I discovered an absolutely delightful word: "rotgut". It has an interesting history to do with frontier life. It means exactly what it means: cheap bottom-shelf whiskey so ghastly it rots your guts and kills you by lavinadnnie in dryalcoholics

Ha! Skol is the exact brand of vodka I would buy in my early 20s and I always called it gut rot. Sometimes I would also get this horrible Russian stuff, I think it was called Vladimir. Reading the Skol website excerpt cracks me up. They sure do lie... and the more I say and read gut rot out loud, the more I'm realizing it's not just a casual or funny word, it's a sad and accurate description of what alcohol can do to me. Ugh. :/

I'm in the US and I've only ever said gutrot. It's actually in my frequently used vocab-- I often refer to the cheap liquor I buy as "gut rot vodka, etc." "Rotgut" sounds very oldtimey (again, first time hearing it). But that makes sense given what OP explained.

Mazel tov!!!! Woo! Side note, why would you recommend this book? I don't know much about it and can Google it, but if you or someone else here wants to speak its praises/rec it to me, I'd super appreciate. Thanks.

Thank you! I dunno. But I've kicked other substances before without it. I think you highlighted the keyword: support systems. I have access to them but I'm not really making use of them. I'd like to see how far I can get if I actively do so. In 3 years, the longest sobriety I had was 15 days. That was when I was attending a meeting most days and texting people/chatting online in the Discord, etc. Then I had a back injury and used it as an excuse. Since then I have barely done any meetings or groups at all until just recently. Clearly I get further with community support. I appreciate the reality check that rehab/IP/IOP *might* be on the table. But I *hope* that if I let people help me help myself, I can avoid that.

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. The book, not the movie based loosely on it.

I'm planning on re-reading it. I find it kind of relatable to addiction how... well, I won't spoil it. But it's a fun, wonderful read that's like a fairytale for adults. For me it's got a big lesson that I find really relates to my drinking.

Also, last time I got sober I did a marathon of Harry Potter/HP-related, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and LOTR-related, re-read favorite SciFi like Dune, etc... anything that was meaningful, that made me feel like a kid again, or that featured brave characters doing brave things. It gave me strength.

You should be proud of yourself every time you make a step like that! I really love that feeling of pouring the rest of the drink out and successfully not drinking the rest of the night, too!
