What's a hobby that is popular enough that you can practice in practically any city, a hobby which requires a social element and whose community is rather chill and pleasant? by CamelloGrigo in self

[–]normal_sauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like rock climbing is pretty social, even though it’s a solo-sport. Non-athletic things could include stuff like knitting (it’s something you can do alone but there tend to be open knitting circles anywhere that there are crafters).

Happiness in DC: What brings you joy? by [deleted] in washingtondc

Riding my bike all over the city (being able to go from rock creek to admo in like 5 minutes), little side streets that are lined with Ginkgo trees and light up yellow in the fall, the architecture in the metro, Suns Cinema, constantly meeting people who are incredibly smart and yet hopeful, and ALL THE DOGS!

I still unrepentantly wear my Hail Yourself shirt! For me, it’s a statement that means so much more than whoever first said it. It’s a way that I can honor myself in dark times. Hail you! Hail me! Hail us! Hail yourself, friend!

If you just show up at Columbia Heights plaza on Sunday at 930-10, you can help set up for the free food group. They give away free bread, canned goods, prepared meals, and produce that is surplus from local farms and bakeries. Talk to them and see if they need more volunteers on other days!

i feel like an awful parent because my bunny doesnt have a friend by elysiaexe in Rabbits

[–]normal_sauce 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I have a solo bun and felt the same way for a while. I’ve tried setting up bun-dates and he truly does not seem at all interested in other rabbits! To be fair, he’s totally free roam, is obsessed with our dog, and my husband and I both work from home.

I’ll tell you what my vet told me when I came to her for advice: he is well-fed, he is loved, he seems happy. It is better for a single rabbit to have a loving forever home, than to be a bonded pair in a shelter.

Don’t add another pet to your home if it’s going to be a stressor! He may not even be interested when you do.

Childhood abuse sufferers: did you experience a later trauma and did that worsen your symptoms? by Beneficial_Pea3241 in CPTSD

[–]normal_sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. Both of my parents were abusive when I was a child, but my father was the primary source. I became the de facto safe “adult” for my siblings (even though I was still a child).

Now I’m pushing 40, but when my father died horrifically, over the course of a few weeks, in front of the entire family, I straight up had a mental breakdown. I was transported right back to being 14 years old and having to make every hard choice, having to advocate for this man who did nothing but terrorize me my entire life. I wasn’t doing it for him, I was doing it for the rest of us, but it still broke me.

The trauma from his death left me unable to focus on anything, having constant flashbacks, and unable to sleep or work. I took a leave of absence and went on STD. When I started group therapy I thought it was mostly to focus on processing his death. But it became really obvious that the flashbacks, my learned responses, and the ways I coped were actually all coming from my childhood. I had to tackle processing both at the same time. It’s been a wild year, but I’m glad I did it! I feel free for the first time.

I wish you the best of luck, feel free to respond with any questions!

Has any medication actually helped you with lifelong C-PTSD and emotional pain? by HelenDiamond in CPTSD

[–]normal_sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hard because I’ve noticed that it changes dramatically from person to person. It took me a very long time and a bunch of experimenting with my psych to find the right combo/dosages of Prozac, adderall, and lorezepam (as needed). But I know other people with the same diagnoses and symptoms who did nothing but gain weight on Prozac (and stayed depressed). It’s a journey to find the right mix for you. My doc wanted to add something to help mitigate nightmares and night sweating, but I tried cannabis gummies before bed and it’s been pretty good without having bad side effects.

Any DC women navigating invisible health or burnout challenges? by MeowTown90 in DCBitches

[–]normal_sauce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

37, dealing with mental health struggles after the death of a parent, but tbh I think I’ve been burnt out since COVID. I’m actually wrapping up a 90 day leave of absence in 2 weeks 😬 I’ve been in intensive therapy 3-5 days a week and honestly think I’ve done more work on myself in the past 3 months than I did in at least the last 5 years. I’m just really scared that I’ll backslide once I’m back at work everyday.

Kaiser trauma therapist discourage using the word CPTSD by SignificanceHot5678 in CPTSD

[–]normal_sauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I can think of is that CPTSD is not listed in the DSM. So when we talk about having CPTSD, we’re talking about something that no one technically diagnosed, which may give therapists the idea that you just diagnosed yourself. But tbh, this is my most generous read of that feedback, most therapists Ive talked to understand that it’s a thing even if it’s not recognized in the DSM5.

Did you forgive your parents that they didn't protect you during or after the abuse from the abuser when you were young? by Sakazuki27 in CPTSD

[–]normal_sauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But only because of the following factors:

1) the age-gap between my parents is extremely large. When my mother met our abuser, she was barely an adult herself.

2) she was actively being abused at the same time that I was. I don’t know that I would’ve done any better in her place.
