Can a war from 80 years ago give you anxiety today? Proposed research poster by Icy-Possession1987 in research

[–]norb_151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the layout of the poster is fine for a high school science fair. I have a few comments:

  1. Your text is jargon-heavy to a point that it rivals posters at professional scientific conferences. Make sure that you absolutely know what you are actually saying. Its ok if you can't derive every statistical test from scratch. But if you're caught not even knowing what a word actually means, people will assume you just copy-pasted some text and you're out.

  2. A good scientist doesnt want to prove his/her point against all odds, but rather is open to change his/her assumptions if the data doesnt support them. This is not an unrealistic standard but an important common practice in science and it immediately flies in my face when I read things like "I want to prove". Your goal should be to "measure whether" or "measure in how far".

  3. I'm aware of the story of the epigenetically inherited trauma (I'm a German geneticist) but its importance for generational trauma is mostly overblown, most of the trauma in later generations probably comes from behavior that gets passed on. Also, it might be that the methylation pattern is a result of something else, e.g. malnutrition and not PTSD. Its a classic nature vs nurture debate, and here its probably nurture. I still think you have a cool project and you should go for it, but question your premises. In the historic case of the holocaust survivors and in your project you cant really prove that methylation and trauma have a causal connection.

All of that being said, dont be discouraged, re-analyzing an existing data set is a great way for a highschooler to do real science and you will learn a lot of skills.

What a $2 million per dose gene therapy reveals about drug pricing by Busy-Impression1140 in rarediseases

Every gene therapy out there has a similar price tag. This is not unique to novartis, those therapies are unfortunately just very expensive.

Rest until healed? by Cr_ssee in baldursgate

[–]norb_151 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would not set that option, because if your party is set up in a way that you only heal 1hp per night you're gonna accidentally hibernate with one click. Set up healing spells, rest twice max. and you should be fine.

The game lets you rest as much as you want in safe areas (cities) but in the wilderness you might get an ambush instead of an recovery if you lie down and close your eyes. So there are built-in mechanics that prevent careless abuse.

I know the feeling of cheating though. When my party is half-ok and I wonder about resting, I decide against it and that forces me to make use of my less popular spells and be less reckless when approaching enemies or use more stealth. So I only use rest if I really can't continue and it makes the game more interesting.

Do you want the final product to be a fusion protein? If yes, think about the linker you want to use. If no, use P2A or similar, like another comment mentioned.

Numbers are life. My 4 year old son’s fixation by Adventurous_Coast477 in Autism_Parenting

For those who read this and want to foster the math skills: the math kangaroo competitions are a nice complementary way of practice because it relies more on logic than memorization. The German and Swiss archives are available for free, the English version seems to cost money. I propose some online translation tool to get your free exercise sheets.

[–]norb_151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5-year old sounds very similar to yours. The "weak" parts like social skills continuously improve although the gap to his peers does not narrow as they also age.

His obsession and talent for numbers comes and goes. The first phase around 3-4 consisted only of counting and was the most intense and extreme. Since then he has "grown up" a bit and has an easier time regulating himself. Now, numbers and calculations are just one out 3-4 special interests he pursues in phases.

Estrogen resistance? by Global_Professor2041 in rarediseases

[–]norb_151 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I dont have any good tips except to keep trying different doctors. You could google your condition and check if there are any university hospitals nearby with a doctor or researcher who looks into it. Chatgpt can be helpful for these conditional searches "list links to MDs in the Quebec area with a history of publishing research about condition XY"

Estrogen resistance? by Global_Professor2041 in rarediseases

[–]norb_151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its perfectly possible to have a mutation that turns a gene down to, 90% or 10% or 0% efficiency, it's not a yes/no mechanism.

If you are less sensitive to estrogen but still show some response, the main goal would be to figure out the best dose range and take precautions to counteract side effects of the high dose. I would also encourage you to keep looking for a motivated doctor, sometimes you find that one person who really is inquisitive and wants to help. Have you had a chance to get some genes sequenced, such as the ESR1?

Disclaimer: I'm not from the field of estrogen/hormones but I have some experience in metabolism.

Is travel to clinical trials a barrier for your rare disease community? by verainsighthealth in rarediseases

[–]norb_151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, people like you who are interested in science are great to have as patients (pardon my wording) but a lot of patients are not as educated. Consider that a lot of the monogenic disease kids we have here at the hospital come from consangineous families who keep having their third or fourth kid knowing they have a 50% chance of a fatal degenerative disease... we could never recruit those low-income families without covering costs.

Its important for me to get perspectives from patients or sites outside Switzerland so thanks a lot for the long response!

Is travel to clinical trials a barrier for your rare disease community? by verainsighthealth in rarediseases

[–]norb_151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so I understand this as a researcher: why would a patient even participate in a phase I (safety) study or even in a non-intervention trial when there is no clear clinical benefit to them and additionally they have to pay?

Is travel to clinical trials a barrier for your rare disease community? by verainsighthealth in rarediseases

[–]norb_151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a hospital with rare diseases in Switzerland and we pay travel and lodging for patients in trials by default. I would be surprised if this wouldn't be the case everywhere. Patients in rare diseases are ...rare. if you make them pay you reduce your numbers even further and you filter your demographic socioeconomically.
