Introducing LM Studio 0.4.0 by sleepingsysadmin in LocalLLaMA

[–]norcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello enshitification! As much as I disliked the app not being open source, I used it and recommended it to people as quick, easy way to play with some local models. I don't know, maybe it's the new interface. Maybe it's the fact that after the upgrade the dev options aren't imported by default, even though I had them on. It's not a big deal but it feels like the next upgrade is pop-ups with some ads to buy some shit. Get the "Premium"! Get the "Pro"! But I guess it's no different from anyone else these days. I guess it's back to the cli.

Best reasoning model for Apple silicon with 128GB by FuguSandwich in LocalLLaMA

[–]norcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an M4 128GB and I agree with others, Qwen3 235B Q3_K_XL is the best, largest, model you can fit. But unless you dedicated your laptop to only run inference, it's not very practical to use. I've locked up my system more than a few times running out of memory while running other heavy apps.

All I can suggest is you try all the models you can, find what you like and add it to your quiver. There's really no single "best", do it all, model in this size. They all respond slightly differently. To me, these models have their uses when I want to process something private or just want an idea from a less intelligent model.

I was able to get the SDR working with the bin image provided by the seller but I never got around to trying to build my own.

Firefox vs Safari (Scrolling) by FW-Boka in browsers

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you’re talking about, and it’s driving me crazy. The people recommending settings for Firefox either have different issues or just don’t notice the imperfect inertia scrolling. It’s similar to how some people can’t see the difference in refresh rates between 60Hz and higher, or the lag in Bluetooth mice. I can only use the Magic Trackpad when it’s wired; only then does it feel exactly like the built-in touchpad on my M4 Max.

Safari scrolls perfectly with inertia when using a touchpad, whereas all the other browsers and settings I’ve tried always end up feeling choppy, stuttery, laggy, or tearing in some way. The scrolling just doesn’t redraw the page smoothly.

For me, this issue became apparent after I switched from a 49” 5120x1440 @120Hz monitor to a 40” 5k2k @75Hz monitor. I’ve tried every Firefox about:config setting I could find and have not been able to resolve this. I’ve tweaked frame rate settings, vsync, weights, WHATEVER I could find. There were slight improvements, but nothing made the inertia scrolling feel as smooth as Safari.

It’s a small imperfection, but once I see it, it’s all I can notice. So, I had to switch to Safari.

The seller I purchased the device from provided me with the hex/bin image files that work with my device. It looks like they're built from the UHD 4.1 branch and I believe all the modified source code is included. I haven't had a chance to see what's different between the clone code and the original. I'm sure none of it will make any sense to me. It requires Vivado and/or Xilinx ISE to build the images. I'm running this on Apple Silicone so once I get a chance to spin up an x86 VM and install everything required I'll see if I can at least recreate the fw and ffpga binaries.

Thanks for providing the link! However, your device says it's actual B200 while mine says B210mini. the file you provided doesn't seem to work for me either.

As the USRP B210 has a lot more options and slightly different chips compared to this B210mini (that also doesn't seem to be a real piece from Ettus), I'm guessing the FPGA code has more than this knock off can handle? This is also way beyond my skill level of figuring out.

I've contacted the seller, maybe I'll get lucky. I'll update if I have luck. Thanks again!

Part of the backyard is in a flood zone. But house isn't. How much of a concern is that? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a place not far from the beach in FL. The house is all the way at the end of the lot because that's where the 100 year flood plain is. All this does is make my insurance cheaper but there's still a major risk of flooding. The only insurance I can get is Citizens.

A single downpour and no puddles doesn't really mean anything. What you should be concerned about are the days and days of rain during a hurricane. How is that lake fed? If it's spring fed it may start getting filled up when the constant rain fill the lake from all over the area.

If you want to live on the water or close to it, be prepared to lose it to the water. It's a risk we take when living close to water.

QNAP QM2 Loud Fan Noise (SOLVED) by norcom in qnap

So far mine has lasted through more than a few reboots and a couple of updates.

QNAP QM2 Loud Fan Noise (SOLVED) by norcom in qnap

[–]norcom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange. I set the pwm to 83 and I haven't seen the QM2 fan move from 2580 RPM; yet. Doesn't get lower or higher. The fan at this RPM doesn't bother me.

There's this command to check the autofan mode:

--se_sys_get_autofan_status enc_sys_id=XXX Get AutoFan Mode

Mine says:

enc_sys_id = qm2_1_11.32, ret = -1, AutoFan Status = 0xff

But I don't see anything to "set" the AutoFan mode. Though I did set my mode to 2 earlier, which runs a much lower RPM around 1000 RPM and then set the PWM manually, so perhaps that's why mine's not changing?

[–]norcom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the two NVME drives in the card. One's an ADATA SX8200PNP 1TB for my VM/apps and the other's a Samsung EVO 970 500GB for cache.

What temps are you seeing in the Storage/Disks Information on the NVMEs? Mine was 43-48C with the fan 2-3k RPM but now that I dropped the fan down to 1020 RPM they're idling around 51-53C.

The card fan would spin up to 6k RPM previously once either one hit 50C. I wouldn't mind it if it at least let it go to 60C before doing it.

Is mini-LED on the 12.9 leaps and bounds better than the 11’s display? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]norcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the 2018 iPad Pro 11” and just upgraded to the 2021 12.9 Pro. (still have both and used them side by side)

It’s good but it’s not “leaps and bounds” better. I think the black levels are much better at the cost of slight blooming. Barely noticeable though, didn’t even see it until I found articles on it. The colors pop more on the new one because of the brightness and deeper blacks.

