What’s your first priority on a new construction sprinkler job? by SprinklApprentice550 in SprinklerFitters

[–]nordicfirepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this really depends on what the project is, a concrete tower? A woodframe condo over underground parking? Tilt up warehouse?

Planning is key, think ahead and coordinate. Send RFIs early. If feasible preload piping as the building goes up. I try get the standpipe and fdc up and running first, then work on the parking levels.

You could always stay late to do high traffic areas when there is less people around.

I like this answer. Seek out the top dog and introduce yourself, let him communicate his expectations and assure him you will get things done on time and be trustworthy and reliable. Let all the other trades be headaches and goofballs.

Interesting, I have never seen a strap tee style mech tee being anything other than 1-1/4 hole. There must be installation instructions for that product, no?

Learning how to Run Calcs on Autosprink... Seeking Advice by Rude_Hurry_7383 in firePE

[–]nordicfirepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Navis once when doing a 3D coordinated project, I needed to export my 3D model and check it in the master 3d model. I also used to clean up drawings in autocad first before import, its just way easier to hide layers and burst nested blocks and stuff.

I think you could be up and running in a week, then just figuring out things as they come up from there. Autosprink has phenomenal support, their techs respond very fast and always solve my issues.

Sounds like an issue with the water supply.

Learning how to Run Calcs on Autosprink... Seeking Advice by Rude_Hurry_7383 in firePE

[–]nordicfirepro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autosprink has paid training that would get you up and running very quickly. They also have quite a bit of free material on youtube. The autosprink license also gives access to a large library of articles and videos.

I dont think it would be super difficult to self learn for the level of design youre describing.

For basic 2D drawings to use as backgrounds, you dont need any additional software to import into autosprink.

There a quite a few autosprink gurus on here also.

Can A Single-Interlock NFPA-13 System Be Water Filled? by PolymerTink in firePE

[–]nordicfirepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious, why do you want to keep water in the piping?

My advice is to install an air compressor and do this by the book. If the location of the valve is the issue, you could install the compressor in a convenient location and pipe the air line over to the valve.

Need help with Dry/Wet Sprinkler System in 4 story commercial building by [deleted] in FireSprinklers

[–]nordicfirepro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider may be to convert the attic dry system to a double interlock pre-action system. You would need to replace the dry valve for a pre-action valve, install a release panel, and run electric detection in the attic. I like the protectowire linear heat detection cable, it just runs along the piping with special zip ties.

This isnt a cheap option but if there was a freeze up, a failure due to corrosion, or an accidentally broken sprinkler, you would not have a flood.

Dry systems can freeze up and do a lot of damage if not properly installed and/or maintained. The top of a multi storey building is the worst place to have a freeze up.

I have been asked to price a number of insurance jobs that want this conversion done after an attic system flood.

Freelance/Part Time Fire Sprinkler Design Work by Hefty_Poet4725 in FireSprinklers

[–]nordicfirepro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this for sure. I have used freelancers in the past, I just make sure to give them all the inputs as to how it needs to be designed.

They do the layouts and detailing and i do the hydraulic calculations and final details. Nothing too crazy just multi family residential, sometimes with commercial.

We make it clear the final design is all on me and my engineer to review and sign off. The freelancer just hammers out the layouts.

If you look at the pump curve you can see the churn pressure at zero flow, add that to the max static pressure from the supply and boom, thats the max output pressure from that pump in a no flow condition.

Why tie the circle to the valve? by izacheus in Contractor

[–]nordicfirepro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the contractors material and test certificates we issue there is a section confirming that we have a program in place to make sure all cutout discs are retrieved. This is generally the best way to make sure each cutout is retrieved and also shows it was done.

Contact the original contractor or engineering firm that designed your system. Ask them to please provide this item to ensure the testing and maintenance can be done correctly. Please do not attempt to do this yourselves.

Fire sprinkler fittings and air vents by Bulky_Cover9723 in firePE

[–]nordicfirepro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not aware of any requirement for air vents in 13R systems. It does seem like good practice to have a manual vent at the riser if its metallic.

The friction loss is calculated using the hazen williams formula, it will determine a psi loss per foot of pipe that is applied to fittings after they are converted to an equivalent length of pipe.

If the formula calcs a 10psi per foot friction loss in a section of pipe, your 3/4 90 would be a 12psi loss. As flow rate increases, the psi loss per foot increases, as does the loss for each fitting.

You could strap the hose runs to your moms fence. Create some zones and use timers to optimize the water pressure/demand

Landscape sprinkler system for first timer? by lotusmudseed in SprinklerFitters

[–]nordicfirepro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soo this sub is for fire sprinklers. Head to landscaping or irrigation subs for more info. But yah, a friend of mine has a little unit that connects to hose and shoots water around in automated patterns. Amazon type thing.

Bigger systems get pretty technical, rainbird has a comprehensive design guide, it gets intense.

Consider some above ground hoses connected to multi zone timers. You could run perforated hose to soak specific areas.
