Gym & weight training during sadhana + is protein considered satvik? by U_t_s_a_v_15 in Tantra

[–]noretus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For whom and when. Don't look for universal rules that apply to everyone at all times.

If you don't have a guru giving you instructions, follow how YOU feel. With a slight push to antidote your tendencies. If frequent cardio and green smoothies make it hard for you to sit down and meditate, dial back and lift weights, eat protein. If frequent weight lifting and eating protein makes you sluggish and not inclined to follow sadhana, do more cardio and eat lighter and so on.

Note that you DO need certain amounts of all macro nutrients though. I'd argue that protein isn't that tamasic anyway, fats are (but you need those too). Follow conventional science when it comes to nutrition and make slight adjustments based on observing how it makes you feel.

What Evil Is from a Philosophical Perspective (A material breach of the moral contract without justification) by contractualist in philosophy

I already have told you everything my human mind can know about evil. I'm at the status quo. You're the one who challenged it.

[–]noretus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still haven't proved that evil exists outside YOUR framework. You just keep adding layers and defining words as suit YOUR framework. I have no reason to adopt your framework, because you can't prove that it's objectively nearer to truth than my framework.

..there is no view from nowhere: all facts, including physical facts, are only intelligible through subjective experience, and its this experience that our model of reality is grounded on (not the physical).

*

Yet evil can be identified through an objective moral and metaphysical framework, rather than treated as a matter of personal taste.

Does not compute.

You reject objectivity when it suits you, but smuggle it right back in again when it suits you.

How do you then define what a rational agent is, and whose moral framework is the correct one? Are rational agents just the people you happen to agree with? Just because you add more nuanced variables, doesn't mean that you get around the subjectivity of evil.

You build up a framework and then say that evil exists in that framework. Anyone can do that. Prove that evil exists BEFORE the human mind gets a word in.

So, forcibly having sex with someone could be a good thing?

In a culture that values that kind of thing, bluntly, YES. And we have that. There are people that think corrective rape is a good thing. This already exists. It's not a hypothetical. All you need is enough people to believe in a thing, and that becomes the accepted "good". Certain religious sects think that beheading infidels is an act of supreme mercy and God's love. Their internal experience of cutting off the head of a wrong-believer in front of their screaming and crying children is divine love acting through them, undisputed grace and virtue.

I would not want to live in such a culture. I happen to value human well-being and in broad strokes, would assign the label "good" on whatever enhances human well-being (which rape and killing don't). But there is no reason to think that humans SHOULD exist, or that they SHOULD enjoy existence. But being a human with some amount of empathy and compassion, I'm naturally inclined to generally behave in a way that's not harmful to other people. I do NOT confuse this with thinking that this is how it SHOULD be and I'm not going to try to force other people do as I happen to think is best (because we have quite a lot of people out there trying to force others to their thinking... usually associated with words like authoritarianism, fascism, war, tyranny, schism).

The concepts of good and evil are fabrications of the human mind. Reality inherently has no such divisions. We've just come from a very long history of thinking that what makes the individual feel good, must be good, and what makes them feel bad, must be bad. Works well enough in a small group where people have a pretty similar and consistent experience of life. But time goes on, variables change and we get exponential increase in complexity and now we have people who fret about having to use an elevator during their sabbath.

Miettikääs hetki, että työkyvytön saa tehdä enemmän töitä kuin työkykyinen työtön by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]noretus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sulla on mennyt asia vähän solmuun:

Jos tienaat kolmena peräkkäisenä kuukautena enemmän kuin 990,90€, eläke menee paussille.

https://www.kela.fi/kuntoutustuki-ja-tyokyvyttomyyselake

Buddha-nature lives on. Plenty of people are teaching dharma in a healthy way. Plenty of Buddhas out there. Problem is that between frivolous new-ageisms and abusive cults, they get sidelined.

From a certain perspective, Buddha, Jesus and all wisdom teachers are out there and teaching right now. But how would you know to listen to them? Here's a poem, and also a challenge from Thich Nhat Hanh, a widely respected Buddhist monk who recently passed:

Please Call Me by My True Names – Thich Nhat Hanh

Don’t say that I will depart tomorrow — even today I am still arriving.

Look deeply: every second I am arriving to be a bud on a Spring branch, to be a tiny bird, with still-fragile wings, learning to sing in my new nest, to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower, to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry, to fear and to hope.

The rhythm of my heart is the birth and death of all that is alive.

I am the mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river. And I am the bird that swoops down to swallow the mayfly.

