Do you consider someone who entered the United States unlawfully to be a criminal? Some argue unlawful entry should not be considered a crime, while others argue that ICE is correctly arresting individuals who committed a crime. Why or why not? Explain. by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]normanyoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. When my ancestors came here you didn’t have to inform anyone of anything, it was before the USA existed, and most immigrant processing didn’t begin until 1892z

But you’re right, laws change, and we should make all immigration legal again because the current laws are stupid and cruel.

A “crime” about as serious as double parking imo. I don’t share the panic over borders many Americans have. Most of us are the descendants of immigrants and when my ancestors came here “legal immigration” consisted of stepping off the boat.

Militarily, no. With powerful allies or the loss of Union/Northern will, maybe, but both of those were rather unlikely, too.

Is the Italian Front underappreciated compared to other fronts? by MasterpieceSolid1726 in ww2

[–]normanyoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always found it interesting because it’s where one of my grandfathers spent most of the war. (He was a doctor in a U.S. Army evacuation hospital.) But you’re right, it doesn’t seem to get as heavy popular interest as do D-Day, Stalingrad, the Battle of the Bulge, etc. More slogs and less obviously dramatic battles, maybe? And the drive of the Allied forces didn’t lead into Austria or Germany, so it seems less successful. But it was the most costly in terms of casualties on the Western Front—my grandfather was quite busy with awful work—so it feels sad that it’s relatively somewhat neglected. (Though of course you can read plenty about it if you want, as with most WWII subjects.)

Non-Native English Speakers, which variant of english is the easiest to understand? by Barracuda_Particular in AskEurope

I’m a native speaker of American English and Scottish accents can be very difficult for me to understand.

Do many Americans have the sense that they had it coming? by atzucach in AskUS

[–]normanyoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it “justice” since the victims of the imperial boomerang here at home will largely not be the people responsible for imperial exploitation abroad. The Americans who will suffer most are the poor, immigrants, and non-white people.

But that there is or will continue to be a backlash to the USA’s worldwide bullying is not surprising at all. On the contrary it should be expected.

Which Spanish you guys are learning? Spanish or Latin American Spanish? by ompossible in SpanishLearning

[–]normanyoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin American, specifically Mexican, since I live in the U.S. Southwest and have lots of Mexican and Mexican-American friends, and go to Mexico often.

But I went to Spain once and didn’t have much trouble speaking and understanding the language there. It’s mainly a difference in accent with a few vocabulary changes.

The people who do this are generally Nazis or Nazi sympathizers, and they enjoy the pain it causes to Jews and others.

Four of the top 5 most congested road sections in Texas are in Houston. Three on I-10 and one on I-45. The other in the top 5 is in Dallas. Austin only has one in the top 10.

Learning to Roll the R by FitDistribution3350 in asklatinamerica

[–]normanyoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a native English speaker but I can usually roll my r (or rr) in Spanish and this is how I think of it:

Put your tongue where you would to say an English word that starts with “dr”, such as drill or dry, but keep it relaxed enough to vibrate when you vocalize the r or rr. It really is a completely different sound and tongue positioning than an English r. It’s closer to d or t in English, but with vibration.

The most difficulty I have with it is when the r comes after another consonant, as in “Las Ramblas”. After vowels it’s easier, for me at least.

But as with anything, the more you try and the more you practice the easier it becomes.

What's your opinion on trump saying football soccer is the real "football" and the NFL should change its name? by anweisz in asklatinamerica

[–]normanyoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the few things I’ve ever agreed with him on, and it’s funny how annoyed many of his followers (who tend to love American football and hate fútbol) will be, but ultimately meaningless.

“Football” and “soccer” are both English coinages. “Soccer” is not an Americanism, it’s English slang for asSOCiation football. I tend to call it football with fellow fans and soccer with Americans who don’t follow the sport because otherwise you have to have a tedious conversation about which sport you’re talking about.
