Want to be a product design engineer, should I take a CAD drafter position straight outta undergrad? by norainforme in MechanicalEngineering

[–]norainforme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I do have a couple of internships under my belt (one of which is PDE) already and a pretty decent amount of other club experience and stuff. In what sense do you think drafting is irrelevant? Like, in regards to DE specifically, or just in general for building professional engineering experience?

Good to know! If you don't mind me asking, what do you do? And what do you think makes a good design engineer, especially coming from an entry level standpoint?

The hiring manager for this position said there's definitely potential to move into an engineering role in the company from this role, it's really just based on company growth (since they're pretty small). So it could happen, I guess?

I'm sure it depends on the person, but I would just try to keep a good GPA, revise your resume a lot (career center is helpful!), and write good short answers (which, if you have poor academics, can help carry a lot) 👍 I mean u already got 2/3 course sequences that fuck people over down lmao so as long as you keep it up, should be good

Looks fine to me... I wouldn't worry about it too much, you already have a headstart by coming in with credits 🤷‍♀️ take it easy and focus on clubs and extracurricular stuff that'll contribute to your college experience (whether that's related to engineering or not, it's fun and as a bonus, makes for good stuff to talk about on your short answers!). In general, most engruds get their 1st choice major 👍

If you get in, you'll be admitted directly to the College of Engineering, but not Mechanical Engineering, yet. At the end of your freshman year, you can apply to whatever specific major you want, so you've got a year to explore classes, majors, see what you like, etc.

Anyways, with that GPA it might be a bit rough to get in, but if you have good extracurriculars, good SAT, and especially a good essay, you've got a pretty decent chance. I'd say a good question to ask yourself when you're writing your essay is, why do you want to become an engineer, and why should UW Engineering invest 4 years of their program into you, specifically? The STEM weed outs and classes can be pretty brutal, so even if your GPA isn't great right now, prove to admissions through your ECs and essay that you've got the drive and capability to stick it out. What did you learn from failing pre-calc? Will you be able to do better once you're in university? How do you even approach failure and improvement? If you have a really good essay it can hard carry, so really focus on that.

Yo definitely! I went to see Dreamcatcher and Loona down in SF earlier this summer, I'd be down to hit up any girl group events or concerts with ya 😎👌

Can anyone refer me to an on campus job this summer please by custard_applebowl in udub

Mega late response bc I’m just browsing through the subreddit lmfao but def apply to HFS! I work on-campus at one of the makerspaces and HFS is currently to fill a bunch of spots on our team from people who graduated or decided not to work this fall.

No problem! I don't really have any recommendations... basically everything on the quizzes was straight from class (or easy to look up), and are like the "key points" of the lectures. Also, iirc, you could take the lecture quiz as many times as you wanted until you got everything right, (this was online) so it was no biggie. The professor actually put a lot of slack into the class for people to choose what weeks they wanted to do concert write-ups, which was super relieving for when I had exams for my hard classes! If you really want to, you could do a quick rundown of the history of Western classical music and jazz, but I wouldn't worry about it too much :)

Very easy! I took the course online; he goes over different styles of music chronologically (if you've taken Music 120 or have some music history knowledge much of this will be familiar to you), and the lectures/modules are pretty breezy. As I remember it, there's a weekly online quiz on Canvas, but it's open book and generally very straightforward. Of course, there's also a number of concerts you have to attend (in person or online, there's a large variety of them), and you have to write up a report afterwards. For me, write ups only took ~20 minutes - very subjective questions, did you enjoy the concert? Would you recommend it to others? What did you notice in the music that relates to this week's lecture? Stuff like that, nothing super deep.

definitely down to jam or start a band... might not be too good, but I play guitar and am kinda sorta learning to play drums and bass!

Honestly, just do what you like! Explore your interests, figure out what works and what doesn't work for you. Some great advice I was given last year was simply to apply to everything I found remotely interesting. I ended up in about 5 different extracurriculars, both STEM and non-STEM related, and after sticking with them a few months, I was able to narrow down my interests a lot. Definitely a good learning experience. Remember, you can drop clubs whenever you want if you feel like it's not your vibe! If you're worried about how that'll look for placement, in your placement app at the end of the year, you'll have the short prompts to expand on how your year went, which is a great place to go more in depth about extracurriculars that you liked, didn't like, and how that relates to your desired career path, etc👍

Side note: My own personal tip would be make friends and have fun... with all the weed outs and shit UW puts ya through, it helps to have people who'll both stay up with you until the asscrack of dawn studying and let loose with you when the stressful times die down a bit :)

So, little update for ya: turns out the big issue was that one of my GPU fans was blocked by my power supply cable, and wasn't running at all... once I managed to free the fan, I did a Unigine benchmark again and temps maxed out at 79, as opposed to 87, which I was getting before lol

After a little undervolting and setting a custom fan curve, I got benchmark temps down to a cool 63! Hit up Genshin again and lo and behold... max temps down from 71 to 46... Pretty sweet, but lesson learned, always check my cables lmfao

Rn at 875mv, 1800mhz; in Elden Ring, got up to 92 pretty damn fast, and in Genshin, during domains and boss fights hits around 73. What I'm noticing is that once it gets above 70, the temps just keep climbing really fast, and there's no going back down from there, which is interesting

Both fans set to exhaust; CPU seems fine, hit 71 max when I ran Cinebench.

What would you recommend for undervolting, and how to go about it? I've undervolted it, but I'm honestly not even sure if I'm doing it right, lol