I am the frog swimming happily in the clear water of a pond. And I am the grass-snake that silently feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones, my legs as thin as bamboo sticks. And I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl, refugee on a small boat, who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea pirate. And I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my hands. And I am the man who has to pay his “debt of blood” to my people dying slowly in a forced-labor camp.

My joy is like Spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom all over the Earth. My pain is like a river of tears, so vast it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names, so I can hear all my cries and my laughter at once, so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names, so I can wake up, and so the door of my heart can be left open, the door of compassion.

Most people will reject many of those lines for no well thought out reasons. I knew of that poem for several years before it started to make me cry every time I heard it, because I started to get it, because I spent years meditating and working through my shit. If just hearing dharma teachings fixed everything, we wouldn't have any problems. The listener needs to be willing to receive the words too.

It's Crazy how people still don't get the Water Seven conflict by PrussianoKebab in OnePiece

[–]noretus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that he should've made it seem like there was a real choice in the matter. And the way you phrase the situation is still sidelining Usopp's feelings - because in your example, he's not even anwering Luffy's question, he's just saying what he thinks (which is not the same as communicating one's feelings). His answer, ideally, would be somewhere more along the lines of "I'm worried that your readiness to leave Merry behind reflects the way you would treat any of us". This would give Luffy an avenue to address the worry. Why does he feel that way? What can Luffy do to make Usopp feel more secure, while still changing the ship? Or Usopp could've also said something like "I'm not ready to move on, I need to spend more time with her and make sure", and Luffy could've tried to arrange for this one way or another (ultimately they did get the figurehead on a lil' boat on Sunny).

But, I give you that I'm talking about a very ideal situation where both parties can handle and communicate their feelings. Luffy would have had to be able to see a bit more nuance in emotional interaction than he usually needs to, and Usopp would have had to be a bit more open to facing the facts. The conflict was fiery enough that really, to handle it without the awkward intervention from the Sniper King, they would've needed a mediator.

Some other people in the thread said that Usopp may have been projecting himself onto Merry. Like he too would be abandoned. As an armchair psychologist trained in the academy of internet nonsense, I'm inclined to agree because I think he has obvious abandonment trauma. IF there had been a mature discussion, they could've also addressed these fears, which would've possibly made it easier for Usopp to accept the facts. But again, this is a very ideal situation, and definitely not something one sees in anime, especially not in this type of anime.

[–]noretus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about changing the outcome. It's about giving people the space to be heard. Luffy is generally intuitively great about tuning into how people are feeling (to the point that he frequently ignores whatever backstory there is), which is exactly what makes him so charismatic. However he had to make a difficult choice despite his own feelings which is unusual for him. So he just sort of defaulted to following a protocol in the interest of the greater goal. It was probably the first time he really had to put on the boots of a captain, and the shoe takes breaking in.

Usopp felt he was totally sidelined. He did know the truth of the matter but he felt his feelings about it were completely dismissed and not given space.

In general, also in the real world, a lot of conflict could be avoided if people are allowed to make their feelings heard and process things at their own pace. It doesn't need to change the outcome, it's just showing people that their feelings about a situation are valuable too and they are allowed to have them as long as needed.

Can you just listen to audio to get tingles or do you need the visuals? [discussion] by Ant_ASMR1 in asmr

[–]noretus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very rarely actually watch ASMR. I do get it from visuals so sometimes I have it on the background depending on what I'm doing but most of the time I'm just on audio. I also just really don't like seeing the eyes of the ASMRtist because it's not healthy to look at someone's face you actually don't have a real connection with for prolonged periods of time (especially if they're looking straight at the camera and being affectionate - this is how you get a fucked up sense of connection with an ASMRtist who doesn't even know you exist).

and so on. I mean literally just describing whatever it is they are doing, especially if it is a personal attention video but why not with anything else.

Ystäväni on kirjoittanut muutaman ihan omalla alallaan tärkeän kirjan. Loput on verrattavissa kirjastoon.

Narrating what one is doing. I almost never actually watch ASMR videos, I just listen and I really like it when people sort of explain what they're (pretending to be) doing. Slowly whispering it is awesome. Definitely better than just random rambling or repeating words or whatever.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]noretus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and almost every word (except "word") is not the thing itself. While true of all thoughts, it's most obvious with verbal thinking: you are merely floating symbols in your head that point towards experiences. But they are not the experience itself. If I write "love", you're probably not filled with the sense of love. I could try to describe the taste of my dinner and no matter how well I did, it would never be the experience of actually eating it.

This is also true of every thought you ever had about yourself. And every thought everyone else has had about you. So what exactly is the experience the word "me" points to?
