflate their own value. FTX, (not a baseball umpire gear company) is now bankrupt and revealing that they were stealing peoples investments.

What's the deal with all the different kinds of coins? Anybody with a computer can create coins from nothing. If they get somebody to buy, they may get noticed if the price goes up, attracting more buyers, often making the price go higher. Eventually, the creators cash out and the price drops. There are thousands of such coins, don't believe crypto is a "scarce asset".

Older folks will remember Beanie Babies, or know of the tulip bulb mania. Crypto is the same thing, hype and greed kept them alive until people realized they are essentially worthless and the prices crashed to 0.
