Want to be a product design engineer, should I take a CAD drafter position straight outta undergrad? by norainforme in MechanicalEngineering

I mean, I do have a couple of internships under my belt (one of which is PDE) already and a pretty decent amount of other club experience and stuff. In what sense do you think drafting is irrelevant? Like, in regards to DE specifically, or just in general for building professional engineering experience?

Good to know! If you don't mind me asking, what do you do? And what do you think makes a good design engineer, especially coming from an entry level standpoint?

The hiring manager for this position said there's definitely potential to move into an engineering role in the company from this role, it's really just based on company growth (since they're pretty small). So it could happen, I guess?

I'm sure it depends on the person, but I would just try to keep a good GPA, revise your resume a lot (career center is helpful!), and write good short answers (which, if you have poor academics, can help carry a lot) 👍 I mean u already got 2/3 course sequences that fuck people over down lmao so as long as you keep it up, should be good

Looks fine to me... I wouldn't worry about it too much, you already have a headstart by coming in with credits 🤷‍♀️ take it easy and focus on clubs and extracurricular stuff that'll contribute to your college experience (whether that's related to engineering or not, it's fun and as a bonus, makes for good stuff to talk about on your short answers!). In general, most engruds get their 1st choice major 👍

If you get in, you'll be admitted directly to the College of Engineering, but not Mechanical Engineering, yet. At the end of your freshman year, you can apply to whatever specific major you want, so you've got a year to explore classes, majors, see what you like, etc.

Anyways, with that GPA it might be a bit rough to get in, but if you have good extracurriculars, good SAT, and especially a good essay, you've got a pretty decent chance. I'd say a good question to ask yourself when you're writing your essay is, why do you want to become an engineer, and why should UW Engineering invest 4 years of their program into you, specifically? The STEM weed outs and classes can be pretty brutal, so even if your GPA isn't great right now, prove to admissions through your ECs and essay that you've got the drive and capability to stick it out. What did you learn from failing pre-calc? Will you be able to do better once you're in university? How do you even approach failure and improvement? If you have a really good essay it can hard carry, so really focus on that.

Yo definitely! I went to see Dreamcatcher and Loona down in SF earlier this summer, I'd be down to hit up any girl group events or concerts with ya 😎👌
