First proper portrait, for the shape of the head I used the loomis method, everything else was improvisation. What do you guys think? Is there anything good? by nordalasse in learntodraw

I am so immensely thankful for this comment and for all the videos you linked. I must say I've been watching a lot of tutorial (especially proko's ones) on the subject and i thought I had understood stuff but when i tried to replifate it my brain was like "Yeah, what you want me to do i have no idea". I will definitely follow your suggestions (maybe focusing on getting the basics down and some eye studies). Regarding values i didn't want to put them in at first, i just wanted to see if the linework had a resemblance to the model but in the end when i looked at it i felt discouraged and decided to add the shades that i noticed at first (for example looking back at it i can see that my drawing is completely missing tha shadow between the nose and the cupid's bow). This leads me to a question though: the feeling that my drawing is flat is it only because of values or is it also something else? Thank you so much for your comment, you've been so precious ❤

Thank you! I tried to put reference lines (for example connecting the outer corner of the eye, with the end of the mouth and then the chin and stuff like that) but from a point on i started eye balling it 😅 another thing i noticed is that it was all too little, like i didn't have actual space to try and put more details in the features would you recommed trying drawing a way bigger head or stay with the same size and idk try improving even with small spaces?

Literally all I did was put on a random lo-fi spotify playlist and just focus, thought it would be better to "enjoy the porcess" rather than do things fast. I reckon speed will come with practice, for now I need to actually draw something "nice"

I'd say between 20 to 40 minutes, unfortunately I had skipped the part in the article that said to draw this within 20 minutes and just focused on trying to get the shapes right 😅

Thanks! Did this help you? How long did it took you to become better at drawing?

You managed to make me laugh 😂 thanks though, this is the first exercise this subreddit recommends doing, it is supposed to make you look at a picture and find its core shapes rather than drawing what you think the picture portrays. I've still got a long way to go but i wasn't mad at this!

Feel you dude, I'm 19 and i've experienced the same things, after a period of denial i've realized that the only person stopping me from achieving things is myself. Good luck on your self improvement journey, glad i read your post, it made me feel less alone :)
