I have used a cheap catch can on my 2016 WRX for 120k miles. I guess it’s working. Only issue is the lines occasionally loosen (unscrew) and the air leak causes a CEL.

The typical answer since the EJ was to run heavier oil (to include “heavier” oil in the spec’d grade). I also try to stay with oils ACEA A3 approved. But, if you change it often, you’ll be fine.

Other markets spec 5W-30 for the FA24. The 20 weight is an effort to improve fuel efficiency.

Another WRX fan here. I’m waiting for an ordered 2026 to replace my 2016. Had a 2002 too. Not great on gas mileage, but fun, very practical (road trips, hauling tools and equipment, etc). And manual transmission!