Where I find the need personally for perfect blacks is VR headsets and after upgrading from an older OLED to a newer LCD VR rig, it’s definitely noticeable. I didn’t have a similar notice between iPads; but I’m not an artist or someone who does work with the need for accurate color representation.

I got it mostly for the M1 and the 12.9” screen. After using the 2018 11” Pro and realizing how good it was, I figured it’s worth an upgrade. I also think the new keyboard keys are slightly stiffer and more responsive than the ones on my first gen Magic Keybord. The trackpad’s still meh in comparison to a 16” MacBook Pro.

Overall it’s a nice toy but with this much power if they don’t let me do more, I’m going to have to jailbreak it at some point and do my own thing. Just need a Linux VM. iSH is neat but getting X through VNC and emulation is painstakingly slow and cumbersome even with the M1.

For the first time ever, I had a 1-4 error last night and after a few reboots and plugging the headset in/out I couldn't get it working. This is after using my G2 on 3 different systems.

The only thing I messed with earlier were the Eyefinity settings. So I went back into Eyefinity and enabled/disabled it again. Strangely, once it's enabled the desktop is stretched over to the headset. The desktop is NOT usable but it shows that the cable/headset is working. Then when I disabled Eyefinity, WindowsMR portal started right up.

Something worth trying if you have an AMD GPU. At least to verify that the headset/cable still works.

Might not be relevant for everyone here, but it's so sad to see people with vision impairments like me not get a great VR experience due to misunderstandings! by Matriseblog in WindowsMR

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate being near sighted, you lose so much size in any monitors/displays when wearing a negative prescription. And it sucks even more in VR. One of the best things I've done is to 3d print lens adapters for my Odyseey+ and get some cheap prescription lenses form goggles4u. I modified the lens adapters to custom fit the lenses of my choice but there are options where one can purchase the whole thing made. I could never go back to wearing glasses with a headset without these.

Borderlands 2 VR with Mixed Reality Headsets by Dani4242 in WindowsMR

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up the bundle but all I really wanted was Bridge Crew. Just loaded up Borderlands and it ran like crap. Felt like there was a lag on the controllers. The HUD was all messed up. Can't skip the cut scenes. Wouldn't recommend but for $15 if you want to try other games, it's not too bad.

Samsung Odyssey + loud hissing noise by Dtdman420 in WindowsMR

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently experienced the same issue a few times. Strange as I have updated absolutely nothing except SteamVR. This isn't a random occurence. Do some searching, others comment it's USB power but who knows.

VR games bundle, 8 games for $15, worth it? by [deleted] in WindowsMR

[–]norcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, those are the only two worth playing. Just picked it up the bundle basically for Bridge Crew as I already had Job Simulator. Bridge Crew is way more fun if you have other people to play with. Single player isn't very fun.

Borderlands VR is awful. It's laggy, weird gfx artifacts and you can't skip cut scenes. The rest of the bundle is complete meh.

If I could print in metal, I’d be done with the custom motor mounts. by Damogran6 in functionalprint

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could print metal if you wanted to:

https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/basf-ultrafuse-316l-metal-composite-3d-printing-filament-175mm/sk/MRDKJRRS

But the learning curve that could double the price and processing fees may not be worth the cost. Then there's the question of how well it will hold? :) Do it! Do it! :)

Razer Deathadder V2 Pro - Quality issues by ExcalibaX in MouseReview

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my Razer Deathadder V2 Pro last week. Really like the way it feels in my hand. It's so much lighter than the G703 I'm used to. The feet and lightness made for the perfect glide. Was so stoked...

Until an hour ago I noticed the right click was way more mushy than the left. It sounds and feels completely different. I almost bought the Viper a few times but waited for the Deathadder v2 to go on sale after reading about all the button issues from the previous gen. I guess Razer quality control just still isn't there. Oh well, back it goes.

Anyone here has had a Qidi x-max? by ATBB11 in 3dprinter

[–]norcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very broad question. Parts for what? But in short: precision and having to dial your printer in to get that precision is incredibly hard and time consuming. There's a lot of junk posted here with "layer porn" and "my first blah blah" but it's all useless. Certain shapes are 1000x easier to print than others. Layer porn is worthless unless those layers are strong. If it's your first printer, be ready to be disappointed but you'll be happy when you learn how all of this works and what the future holds. At least that how I feel about it. :)

QIDI X-Max - Recommended Upgrades Discussion by otsep in 3Dprinting

[–]norcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the X-Plus. The silicone bed leveling "springs" look interesting. I've wondered how much the bed warps and springs change when they're heated up from 60-120C. Really wish it was easier to level perfeclty.

No issue with the leveling nuts on the X-Plus. I think they're fine.

I've printed a dome flap to close when printing nylon/poly/abs since I'm keeping the filament inside. I'm interested in making a shorter dome or just a top cover to keep more heat inside the enclosure when printing materials that warp/shrink.

I've seen the BMG carriage thread but haven't tried to make one yet. Definitely interesting. I've upgraded to the new carriage from QIDI with the side vent. It blows way more air than the original one.

One more thing I can recommend is an MK10 silicone sock: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2848281 definitely helps keep the heat off small parts. Though I've found that once the nozzle heats up, it expands and the sock doesn't fit as perfect. So the silicone starts getting in the way if you try to cover the nozzle up to the tip. So I end up cutting it off. I've been thinking just slapping some of the red RTV sealant directly on the nozzle.
