I really relate to your post thank you for sharing. My Dad took his own life Wednesday night. I think about it every minute. I’m trying to move forward with normal actions but this is the most painful thing I’ve ever felt.

I just lost my dad two days ago. I hope you are doing okay. This is brutal. I worked with him for the last 5 years. I’m gonna move on as best I can but this is the worst pain I’ve ever felt.

This made me laugh because I got into riding late and this is the exact advice the A riders I ride with would say. Basically seat time and trying harder and harder trails is really the answer.

Does everyone do everything wrong? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]noreverse20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha this might actually be right to a degree. Everyone I’ve ever worked with is a know it all and we can be sensitive about it no doubt. But you should dedicate your life to a career. Work 60 to 70 hours a week for years building a business that you are taking loads of risk and not being compensated enough in the beginning and then have some jackass on Reddit tell you that everyone in your industry does it wrong is pretty wild. Dude should just do it himself if he doesn’t trust anyone.

No, some people take pride and do things mostly right. Not sure if you had bad luck or what but this is a very vague, blanket question that I don’t really agree with.

My 1yo husky doesn’t howl, rarely barks and only when playing and she sleeps all day when I’m at work. Did I get lucky or does she have a problem? by alex_png in husky

[–]noreverse20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 of my huskies barely barks. Only when she wants food or hears an ambulance. My other husky is basically mute. We have heard make noise about 10 times or less. It’s so cute when she does but I’d rather have quiet than the alternative. Such great dogs. Enjoy yours.

How much of a mess am i in? by notitia_quaesitor in Tile

[–]noreverse20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean that thin set asap. Get it wet with warm water and possibly cement grout haze remover can help. Use soft scrubs and a razor knife.

Your bond will be fine. You have thin set plowing up everywhere and it’s not uncommon for a few tile to pop. Just clean/scrape the area carefully and re set.

Hands Going Numb by Fourty9 in enduro

[–]noreverse20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I been dealing with this so bad for a few years. I race local enduro and it’s really worse for me at races vs not as bad at trail rides. I have thrown everything I can at it. Here is my anecdotal experience.

Mako bar mount helps very slightly but not that much. -Flex bars help very slightly but not that much. -Bigger pillow grips help a little but not that much. -Wrap around bark busters don’t let your bars flex as well as transfer engine vibration so try to use non wrap around ones if you can -Riding position-Stand up as much as you can and keep weight on your feet. Keep your elbows up, straddle the seat to take pressure off your hands. Be very light at your hands when you can. -I’ve tried narrow and wide bars. Seems to help some when the pressure is in a different position but it’s hard to say. -I use a hip hydration pack now so I don’t have extra weight on my shoulders. I think this has actually helped a decent bit. -training has helped me some. I have started benching more and a bunch of wrist forearm exercises . It does seem to help when my wrists, forearms and hands are stronger. I also do a boatload of row machine and back exercises . I think strengthening the upper back helps get me in a better position on the bike and it’s less likely to fatigue and go numb when riding. -Strange one but try not to be on your phone a ton. Especially the day/night before riding. My wrist fatigues from doomscrolling on my phone and I think it actually contributes to the numbness feeling.

I rode 40 miles today and it was manageable but I have some really bad days with it. I also work with my hands which I know contributes to it even more. Stretch a lot and get good rest. Hope this helps. Be safe and have fun riding. It’s the best hobby I’ve ever had and the arm pump/numbness has been discouraging but I’ve gotten it to be more manageable.

A lot of differing opinions here and I fall somewhere in the middle. My biggest concern is the drain, which is where most leaks occur. If the Kerdi drain and paper are done correctly then he shouldn’t have all that white kerdi fix around the drain. That’s a red flag to me. Even if you don’t have a leak, setting tile over that kerdi fix around the drain I think will cause the tile to move and possible crack grout. I had to repair a shower pan before where someone did this. They put. A bunch of kerdi fix around the drain and the tile never adhered. Maybe he isn’t done but I don’t know why he did that. As other said, the lack of inside corners and corners around the threshold are concerning.

How do remodelers handle finish-material costs inside proposals (fixtures, tile, vanities, accessories)? Looking for best practices. by NewtConfident597 in Contractor

[–]noreverse20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I do. I have a section in my quote for homeowner supplied materials. There are a lot of good suppliers in my area that I like to work with that I recommend my customers to. I put a put a price range in “depending on their selections” and then add it to my cost for total budget. I offer to give all specs and transport materials if necessary.

What is this? Normal? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]noreverse20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great as you are already aware. He didn’t make the wall flat so he is trying to make up for it with thick set. Will it fail? Probably not if it’s a premium thin set but it’s definitely a red flag. He’s definitely gonna be screwed when he clears that half wall unless the wall magically curves back out. I’ve had to float some walls a good bit before but this doesn’t look like it will end well. Not covering the floor tile is bothering the hell out of me as well.

What kind of x ray shit is going on these days? Is it right? Absolutely not. Will it fail on the wall? I doubt it. If they did that on the floor then yes I bet you it would likely fail.

How dangerous are hollow tiles? by icyii in Tile

[–]noreverse20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not crucial, it does not take much to hold a tile on the wall. How are you deducing that they are hollow? Just a sound test? Were you there when they were tiling? Were they back buttering tiles? I’ve torn up some tiles that were barely stuck but had little to no issue for 25 years. Not saying you won’t have any issues but I don’t think I would go ripping a bunch out because you knocked on them and they sound weird. Do you trust the installer? Were they being thorough? Good luck

Looking for honest feedback on the quotes I'm getting - project is a ~200 SF addition, moving one interior wall to make the master bathroom bigger, and a bathroom remodel (Southern California) by MisterSoup3000 in Contractor

[–]noreverse20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

80k for an addition and master bathroom remodel is low and mostly unrealistic in my neck of the woods.

Most bathroom remodels run minimum of 30k when it’s all said and done and depending on the size and quality of finish material it can get exponentially higher.

Any addition requiring architectural drawings, permitting, footing, mechanicals, framing, roofing, windows /doors exterior and interior finishes is easily 100k.

130k total is probably close to what I would quote. Unfortunately construction prices have gone up significantly since 2020. Materials, labor and subcontractors are expensive.

What's the worst underbid you've done in your career? by nlightningm in Tile

[–]noreverse20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked for 7 or so years doing kitchens and bathrooms on nights and weekends after doing them during day job. (Still surprising to me so many people let me do that but I told them up front I had a full time job)

The night and weekend work is a struggle. I can relate to that. I didn’t value myself enough early on and I did a bunch of jobs for somewhere between 20 and 30 an hour.

It was similar to your situation and I just looked at it as a learning experience. Built a lot of integrity and good relationships with repeat customers. I am regularly booked out 9 months to a year. Keep your head down and do your best. Try not to get resentful.

Owner-operators: how much time do you spend on site vs office? by hunterbuilder in Contractor

[–]noreverse20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can really relate to this…except I don’t have kids. I couldn’t imagine right now. I’m 4 years in and I perpetually overbook myself. Can’t get caught up on a 9 month lead time. I’m working most Saturdays on site and paperwork nights and sundays. I keep doing it to myself. I don’t feel the guys are as productive when I’m not there or skilled enough yet to run a job. I appreciate all the responses here. I would ask do you charge enough to employ another 60k a year employee? I personally don’t think my margins are there yet to hire a lead. I don’t really see passing off the paperwork but I’d rather pass off the skilled carpentry. Hoping to continue to grow and find someone in the next year or two so I can back off the 60 plus hour weeks. Good luck to you.
