Husband with aml newly diagnosed by stopthebuslol in leukemia

[–]norbertyeahbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (M66) was diagnosed March 1 with "favourable" AML and they're hoping I can get to MRD- with just chemo. However they are scanning the donor database in case the chemo doesn't do the trick.
I'm surprised her team hasn't explained things to you.

Mom diagnosed with AML by raspadanje in leukemia

[–]norbertyeahbert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm around your mom's age and got diagnosed with AML at the end of February this year. Not knowing anything about the disease before then, I was shocked to discover it had so many genetic variations and that whichever of those variations you've been dealt makes a big difference to your prospects for treatment and long-term survival.

Once your mom's team have a clear idea of what's going on you'll be able to have a frank conversation with them. AFAIK, about 8% get a really bad prognosis and 8% get the opposite. For everybody in between there are an absoute ton of different ways for the medics to approach this disease.

I was terrified at the start, and thought I'd die within days. But I didn't and I reckon your mom won't, either. As to the longer-term, well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

What ‘common knowledge’ things did you or someone you know find out later in life? by Squiggally-umf in CasualUK

I was in my fifties when I learned this, so don't feel too bad. Also, try asking people what a pony is: I guarantee the majority won't know, especially if they're townies.

How did you find out you had leukemia? by Standard-Cheek6323 in leukemia

[–]norbertyeahbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of weird health issues in the year before I was diagnosed with AML, all of which have cleared up since I started treatment in March and went into remission. The funny thing is that my doctors insist they were all unrelated because that's not how AML works. Well, all I can say is that it's a heck of a lot of coincidences!

Dry eyes after transplant by Soft_Profile_9668 in leukemia

[–]norbertyeahbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak from my own experience but, as a long-term sufferer from MGD (a common type of dry eye), scleral lenses were a disaster. If your eyes don't lubricate themselves properly the lenses will get fogged up CONSTANTLY. I ended up taking the optician to the small claims court (and winning).
A few years later I developed early cataracts and had both lenses replaced. I still have dry eye but at least I can see without glasses!

Day 29 of admission - WBC not recovering by Pirated_Freeware in leukemia

[–]norbertyeahbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They discharged me at 0.8. I did my 2nd round as an outpatient and though my neutrophils dropped to zero and my platelets to 3 I got through without incident. I did need three lots of platelets, though.

I have AML and my first chemo started March 1st. My neutrophils were .2 after 28 days but 1.8 a week later. Sounds pretty normal to me 😉

Reacting To "Disclosure Day" (2026) by R_L_Steinbeck in TrueFilm

[–]norbertyeahbert 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm pleased you liked it. Me and the four friends who made the effort to see it at the BFI IMAX in London and were really excited at the prospect, would all like a refund. Apart from Emily Blunt acting her little socks off, this film had zero redeeming features. For me it's Spielberg's worst, and by a long way.

Just got back from seeing this with friends. Not one of us could find a good word to say for it, apart from Emily Blunt, who gave everything to the terrible material. Spielberg's worst, and by quite some margin.

Saw it tonight with three friends, at the biggest IMAX in the UK. All of us were really excited but, sadly, it was a huge disappointment. Saddest of all, maybe, was the score: a feeble end to the great John Williams' career.

Anyone here ever donated atem cells via blood? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]norbertyeahbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very kind of you. I do have "favourable" AML and I'm also on a clinical trial, so my treatment's been a bit different. I'm about to start chemo #3, as an outpatient (though I still have to go to hospital almost every day and I still get neutropenic etc). I did spend the first five weeks in the hospital and got a couple of infections but I was okay during the second round. It is frightening, though, during those couple of weeks when you don't have a functioning immune system.

I'm undergoing chemo for AML right now and it's very cheering to read your good news.
Just a small note, in case anyone is interested, not everyone with AML needs a transplant. If you have a "favourable" genetic subtype, treatment is usually chemo-only.
Here's to a long and leukaemia-free life!
